Meanwhile in Scotland.....

With the EU election results for Scotland very different from the results in England, I thought it was time to resurrect this thread.

I understand that 72% of voters chose Remain supporting parties. The SNP had approx 40% of the Scottish votes but under the current UK system that equates to only 4% of all votes cast across the UK.

How long can this disparity endure, when the wishes of people living in Scotland are always defeated by the 10x large electorate in England?

The entire population of Scotland is approximately 2 million less than that of London.
How will Scotland afford independance? What will they do without the money pumped in by the government?
Oil and gas are running out and most of the companies that do the extraction are foreign owned.
It is very unlikely that Scotland will meet the entry requirements of the EU, so there wouldn't be any grants/subsidies from them any more.
I live in theHighlands and don't know anyone who wants independance.
I don't want to live in a 3rd world country, but I think that that is what would happen if Scotland became independant.

There's a worrying lot of misunderstandings among people in England about the perceived benefits of living in Scotland. At the weekend I was told by one person that he and his wife planned to move to Scotland when they were older as nursing homes were free there!!

Jangran99 Thu 30-May-19 12:09:45

It'll need a lot more care homes for us displaced Grans and Grandadsgringrin

Jane10 Thu 30-May-19 12:03:20

Just imagine the exodus!

SirChenjin Thu 30-May-19 11:22:13

I suspect that BoT will become a boom town if Scotland ever becomes independent Grammaretto!

gillybob Thu 30-May-19 11:20:22

I love Berwick and the Borders Grammaretto smile

My DH and I had a very scary experience during an SNP march too Jangran we couldn't wait to get out.

Grammaretto Thu 30-May-19 11:14:40

they're looking at Berwick-on-Tweed SirChenjin smile

Jangran99 Thu 30-May-19 10:21:51

That is so sad Grammaretto, and very uncomfortable to hear. I was in George Square during the latest SNP march and was horrified at some of the rhetoric in a city that boasts of its friendliness. I was only able to cross to the station with the aid of a policeman. I say,as a proud Weegie, I was not proud that day!

SirChenjin Thu 30-May-19 10:17:23

That's a shame they feel like that Grammaretto - but remember, there are anti Scottish people in England as well. You get narrow minded bigots everywhere you go.

Grammaretto Thu 30-May-19 10:00:16

I've been reading this thread with a smile on my face. It's enthralling to hear you battle it out!
I hope our worst fears aren't realised.
I live and vote in Scotland. I'm a remainer but also green and a unionist. This makes me a bit of an oddity .
We can't always get what we want but have to compromise.
I am sad that my aged parents in law will move to England if Scotland votes for independence. They are really scared of the anti English brigade.

SirChenjin Thu 30-May-19 09:57:48

Until we stop these ridiculous Yes/No referendums based on a 50.01 majority without a clear, detailed understanding of what it is we're actually voting for we'll continue to have these divisions.

LarrythecatknowsitAll Thu 30-May-19 09:54:08

I am guessing the sore Scottish losers of the Indy ref are as annoying to the majority who voted to stay part of the UK as annoying as the remoaners are here.

What a pity people can’t seem to accept a democratic vote.

If Scotland had voted to leave I would say good for them go for it.

They didn’t so respect the majority vote as we should all except the majority vote to leave the EU

SirChenjin Thu 30-May-19 09:54:02

we vote for

SirChenjin Thu 30-May-19 09:53:46

Very true - it seems that it doesn't matter where the majority live in the UK, we never get the Govt that they vote for.

Granny23 Thu 30-May-19 09:49:29

And an even bigger percentage didn't vote for the Conservatives!!!

Jangran99 Thu 30-May-19 09:41:29

In the EU election about 40% of registered electors in Scotland bothered to vote. Of those, approx 38% voted SNP. This represents around 16% of the Scottish voters roll, so stop telling yourselves Wee Nicola has the backing of Scotland. You Nats are as delusional as she is!

Jane10 Thu 30-May-19 09:16:22

Just thought I'd mention that just over 84% of Scots didn't bother to vote for SNP in the latest EU election. Says a lot...

Jabberwok Thu 30-May-19 09:14:11

Of course they have, with the approval of the Commission who have used Ireland in the Brexit fiasco, and no doubt will drop them again when it suits, along with the approval of all the other MEP's, if they value their funding of course!!!!!!

Granny23 Thu 30-May-19 08:59:27

www.statista.com/statistics/974861/number-of-members-of-parliament-in-the-ep/

If the UK Brexits then their 73 seats will be distributed proportionately among all the other states. If the UK remains but Scotland becomes Independent, RUK would lose 6 of their 73 seats.

Worth noting that Ireland, with only 11 seats in the Parliament has had the support of the whole Parliament in attempts to solve the Irish Border dilemma.

crystaltipps Thu 30-May-19 08:10:13

Each member state has a veto.

Jabberwok Thu 30-May-19 08:01:51

Collaborate and agree?!!! You bet you do if you know what's good for you! Particularly a small sparsely populated country with 12 MEP's! and you want and need financial support!!

Jabberwok Thu 30-May-19 07:56:02

You would be again! You don't really think that the Spanish, French or Dutch etc are going to be out voted by a dozen Scottish MEP's?!!!!
If people are unhappy about where they live, then move, I don't think the UK has restrictions on where people can live!!!!

crystaltipps Thu 30-May-19 07:53:55

JohnD “I cannot understand how any one can be INDEPENDANT(sic) and remain in the E.U. where you have to do as they say.”
This is where the fallacy lies - you don’t do as the EU says on 96% of issues - health, education, housing etc etc - you collaborate and agree , take part i deciding about some issues which are EU wide, they don’t “tell you what to do on everything”. Just another eurosceptic myth.

crystaltipps Thu 30-May-19 07:47:28

I think people in England don’t realise that a large % of the British fishing industry is, in fact, Scottish.
