Instead of gloom and doom (plenty about) how about we lift our spirits with any good news we hear to cheer us up?
?

As in today:
“THE Wall Street banking giant JP Morgan is about to embark on a major hiring spree in the City, despite Jamie Dimon, the chief executive, previously warning about Brexit job losses.

The growth plans stand in contrast to repeated warnings made by the bank’s boss about the effect Brexit could have on UK staff numbers”

You see Jabber that’s the problem - there are people in the UK at the moment who don’t feel that way for a variety of understandable reasons. It’s daft to think that there are not.

Lazigirl Tue 16-Jul-19 09:40:44

Let's hear it for the women's netball teams, who are getting a higher profile at last. On BBC this week and England are doing well. (Sadly I wasn't good at school)

Jabberwok Tue 16-Jul-19 10:01:40

Yes, hooray for that Lazigirl, also the cricket team is something to celebrate!

Unemployment is down again this month. So good that more people are in work. Good for their mental health and self esteem.

GGMK3 Do not make assumptions about other people on this thread. I am emphatically neither far right nor a leaver, but I am very happy to contribute to this thread.

Just think, if we were American we would have Donald Trump as our President. Now isn't that a reason to be glad to be living in the UK? No matter how dreadful our politicians are they are truly British and can never achieve American standards of awfulnessgrin.

England (does that count) won the World Cup (I thought that was footballconfused this weekend. You would have thought from the media coverage that the whole of the UK was obsessed by it. In fact more people watched the tennis from Wimbledon than watched the cricket.

That is how to keep the UK great. (we do not need to make it great)

I reply to the posts not the person M0nica. If you post telling people what they may or may not do I reach certain conclusions.

M0nica Tue 16-Jul-19 11:31:18

I wonder what they are? I am not sure that my post could be taken as telling people what they may or may not do, perhaps I should have put a 'please' in it somewhere.

It was more a cry of exasperation as the most boring subject ever, threatened to invade and infect this thread like a fungus. There are so many threads on the subject of leave/Remain/Brexit, that is nice for some more general threads to steer clear of it.

Possibly you are more likely to see such posts as being commands for you to do or not do something, I tend not to take things so personally.

No one watches cricket these days as it was taken off terrestrial television at the height of it's popularity and put onto Sky [ok for those that can afford it]. Same thing happened with Rugby. We do well and then the governing bodies sell to the highest bidder which means the vast majority of people lose interest, and that includes young people who could be moving the sport forward.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 16-Jul-19 12:54:50

Cricket World Cup was on “normal” TV on Sunday.

It’s the Sports Associations that sell out to the highest bidder.

Hurrah for Alan Turing on the new note.
Why do so many posts on Gransnet end in arguments?
Slainte.

Labaik Tue 16-Jul-19 13:09:49

I know it was on on Sunday; but prior to that people hardly knew the team were doing well...

NotSpaghetti Tue 16-Jul-19 14:27:08

Well I was VERY excited as the end of the cricket was totally riveting.
I love the buzz and psychological challenges of this most remarkable game. Sadly, we now learn that although “we” won, it was down to one-run which was awarded to us in error.
We should have lost... shock
Thankfully, although it takes the gloss off, it was still fantastic to watch. And the two teams were extremely civil and complementary of each other too.

Our national team winning at any sporting tournament is good news, but does it just distract from the parlous state we are in?

Beer and circuses indeed.

There is an interesting theory that the constant repetition of episodes of "Dad's Army" (which I always enjoy) had something to do with the leave vote - the rekindling of that good old war-time spirit - which served us well in the 1940s but is hardly right for the changed world we now inhabit.

Labaik Wed 17-Jul-19 16:13:54

I think people do have a craving for what seems a much simpler life but why they think Brexit is going to achieve that is beyond me...

Jabberwok Wed 17-Jul-19 17:31:40

Influenced by Dads Army!!!!!! I think most people who might have been would be either dead or well into their 90's!
I love D.A, but recognised even in the 60's when I was young, that times had changed considerably since the war, and to hark back now to how life was when when I was a baby which I clearly can't remember, from the vantage point of 73 in 2016, would be more than! ridiculous!

The N.T, beautiful coastline, super niche pubs, the green, green grass of home!

Happychops Thu 18-Jul-19 15:01:27

Why are people bickering? This post seemed to be created to encourage people to put on happy things to cheer people up, yet you squabble.
I feel sad that people who try to be optimistic and look on the bright side of things can’t do that on gransnet. If you do not want to join in with this lovely post, please feel free to look for another that would suit your needs better.

GracesGranMK3 Thu 18-Jul-19 15:28:12

You?
You now appears prepared to join in and stir happychops and do I hear a faint resemblance to Trump getting the crowds to shout "send her home" in your post? I thought we were all Gransnetters and all able to post where we choose.

Why do people think we need cheering up with repeating nice things about the U.K.? ( though mostly seems to be England on here). Maybe because we have huge social divisions, we have unstable government, the £ is tanking and there is lots of uncertainty about the future. Oh but never mind we have cricket on the village green, jam for tea and some beautiful scenery so we can all feel smug.

crystaltipps Thu 18-Jul-19 17:37:42

And of course we are far superior to all those foreign places.

Grandad1943 Thu 18-Jul-19 17:39:42

Many happy Brits here in Maastricht Belgium. They are all here along with many from other European Nations to see the famous André Rieu concerts that he and his orchestra give every year at this venue.

We arrived Saturday with tickets for the Sunday concert, and enjoyed ourselves so much we have managed to obtain six more (the size of our group) for tonight's performance.

This time we shall be seated outside one of the cafes around the outside of the square, so, the wine no doubt will be flowing like water. grin

Also been to several of the first and second world war monuments (Menin Gate etc) where there were also many Brits paying there respects and tributes, and that is a profoundly moving experience.

So, the British at their best out here, and great to witness.

Grandad1943 Thu 18-Jul-19 17:49:48

Apologies my above post should read "tomorrow nights concert", not "tonights concert"

Wine getting to me already. ??

GrannyGravy13 Thu 18-Jul-19 17:59:45

Enjoy Grandad have often watched his televised concerts ???

GracesGranMK3 Thu 18-Jul-19 18:13:05

Exactly crystaltipps. (Thu 18-Jul-19 17:37:01)

Lovely to hear of your trip Grandad.
