A major UK manufacturing firm is expected to announce thousands of job losses as it moves jobs abroad because of Brexit.
A representative of Britain’s manufacturing trade body Make UK said one large firm would soon confirm a huge wave of redundancies.
Seamus Nevin, chief economist at Make UK, said it would spark “several thousand job losses,” but said a non-disclosure agreement prevented him revealing the name of the company or further details on its plans.
He made the claim as part of stark message to MPs on parliament’s Brexit committee, where he was giving evidence on the impact of a no-deal Brexit on Wednesday morning.
He warned many major firms no longer regarded the UK as a stable place to operate, and were increasingly tempted to move jobs elsewhere.

Nevin told MPs: “Hundreds of jobs have already been lost with businesses dowsizing or completely shutting down in the UK.
“I’m aware of several other examples of companies which will be doing the same in the future, including one that wil result in several thousands of job losses for one individual firm.
“If you create trade barriers between yourselves and your biggest market, you are going to encourage business to relocate.
“It is clear that creating these sorts of trade barriers craete an environment where businesses no lnoger feel the UK is a stable place to remain in business, and in a global economy they will look to move elsewhere.”

Nevin also warned there was already a “direct link” between politicians talking up no-deal Brexit and British firms losing customers and jobs.
He said there had been a “very significant number” of job losses already which he blamed directly on Brexit.
“Our members are quite blunt and very clear. They say a no-deal Brexit would be nothing short of an act of economic vandalism,” he said.
“It would undo 25 years of economic progress and consign a generation of highly skilled owrkers to the scrapheap.”

I don't call it commonsense. Why anyone thinks that we will get a good deal if/when we leave is beyond me. I watched an episode of Countryfile a while ago and the farmers interviewed hadn't realised that their pigs and pig products would not be able to be sold to the EU without a deal. So they were in a bit of a panic.it's fine to say ' oh but they want our.....' but we have to have deals to sell and buy from them. Then there is the whole issues of the border between NI and the Republic. There is so much that would / should have been thought about before the referendum. But Cameron and co. didn't have any back up plans . And yes, I did vote remain because it was obvious that we would be in a real mess otherwise and that's before any of the other reasons for remaining.

Make no mistake if "no deal" is the only option on the table at the end of October the House of Commons will vote against it.

The above would then leave only two options with the first being the prorogue of Parliament for Britain to leave the EU on that basis, which would bring Britain into an enormous constitutional crisis, which would also involve the monarch.

The second would mean revoking article 50, which would very likely place Britain in a position that it may never leave the European Union. That situation also would very likely provoke a huge crisis in the country that it would take possibly many years to recover from.

So, Day6 be careful what you are cheering after if you value peace and stability in Britain.

Day6 'who, where, what'?

and mostly for the few Trade Deals that may be on offer - at WHAT COST?

MaizieD Wed 12-Jun-19 19:44:14

^ go and google UK booming economy investment in UK booms and UK booming exports^

Well, I've done that, Day6, following your suggestion on another thread. Not a lot of signs of 'booming' in the results of my search.

I totally agree with the above Smileless

They are fence-sitting on Brexit issues to protect their lucrative careers. It is pathetic.

Labaik Wed 12-Jun-19 19:43:18

Yes; I'd like to know which countries as well...

Day6 Wed 12-Jun-19 19:42:16

And investing in the UK and promising us trade deals Jura. Or did you miss that bit?

Smileless2012 Wed 12-Jun-19 19:41:18

Well TBH I'm pleased that Corbyn's been defeated but I do agree varian that it is disgraceful for any to abstain on such an important issue.

If they aren't prepared to vote one way or the other they shouldn't be MP's.

'Other countries have more faith in us than a certain section of our own population.'

who, where ??? The whole world is shaking its head in disbelief and horror ...

jura2 Wed 12-Jun-19 19:38:53

and you call No Deal 'common sense' ...

varian Wed 12-Jun-19 19:37:00

The Labour MPs have behaved disgracefully. All LibDem MPs voted for the motion but only 222 Labour MPs supported the motion. 8 voted against, 17 abstained. Unforgivable.

a lot of people to say ' I told you so' when it all goes wrong - which it will.

But Remainers almost WANT it to go wrong, don't they? And I do so admire their ability to stare into the gloom and predict disaster. What a way to live. However it goes, and it won't be smooth sailing from the off - I have faith that the UK will not only survive but prosper too. Other countries have more faith in us than a certain section of our own population.

I dare say (IF) we do leave the EU with no deal there will be some turbulence. That is inevitable with change. However, as I mentioned in another thread, go and google UK booming economy investment in UK booms and UK booming exports

Or you could carry on standing on the edge of the Remainer predicted abyss, waiting to fall in.

Gonegirl Wed 12-Jun-19 19:02:37

Corbyn could be right about the autumn. We need a deal.

Framilode Wed 12-Jun-19 18:57:04

Be careful what you wish for and be prepared for a lot of people to say ' I told you so' when it all goes wrong - which it will.

By the way Conservative Home think Boris is more likely to revoke that go for no deal.

Jabberwok Wed 12-Jun-19 18:56:50

Hurrah!!???

*MPs have rejected a Labour-led effort to take control of Parliament's timetable, blocking the latest attempt to stop a no-deal Brexit.

The Commons opposed the move by 309 votes to 298.

If passed, it would have given opponents of a no-deal Brexit the chance to table legislation to thwart the UK leaving without any agreement on the 31 October deadline.*

The result of the vote was greeted with cheers from the Tory benches.

But Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn responded by yelling "You won't be cheering in September!"

Yes! Just when I was beginning to think we were going to be stuck in the Brexit time warp/twilight zone for infinity (and beyond.)

Common sense prevails.

We now have a bargaining chip. (One we should always have retained, but didn't thanks to (newly recruited) Remainer MPs like (turncoat) (for decades Eurosceptic) Corbyn.)
