Builders and Destroyers

Market Deeping Model Railway Club lost years of work in the raid in Stamford, Lincolnshire, on Saturday. Four youths were arrested on suspicion of burglary and criminal damage and have been released on police bail.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-lincolnshire-48332649

On Radio 4 one member of this club said that 25 years worth of painstaking building of the model railway had been destroyed. How dreadful that vandals can do this.

It is so much easier to destroy than it is to build.

For more than forty years we, in the UK, have contributed to the building of the European Union, the greatest force for peace and unity and the world's biggest trading block. Now thoughtless ill-informed people are trying to destroy that.

The sad destruction of this model railway seems to me to be a metaphor for the even greater destruction we are threatened with by the brexit vandals.

Oops! Alima has already mentioned that. Sorry.

Gonegirl Tue 21-May-19 14:40:09

this is nice Rod Stewart

maryeliza54 Tue 21-May-19 12:21:23

No ab the OP used it as a metaphor.

Mycatisahacker Tue 21-May-19 12:20:36

Well I guess brexiteers would say they see the EU as a growing self serving, corrupt monstrosity that is strangling many European countries identities for a political ideology millions of Europeans don’t want any more.

Anniebach Tue 21-May-19 12:17:51

And the mentality of seeing this vandalism as an example of
millions of voters decisions?

varian Tue 21-May-19 12:08:26

No, I think it should be obvious that I am not blaming this incident on brexit, accusing the vandals of being brexit supporters or anything of the sort.

I am merely pointing out that there is a perverse mentality which sees something others have painstakingly built and destroys it, not to replace it with anything, but to replace it with nothing.

There is a strong parallel to the mentality of those who shout "just leave" with no idea of how they might ever replace all that has been carefully been built over many years by the nations of the EU working together for the common good. These people have no plan, no better options, and for the most part nothing beyond a wish to destroy our precious relationships and replace them with nothing. It is wanton destruction that they crave, just like the thoughtless vandals who wrecked the work of others in this shocking incident.

These were yobs, hell bent on destroying something they knew had taken many years to construct and gave pleasure to many. As Alima points out, these unpleasant characters, possibly not very well educated, are unlikely to have any understanding of politics. Varian are you now blaming every problem big or small, every crime committed, every misdemeanour on Brexit? Your very, very many posts on the subject, introducing it in so many ways does now come across as obsessive.

Urmstongran Tue 21-May-19 10:41:25

Oh varian you shoehorn Brexit into this?
??

Mycatisahacker Tue 21-May-19 10:01:28

Aw good on Rod that’s kind.

Oh Alima brexobsession! It’s crazy isn’t it

Alima Tue 21-May-19 06:41:09

I cannot believe that some on here are tying what happened in Market Deeping to Brexit. Talk about obsessive. The destruction was done by louts, pure and simple. Ba..ards who very likely have no idea about the current situation politically as they are thick as sh.t.
On a more uplifting note has anyone noticed that model railway enthusiast Rod Stewart has donated a substantial sum to help with rebuilding the models. Good on yer Rod!

Mycatisahacker Mon 20-May-19 22:02:03

kapitan

grin

Kapitan Mon 20-May-19 22:01:03

Remainers. Why not buy yourself a five guys banana and salted caramel milkshake, pour it slowly over your head, and feel that you too have made a statement about Brexit.

Mycatisahacker Mon 20-May-19 21:33:00

Framilode

Oh stop that’s making me tear up! Such cruelty

Mycatisahacker Mon 20-May-19 21:31:19

Or you be Farrage and I will be Soubery or of course my old Fox vince cable and Anne widdecombe. grin

Mycatisahacker Mon 20-May-19 21:29:50

I firmly think some are so obsessed with Brexit they see it everywhere and in every situation.

‘Darling do you fancy a bit of naughty tomight’

‘Ok you be junker and I will be may’

Eye bleach that image grin]

lemongrove Mon 20-May-19 21:28:29

Varian .....I had to laugh, as only you could link that bit of news with Brexit.?

Mycatisahacker Mon 20-May-19 21:25:26

MOonica

Agree with you totally. Nasty nasty little bastards.

Anniebach Mon 20-May-19 21:17:03

But need it be on so many threads varian , the vandalism carried out on this railway is worthy of a discussion of why anyone would want to do it

varian Mon 20-May-19 20:50:45

Possibly true, but I have been politically engaged for most of my life and it is the most important political issue we have ever been faced with.

Anniebach Mon 20-May-19 20:49:58

Little bit ?

Gonegirl Mon 20-May-19 20:47:15

varian you could be getting just a little bit obsessed over Brexit.

varian Mon 20-May-19 20:15:10

The point is that vandals wontonly destroyed twenty-five years worth of constructive work .

Whether the model railway enthusiasts were leavers or remainers (I imagine it is likely they were a mixture) is not the point. The point is how much easier it is to destroy something than it is to build something.

What we in the UK have helped to build over more than forty years as an important and influential member of the EU is very valuable, but there are political vandals intent on destroying it.

It is an apt and timely metaphor, which should make everyone think, but, sadly, many might chose not to do so.

Framilode Mon 20-May-19 20:11:50

My husband is a railway modeller, it is his main hobby. He is very good and his layout has appeared in several specialist magazines. I know the hours and the painstaking work he puts in building everything from scratch. I feel so sorry for these men. I'm sure, if they are anything like my husband's friends, many of them use this hobby as a diversion away from loneliness, bereavement and illness. How can people be so cruel?
