I can imagine we will be horror struck as next week plays out. The cabinet will be a sight to behold.

They've binned the ministerial code, along with any other honourable code.

These people have no codes of behaviour at all.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 26-Jul-19 20:23:55

I see Patel has been found to have breached the ministerial code for the second time. I expect this spiv of a government congratulated her

Greta grin
DD had compiled a list of idiomatic English sayings to teach her students and asked me if I had any useful additions - 'play the long game' was not one of them, but 'spend a penny' was. They spent more than one fun lesson learning them.

lemongrove Fri 26-Jul-19 17:08:35

Greta ?
Public loos around the Cotswolds area now charge 20pence a go! Daylight robbery.

lemongrove Fri 26-Jul-19 17:04:47

suzie grin yes, I think most of us are experiencing ‘burn out’ just now.

Greta Fri 26-Jul-19 15:34:38

Thank you for the idiom ”play a long game”. I hadn't come across it before. I have quite a good command of the English language by now but there is always more to learn. I do believe in lifelong learning.

When I first arrived in the UK as a young woman I had to go for a routine medical examination. A nurse asked me to ”spend a penny” I immediately opened my purse and offered her two halfpennies!

suziewoozie Fri 26-Jul-19 14:26:08

lemon I’m not sure I wouldn’t rather they just stopped doing interviews?

jura2 Fri 26-Jul-19 13:55:26

'In spite of your concerns, he is the strongest contender. The other candidates were eliminated very quickly. What does that tell you about the support he has?'

that he had the majority support of a tiny, totally unrepresentative minority of the people of this coutry. Can't remember the exact figure , but something less than .5 % sad

The predictions are that he will be very quickly hoisted by his own and his gang of extremists' petards - just sit back and watch. In the meantime, very hard work is going on to UNITE all in opposition- that amount to a lot more than Conservatives + Brexit Party.

Lessismore Fri 26-Jul-19 12:45:12

I fully understand that you can enjoy Europe and yet wish to leave the union.....so far so good.

I do find it rather strange when people are hard line in their views ( supporting NF for example),and yet happy to embrace the ex pat lifestyle.

Of course nobody has to answer anything or justify their lifestyle.

lemongrove Fri 26-Jul-19 12:37:39

I wish they would go back to doing interviews in the studio or inside somewhere ( anywhere!) that is quiet and we can all hear clearly.

POGS Fri 26-Jul-19 12:34:12

Re Steve Bray

He is what he wants to be, sets out to achieve, be A Pain In The Butt. That would be a badge of honour description to him.

He has every right to do what he has been doing for so long.

Others have the right to criticise him.

What I don't understand is why the TV channels think it good for the viewer interested in listening to their program content to hear him shouting over their interviews etc. His aim and endeavours are to disrupt what is being aired and follows the TV crews around to achieve that.

Then again perhaps Steve Bray and the EU flags flying in the background chimes with their opinion so they find him an asset. Who knows?

Grany Fri 26-Jul-19 12:24:21

It was hilarious like a comedy show Johnson's answers parliament his arms waving full of bluster not much sense, a joke. MPs on both sides found it laughable and Jacob Rees Smug. Is this really a PM Like Benny Hill ha ha.

POGS Fri 26-Jul-19 12:22:00

Maizied

You really are going for it today on a few threads aren't you.
I believe you when you said today :-

" I don't feel very polite this morning,"
Thank gawd I am ending up in good company being on the receiving end of your ire, I was feeling lonely.

lemongrove Fri 26-Jul-19 12:09:29

Hear hear Maw and also Pantglas1 ??

Pantglas1 Fri 26-Jul-19 12:07:16

Your explanation to Laibak’s spiteful comment was unnecessary UG - people filled with envy can’t be reasoned with in my experience.

I’m fortunate enough to be in a similar position to you and would hate to have to justify my right to spend my money on what I deem important.

As to the comment from another poster about voting to leave the EU and having holidays in Europe- how are the two things incompatible. You can enjoy someone’s company without living with them! And yes I am learning Spanish and enjoying the culture as I’m sure Urmstongran is.

MawBroonsback Fri 26-Jul-19 11:48:49

Now let's all have a hissy fit about it ...
Be my guest MaizieD you sound as if you are in the mood for one.......hmm

Whitewavemark2 Fri 26-Jul-19 11:42:36

petra yes of course. But remember that is put aside to mitigate Brexit. Not costed in the above as I indicated.

Neither is the loss to the revenue, together the loss of individual income, which is gob-smackingly frightening.

Currently Brexit is costing £40bn pa.

Minniemoo Fri 26-Jul-19 11:26:38

And of course, we'll have a few pennies left once we leave the EU.

petra Fri 26-Jul-19 11:24:35

Whitewavemark2
Not all the money will come from borrowing.
Did you not see, Rishi Sunak being interviewed? He stated that there is a £24 Billion war chest.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 26-Jul-19 11:07:08

I assume that the cost of implementing all the policies in Johnson’s statement is coming from borrowing?

The police recruitment in Johnson estimation will cost £1.1bn

Broadband. £30bn

Schools - teaching unions have estimated £12bn to get the schools back to the original level as Johnson has promised.

Changes to tax system

£10bn

Tax cuts on profit

Annual cost £3.3bn

Not included is the NHS extra promised and the cost of Brexit planning plus the severe loss to the revenue after Brexit. Social care has not been mentioned.

MaizieD Fri 26-Jul-19 11:06:39

Steve Bray is crowdfunded.

Like Tommy Robinson but he doesn't sniff his funding up his nose or buy big houses with it.

Now let's all have a hissy fit about it...

lemongrove Fri 26-Jul-19 10:48:07

However .....it wasn’t not voted for either. We were asked if we wanted to leave the EU.Not how.
Yes, a deal is preferable of course, but if it has to be no deal then we will deal with it, economically, socially.
Politically, who knows?

Whitewavemark2 Fri 26-Jul-19 10:42:28

If Johnson does go for no deal, I wonder what the consequences will be politically.

We all know what it will mean economically and socially.

Johnson has imposed a radical government on parliament that rejects consensus and cooperation. Not only is Labour and the Libs opposed, but also are large parts of the parliamentary Tories, and a third of the tiny membership.
All disenfranchised.
We ar3 now in recess, where Johnson can govern without accountability, but he has only about 6 weeks to enjoy this. He can’t hide from the fact of parliamentary numbers.

A no deal was never voted for.

Johnson’s disenfranchises the British public at his peril.

Firecracker123 Fri 26-Jul-19 10:36:16

Have a lovely holiday Urmstongran you don't need to explain anything to anyone.

lemongrove Fri 26-Jul-19 10:28:45

Maw grin
