Preparing for No Deal

Well it seems that this is firmly back on the table, which will thrill some and horrify others.

What does no deal mean though?

It means leaving on the 31 October and beginning at ground zero. We will immediately enter WTO rules in all our trading activities throughout the world which means we will have to comply with our WTO schedule listing the tariffs with which we must comply.
We have said that we wouldn’t charge tariffs on most goods coming from the EU, but I am unclear how we could apply that rule to just the EU as surely we must comply with the most favoured nation, which means we must apply the same standards to every country?
However, our businesses who export will have tariffs imposed on their products making them less competitive than other businesses who trade under various trade agreements. Many farmers are expected to go out of business and where possible other businesses will move to the EU. We are seeing this process already.
The EU will of course immediately set up checks at the border.

fire racker are you aware that, that information concerning medicine shortage and food shortage is direct from government cabinet papers? Are you saying that the government is operating on scaremongering?

It is time leavers owned this situation and faced up to what they have voted for. Denial is a pretty useless course when the truth is staring you in the face.

The EU are preparing for no deal by advising businesses to get out of the U.K. we aren’t preparing for it in any effective way.

GillT57 Thu 13-Jun-19 10:42:51

firecracker I am concerned for the future employment prospects of my adult children, of my extended family and of others who did not vote for this. We are not all selfish retirees you know. Oh by the way as someone who is enthusiastically embracing this catastrophe, did you see the small print on the ballot paper? The clause about losing jobs? Andrea Leadsom has assured us that everyone knew what they were voting for. Do I assume that you are happy for thousands to lose their jobs ? Why?

crystaltipps Thu 13-Jun-19 10:45:37

Don’t bother asking that question as you’ll get accused of scaremongering gill. Andrea Leadsom is as deluded as the rest of her ilk.

ah thanks for that answer GG54 - very comprehensive, eloquent, intelligent and a real, sensible, balanced argument. Feel so much better now sad

Urmstongran Thu 13-Jun-19 10:53:19

“Leavers must learn to own this as they voted for it. Whatever happens the blame will be at their door.”

I’m happy to own it!
And who says it’ll be about ‘blame’?

You can thank us soon enough just as likely!
?

GillT57 Thu 13-Jun-19 11:12:59

urmonstongran. I will never ever thank you for causing the division in this country, for making a decision without knowing what the implications would be, for allowing the right wing faction of the Tory party to think they have a mandate to push their punishing policies. And for then telling me to get over it.

JUst read MasieDs link. Very clear and informative - if any of you haven't read it it's a must-read! Thanks for posting.
It is obviously written from the POV of someone who is anti WTO. I'd be interested if any remainers could post a link to a similar article explaining the benefits of leaving under WTO terms.
I'd also like to know how services are affected under WTO, as I believe that services are, by far, our biggest export. Anyone know?

GG54 - 13 June - 08.53

There speaks a true Thatcherite. Where would be be without Florence Nightingale or the Suffragette movement for example. They didn't act just for their immediate family.

The President of the Royal Society explains why he signed the Revoke Article 50 petition:-

"The science community was overwhelmingly in favour of remaining in the EU. That position was adopted by analysing the available evidence. UK science has benefited hugely from being in the EU. Science has always been international because it depends on a rapid and thorough exchange of ideas and expertise. This exchange was enabled by freedom of movement. We have also benefited from sharing rules and regulations that allow NHS patients to access trials of cutting edge treatments and technology, which the UK is simply not big enough to deliver on its own. And UK science has also been a net financial beneficiary.

Amidst the political chaos, it is astonishing that the idea of a 'no-deal' Brexit is still touted as a viable alternative by some politicians. Parliament has voted against it, employers and unions have said it will cost jobs and be hugely disruptive, yet somehow the idea persists.

The uncertainty and disruption caused by a 'no-deal' Brexit would be disastrous for UK science."

WTO rules barely cover services, such as financial. There is nothing in the rules that would allow British banks to continue to trade across Europe. According to the FT (Jan 7 2019) nearly banks had moved nearly £800 billion in staff, operations and customer funds to Europe. Germany and France are waiting with open arms for these businesses.

jura2 Thu 13-Jun-19 11:50:12

Interesting Demographic statistics

90% of 18 year olds are for Remain

90% of 90 year olds are for Leave

The balance cut off point was 45, 3 years ago

it is now 51, so it has jumped 6 years in 3 years.

Young people will never forget nor forgive.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 13-Jun-19 11:50:34

I’ve just learnt something that I hadn’t appreciated.

Johnson and other no dealers are saying that we can no deal and keep back the money.

Well apparently this money was agreed by us as part of existing contacts entered into by us (which I knew) but what I hadn’t appreciated that if we say “not paying” all existing contracts will stop. So we will half built roads, bridges, flood defences etc etc.

Doesn’t get any more saner does it?

jura2 Thu 13-Jun-19 11:51:31

Asked a relative recently what all his grandchildren feel about Brexit. His reply was 'ah well, they are all for Remain- but of course, they never known anything else- so their opinion does not count'. Thanks Grandad sad

Urmstongran Thu 13-Jun-19 12:02:52

I have never told anyone to ‘get over’ anything Gill57

All I’m saying is let’s wait and see - and who knows - you may just be thankful in the fullness of time!
?

Whitewavemark2 Thu 13-Jun-19 12:04:53

ug and if we are not?

Gonegirl Thu 13-Jun-19 12:08:36

Not going to do much for our friendship with Europe if we don't pay the money. They will hate us.

Gonegirl Thu 13-Jun-19 12:09:42

All this should have been made clear to the general population before the referendum. It's all so daft.

Urmstongran Thu 13-Jun-19 12:13:35

I will come round and kiss your feet Whitewavemark2 and beg for your forgiveness.

Regarding withholding the £39 billion didn’t the Lords say we don’t legally have to pay it?

We will, I’m sure but Boris will ensure it’s tied to a better deal this time around.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 13-Jun-19 12:23:30

The half built infrastructure? If I was depending on flood defences I wouldn’t be happy

Elvive Thu 13-Jun-19 13:48:49

UG, I honestly could weep at the nastiness, division and smugness expressed by yourself and some others. Genuinely it is beyond me, this pervasive attitude of " I'm alright Jack" It's desperately sad and I don't think many on either " side" had any idea things would pan out like this.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 13-Jun-19 13:51:26

A tweet from Dr Rachel Clarke Oxford
As
@BorisJohnson
bigs up No Deal Brexit, never forget what the £1.9 billion already spent could buy:

?380k hip replacements
?41k nurses
?41k paramedics
?35k doctors
?200 CT scanners
?1000 MRI scanners
?6 entire NHS hospitals

What a grotesque waste of taxpayers' money.

Firecracker123 Thu 13-Jun-19 16:06:03

Well just imagine what £39 billion could pay for.
