I had missed the headlines when I switch on the radio this morning but there they were interviewing the man of the past again - Nigel Farage. To find out what had happened I had to go on-line.
I do think the BBC have been overwhelmed by the snake oil selling of Brexit. Yesterday I watched more of the anniversary of D Day and couldn't help but wonder why about a third of our country - those who actually voted to leave the EU - are so unpatriotic and backward looking.
Ah, yes, that is the other paper we read. We usually read papers from both sides of the spectrum. I was just too lazy to go and find the papers and check. It sounded more like an Observer story than the Mail.
GillT57 No, you exaggerate. I couldn't care less. I was simply repeating (albeit not verbatim) what the press were saying re the Democracy volunteers and what they saw with their own eyes and reported to police and council officials as reported in the Telegraph. There is also an in depth assessment of the events as they happened in the article shown in the attached photo if you want to Google it.
GracesGranMK3 I was repeating what had been printed in the media, which is 90% of the source GNers use. I am not in a courtroom now and do not have to adhere to the same constraints. Democracy volunteers (a totally impartial group as their name implies) were there and reported their observations to police and council officials. You may like to read the purported 'facts' in the article mentioned in attached photo. There was nothing venomous in my post. I don't really give a fig as long as we leave.
^But I think that Labour have been unconscionably careless in their approach to this byelection, considering what caused it.
I think you will know as well as I do M0nica, that if someone wants to cause trouble they will cause it whatever the LP or any other party do. When I have evidence that the LP, or any other party, have done something wrong then it will be worth looking at. Until then it is gossip as far as I am concerned.
Don't make such silly remarks as the "none so blind" one M0nica or I think you will find you are not taken seriously. I do not make decisions on gossip. In what way is this, as yet, any more than that? When you evidence this - as you think it is so important others believe it - I will listen and decide. Personally, I abhor gossip and think very little of those who spread it. It is vicious and often destroys the good and let's those who are guilty off the hook because people cease to believe those who constantly use it.
M0nica it is a fact that the police are now investigating suspected manipulation of the bi-election. I do not think that the police act on gossip. The police will investigate if there is sufficient suspicion.
Whatever the outcome it was extremely foolish for the LP to allow a convicted vote-rigger to play such a prominent role in what was, in any case, a controversial bi-election. It was especially foolish of Corbyn to allow this man to share a platform with him and the newly elected MP.
Callistemon, of course the police act if they come under media pressure whether it's on gossip or evidence-based. The really good thing is that they are acting. If something is wrong the law needs to deal with it.
Callistemon you need to understand Corbyn, he said he had never met an IRA member, when reminded he had shared a platform with an IRA member, Diane Abbott explained ‘Jeremy did sit with him but he didn’t speak to him’ ?
The best analysis of what happened is on the local paper www.peterboroughtoday.co.uk/news/politics/authorities-insist-no-evidence-of-electoral-fraud-in-the-peterborough-by-election-as-police-investigate-allegations-1-8959871 Democracy Volunteers witnessed photography but had no evidence about postal voting. The man convicted of vote rigging was not an invited guest but on the platform as a member of the public (which anyone can do). I don't like the Conservative council member's idea that only the disabled should get postal votes. I have one because I am at my son's child minding on a Thursday and I wouldn't get to the church hall in time to vote. There must be many people who work away from home or work shifts who need a postal vote.
Trisher the link you posted is old news the latest version of The Peterborough Telegraph are saying 5 electoral fraud allegations are being investigated.
But photography is restricted and photgraphing a ballot paper strictly prohibited at the polling station so I do wonder why no one reported the incidents to the presiding officer. There is a substantial fine for anyone revealing voting information.
I don't think this is "gossip" or pressure from the media. If there is sufficient doubt then an investigation is necessary, regardless of which party is involved. A free vote is the backbone of our democracy - it must be defended.
