Horrified by Alabama Abortion law

I am horrified by the new ruling that makes abortion illegal in the state of Alabama with not even exceptions for rape or incest victims .

The only exception is if the mothers life is endangered . Am I right in thinking this new law puts women back 100 years with no ability to make decisions about their own bodies ?

What are your thoughts ?

Then I should hope you would be a darn sight more careful not to get pregnant in the first place notanan. And you can say what you like about modern contraception. Fact remains no one has to get pregnant. Excluding the rapes, under age sex by silly kids etc etc which will now be dragged out by the desperate)

"There is an interesting article in Time Magazine on the Alabama Abortion Ban which is worth reading. It is feared that the ban will be far reaching and discourage doctors from practicing in some of the Southern States which are already very short of doctors, particularly in obs and.."

It's entirely possible -- and reasonable-

Some years back one southern state suffered a shortage due to the rising cost of medical malpractice insurance premiums- Some physicians moved out of the state altogether while others went on strike until an agreement was reached -- during which time patients in need of surgery had to travel across state lines for procedures and treatments-

Then you’ve misunderstood my post.
I am in favour of termination up to 24 weeks in exceptional circumstances.
Abortion for social reasons should be respected to 14 weeks ( if not 12 )

So its not about the foetus then? Its about judging and punishing women.

A foetus of a 15 yr old rape victim who didnt know they were pregnant is no different at 23wks to the foetus of a 30 year old who initially supressed their doubts but finally realised they dont want it at 23 wks.

You are using abortion as a stick to beat women with if you are in favour of some abortions but not others.

rosecarmel Sat 18-May-19 15:26:53

Yes, it was I who placed emphasis on "I decline" -- in an effort to further emphasize that the law would hamper a woman from deciding either to partake or decline-

I wasn't driving home any fact about you specifically- smile

Except for the fact .. that you've the freedom to (decline) .. perhaps?

haha

"Late abortions" arent at full term you know. They happen up to around only half way through a pregnancy!

I would have an abortion for "social reasons" (not that Im likely to get pregnant at this stage)
My social reason would be money. I completed my family for financial reasons. If I had been better off I would have had more kids but Im stretched as it is so...

How on earth can a law enforcement officer refuse to enforce the law?

By just deciding not to prosecute, perhaps on the grounds of insufficient evidence?

Like the CPS often does in this country?

Lazigirl Sat 18-May-19 15:21:53

Do you have evidence of this Kandinsky?

Kandinsky Sat 18-May-19 15:14:58

It does become our business when late abortions take place simply because the baby is the wrong sex.
And yes, that happens here in the UK.

sunseeker Sat 18-May-19 15:10:51

Whatever reason a woman chooses to have an abortion it should be her choice and not concern anyone else. I very much doubt women make such a decision lightly.

Gonegirl Sat 18-May-19 15:10:07

Maybe "none of my business"*Maryeliza*. But I can state my views on here.

Gonegirl Sat 18-May-19 15:09:03

Social reasons would be deciding late on that you don't want the baby after all. (that's quite simple actually - and easy to understand)

Mycatisahacker Sat 18-May-19 15:04:41

What are social reasons???

I don’t think anyone late aborts because they fancy a holiday or a night out!

Honestly

maryeliza54 Sat 18-May-19 15:01:43

No GG it’s not too late. - it’s none of your business what other women decide.

Lazigirl Sat 18-May-19 14:58:13

There is an interesting article in Time Magazine on the Alabama Abortion Ban which is worth reading. It is feared that the ban will be far reaching and discourage doctors from practicing in some of the Southern States which are already very short of doctors, particularly in obs and gynae. Apparently Alabama has the highest rate of cervical cancer mortality in the country.

Gonegirl Sat 18-May-19 14:56:06

24 weeks is far too high when it is for social reasons only.

Ok?

GabriellaG54 Sat 18-May-19 14:50:36

declune decline

GabriellaG54 Sat 18-May-19 14:49:45

I did not put the emphasis on 'decline', you did.
I declune to delve deeper into issues which
1) Do not affect me and
2) Lead to some very aggressive comments.
I'm a pacifist.
I lead a peaceable and contented lifestyle.
What I can't change I don't worry about.

Mycatisahacker Sat 18-May-19 14:35:43

good for the DA

SirChenjin Sat 18-May-19 14:22:08

Great news from the District Attorney’s office and hopefully that will be extended to include the Drs who carry out the abortions. Horrific that it’s come to this though.

Whitewavemark2 Sat 18-May-19 14:21:47

How on earth can a law enforcement officer refuse to enforce the law?

SirChenjin Sat 18-May-19 14:20:25

Thanks for clarifying what you actually meant by ‘24 weeks for any reason is way too high’. That reads that the 24 week limit is too high irrespective of the reason but I appreciate you didn’t mean it to come across that way.

GracesGranMK3 Sat 18-May-19 14:10:30

News media on line is reporting that Distract Attorneys in Atlanta have said they will refuse to prosecute women accused of having abortions

Good news Iam but what a strange and disparate world we live in.

Starlady Sat 18-May-19 13:52:23

Rosecarmel, I'm astounded by this information about Alabama's governor! I don't know her, of course, but it sounds as if she would have no empathy for some poor girl who got pregnant by accident - or by rape - and can't imagine how she's going to raise a child.

Mycat, your unicorn post is perfect!

Kandinsky, what is "abortion for social reasons?"

sunseeker Sat 18-May-19 13:48:00

Iam64 I thought it was the doctors carrying out the abortions that faced prosecution - not the women. I hope the District Attorneys also refuse to prosecute the doctors.

Iam64 Sat 18-May-19 13:45:02

rosecarmel, that list of political decisions is chilling. Fascism anyone?
