Maybe the Duke of Edinburgh should give him a lift from the airpport.

In 2016 I made a comment on GN that the person who would be delighted to see Europe destabilised is Putin and I was derided. Never heard such rubbish one poster said. Stop scaremongering said another.

However, to get back to the OP, we said this last time as well, the Queen has to tolerate this misogynistic, racist, sexist, bully and his brood. I hope they treat her with respect.

Sadly it didn't work that way.

Before the fraudulent referendum, the leaders of all UK parties except UKIP, and the leaders of every other EU nation, all our allies, like the President of the USA, and the Prime Ministers or Presidents of Canada, Australia, India, New Zealand, South Africa. China, Japan. and every other civilized nation, supported REMAIN except for Vladimir Putin, Donald Trump and the French Fascist Marine le Pen who were the only foriegn politicians on the Leave side.

If I had been considering that I might vote leave this knowledge would have made me think again and I would have realised I was in danger of backing the wrong side.

Was the average Leave voter aware of this or did they just not care that they were doing the bidding of Putin, who has never had this country's best interests at heart?

His advisors may have primed and prepared him to the enth degree, Day6, but Trump being Trump, he will either ignore any advice (because he thinks he knows best) or just "forget" how things should be done.

He showed his lack of knowledge of correct behaviour with HM on his last visit!

M0nica Sat 01-Jun-19 20:51:51

Frage and Johnson endrsed by Trump - well, that shouldbe the kiss of death.

Would he endorse Corbyn if we paid him?

While there is no question that the USA is a very powerful force in the world – financially, militarily and culturally – I don't think the President has ever been "the leader of the free world" and certainly the current President isn't. It's just one of those overblown populist phrases.

It is worth reminding people that Donald Trump, like George W. Bush, didn't win the popular vote; he was conclusively defeated by Hillary Clinton. He became President because of the archaic Electoral College system whereby votes in some states carry more weight than in others.

I have no doubt that the Royal Family will treat him with unfailing courtesy, but it must be galling for the Prince of Wales to remember his comments about "nailing" his late wife and I don't suppose Prince Harry is ecstatic about his "nasty" wife either.

Day6 Sat 01-Jun-19 19:11:56

The one place I hope Trump behaves himself impeccably is at the war remembrance ceremonies, which would be an inappropriate place for his tantrums and tweets.

Yes, I completely agree Caledonailand also hope fervently that those wanting to demonstrate against Trump steer well clear of that event. It would be completely disrespectful to all concerned.

His is a state visit. I hope his advisors have primed him on royal protocol. Prince Charles has to meet him for tea I believe. If there ever was a meeting of minds, this is not it! They are polar opposites. grin The royal family are professionals. No matter how odious they think Trump is, they won't let it show.

It still baffles me that such a strange man as Trump can be 'leader of the free world.' However, OH has three very bright ex colleagues, Americans, academics in Uni research, who believe Trump has done wonders for America and politics in general. shock

KatyK Sat 01-Jun-19 19:08:36

grin

phoenix Sat 01-Jun-19 18:57:08

KatyK then according to all laws of sensible behaviour, they should be locked up!

(Just waiting for someone to report this post!)

Luckygirl Sat 01-Jun-19 18:52:42

jura - if I had cousins like that I too would be severing ties. It feels utterly inexplicable. It is not just like a simple difference of political opinion; it is more like a whole different view of humanity. It is so disturbing.

KatyK Sat 01-Jun-19 18:47:45

Not as far as I'm aware Phoenix !

phoenix Sat 01-Jun-19 18:31:04

Are they being paid, on drugs or coerced in some way?

It would take much more than that to make me say a single word in favour of that odious man!

KatyK Sat 01-Jun-19 18:27:07

It's worrying that otherwise intelligent people can like him. Has anyone seen Diamond and Silk? Those two ladies adore him, campaign on his behalf and blog about his merits.

