But you knew that you ironic Gonegirl!"

Alexa Sat 08-Jun-19 09:34:12

Gosh! Gonegirl, I thought for a moment there was something deeply symbolic here. Maybe there is.Let's see:

"patchily" "washed up" "a bit loose" "grown into it"

This is the right thread Gonegirl !

Gonegirl Sat 08-Jun-19 09:25:11

This is the wrong thread

Can I be arsed to copy and paste?

Gonegirl Sat 08-Jun-19 09:24:27

I've got a navy blue East skirt. It's washed up very patchily. Still wear it though. At least it fits. Was a bit loose when I bought it. I've grown into it.

GabriellaG54 Sat 08-Jun-19 09:17:45

I'd far rather have a blustering opinionated truth than a craven lie.

Callistemon Fri 07-Jun-19 12:54:46

Enjoy the holiday Rufus!

Callistemon Fri 07-Jun-19 12:52:27

rosecarmel smile that's OK.
I had a friend at college who had a dreadful stammer but, despite that, went on to become President of the SU.
I admired him very much.
We have an ex-politician and a well-known political broadcaster who both overcame stammers too.

Rufus2 Fri 07-Jun-19 12:44:00

I presume staunch republicans Down Under offer to man the essential services that day
Callistemon; You must be joking! grin
Monday may be H.M. the Queen's official birthday which we celebrate with a Public Holiday, but pragmatists man the essential services seeing as how hourly pay rates are doubled thanks to the Unions, and so all the nonsense about staunch repubs, royalists, monarchists etc is chucked out the window; they all welcome the chance to earn extra cash. grin
Btw; we'll certainly enjoy this long week-end with "wall to wall" sunshine forecast each day and 18C. Not bad for Winter! Now waiting to see who features in the Honours List (OZ Branch.) grin OoRoo

^I don't think that the difficulties that people with speech impediments face is a cause for humour, rosecarmel

Many public speakers worked hard to overcome a stammer, including George VI.^

Callistemon, I agree- There is no excuse for it and I apologize, I meant no harm by it- It was a shoddy comment-

I don't excuse the crummy stuff and off the cuff comments that Trumps makes, but at the same time I understand where he is coming from- As well as where he comes from: Queens, New York- Home of the Ramones, Rockaway Beach, working stiffs (like Archie Bunker..) and .. sarcasm ..

His flaws are glaring- Yet, he's used those very flaws to draw attention to the issues that many of us have been muttering about under our breath about a very, very long time-

The US has absorbed other country's over-production, for example- But that's not the way Trump would say it- He would be more like, “I don’t blame China- After all, who can blame a country for being able to take advantage of another country to the benefit of its citizens?”

And that above quote was considered a milder Trump approach by the media, by many ..

Alexa Thu 06-Jun-19 18:53:11

But blustering and opinionated wouldn't be good qualifiers for a senior statesman !

Whitewavemark2 Thu 06-Jun-19 18:48:24

Why doesn’t that surprise me?

GabriellaG54 Thu 06-Jun-19 18:31:35

I'm a Trumpette.
He's out there and as others have said, he makes no apologies for unpopular choices.
Blustering and opinionated he may be but we could do with someone like him to shake up our creaking, warring government.

Rufus enjoy the Queen's birthday - we don't get a public holiday here for her birthday.
I presume staunch republicans Down Under offer to man the essential services on that day wink

Whitewave, yes I agree, Trump seems to fumble for words at times, almost as though his brain is in a bit of a fog. He is of course, not a young man (not sure of his age) and many people start to suffer some cognitive loss at his age, although of course, many don’t and are entirely able to articulate clearly into their 90s. He also seems to need the reassurance of Melania at times, and reaches for her hand, but she’s not always forthcoming, I suspect she’s a very private person, and being First Lady was never in her game plan.
Like you Whitewave, I can’t in all reality call him evil, but that doesn’t mean I applaud everything he’s done. I think we just have to accept that he is the democratically chosen leader of the USA. Some British people complain about the system in the USA which actually gave Hilary Clinton (one of my sons included) a higher number of actual votes, but I take the view that it’s their system and nothing to do with me.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 06-Jun-19 17:32:42

rose you do know that we are a Constitutional Monarchy?

The Monarch has no political power. Her speeches will be entirely apolitical - unlike Trumps who are entirely political and entirely off the wall.

rosecarmel Thu 06-Jun-19 16:47:55

The King in the movie The King's Speech-

Whitewavemark2 Thu 06-Jun-19 16:11:18

Who in the King rose?

rosecarmel Thu 06-Jun-19 16:07:56

Seems "the King" had issues giving a speech, too ..

haha

smile

Whitewavemark2 Thu 06-Jun-19 16:06:50

mad I am sorry I didn’t explain that very well. I should have prefixed my sentence with “in a country who admires their servicemen, and who hold celebrations on their return*

I agree with your sentiment

rosecarmel Thu 06-Jun-19 16:04:18

It's good that is hard to recognise.

Yes, I've noticed- The compulsion to throw the baby out with the bath water is proof-

But not everyone has that compulsion- Some actually are determined to throw the baby out and save the water, filter it for future use-

Many of his efforts, although poorly executed, focus on issues that have festered-

Whitewavemark2 Thu 06-Jun-19 16:03:19

Trump isn’t evil, unless you class someone who supports white supremacy as evil. What I do think however is that he has some sort of cognitive impairment. If you listen to his speech when not reading from a script it seems to becoming more and more limited. No one would accuse him of being cerebral that is for sure, but he appears to stop too far short of that to be comfortable in a world leader.

maddyone Thu 06-Jun-19 15:59:47

Clinton was a draft dodger, it seems that many people managed to avoid the draft in the USA. I’m in no way saying that draft dodging is a good thing, just that lots of people managed one way or another, to dodge the draft.
Actually, it’s war that is the bad thing, something we are all thinking about today.

maddyone Thu 06-Jun-19 15:57:19

Hitler was evil, Kim Jong-un is evil, and a great many more leaders have been or are evil. I’m not sure I’d put Trump into the bracket as them.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 06-Jun-19 15:53:19

It always astounds me how Trump has got away with his draft dodging, and how he has totally disrespected a genuine war hero like McCain.