Iam64 Sat 01-Jun-19 18:11:25

That’s the thing Phoenix, you’re right, Hitler had a following. Some Trump supporters in the USA seem to share anti black/Hispanic/name any minority views. His comments about women are disgusting and it puzzles me that any WOman could support him.

phoenix Sat 01-Jun-19 18:00:13

KatyK I wish Trump was "fake news", we could wake up and find it was all a bad dream!

But seriously, there is actual footage of him saying some of that stuff (pussy grabbing etc), do they really think that is "fake"

Sorry to say, I'm finding it very hard to stomach that there are (apparently large numbers) people who like and support him!

But then, I suppose Hitler had a following................

KatyK Sat 01-Jun-19 17:49:25

If I ask these Trump lovers how they could think he's great and quote some of the awful things he's said, they reply 'fake news'. The world's gone mad.

Caledonai14 Sat 01-Jun-19 17:36:33

Very good point Dinahmo. I suppose I was thinking of Ruth Davidson, Scottish Conservative leader, who - less than a year ago - was describing Trump as a threat to Western democracy. I don't think she's a Boris fan either, but word is she's mellowing on that score.

However, I am confident Boris - like Trump - will manage to be his own on-camera undoing. Coming to a public appearance near you very soon......... the leadership choices of millions. Oh help.

SueDonim Sat 01-Jun-19 17:24:19

After Trump's latest comment about Meghan Markle, would it be wrong for me to hope that Prince Harry bops him one on the nose? Trump richly deserves it!

Dinahmo Sat 01-Jun-19 17:22:40

Caledonail - I think the actual Gogglebox panel would be much more interesting. Their reactions to some of the potential Tory candidates for PM were very funny.

JoyBloggs Sat 01-Jun-19 17:21:40

Phoenix well said, quite agree.

Caledonai14 Sat 01-Jun-19 17:20:15

There's an argument for letting Trump and his brood come and show themselves up for what they are. Remember The Donald walking in front of the Queen last time, forcing her to dodge round the back to catch up?

Then there's the opportunity for Mr Trump to tweet during and after the visit. Nobody has to protest about him - he'll generate hilarious bad publicity all by himself.

And what if he throws one of his public shouty strops like he did the other day? It'll be TV gold and a bit of a relief from Brexit and PM elections.

I, for one, would love to see him, Boris and Farage in a three-way podium press conference. I'd also like to see a Gogglebox-type reaction from some of our more respected female politicians.

The one place I hope Trump behaves himself impeccably is at the war remembrance ceremonies, which would be an inappropriate place for his tantrums and tweets.

Not holding my breath though.

Dinahmo Sat 01-Jun-19 17:10:52

Absolutely agree with Bluebelle and Luckygirl. I watched the funeral of Simon Perez because I wanted to see Obama. His eulogy was dignified and eloquent. I thought about it several times as the election for the next President drew near. Regardless of one's political leanings, IMO Trump hits rock bottom in the scale of presidential Presidents.

Did anybody see that dreadful photo of Trump with his arm around his daughter? It gave me the creeps.

janipat Sat 01-Jun-19 16:22:16

Luckygirl I totally agree about Michelle Obama's book. I have it on Audible and she narrates it herself, so lovely to hear her read her own words.
Can recommend Barack Obama's book "Dreams from my Father" which he reads himself too.

Ginny42 Sat 01-Jun-19 16:18:40

And he's bringing the whole blinkin' family. What's that about then? How inappropriate! Were they invited? I hope they publish the cost of security for this family city-break.

Yes Septimia it would be wonderful for him to be ignored, but that's not going to happen is it? In my book endorsement by Trump should mean BJ's bid is doomed to failure. According to the Daily E Farage has some 'quite serious concerns' about BJ becoming PM. Whilst according to the Torygraph Farage says he's been 'banned' from meeting Trump.

Luckygirl I'm not going to read your review of 'Becoming' just yet as I've only just started reading it!
