So it's Boris

I know we knew this would happen but it didn't stop my heart sinking when it was confirmed. It's not even about party politics. It's about him. The country is in such a terrible position and the thought of him being the one trying to solve all the problems is farcical at best and utterly depressing.

Mr S saw this today and what worries me is that Benny Hill looks more intelligent than the other two

Grandad

I agree with your post.

The similarities/problems between the Labour and Conservative Parties are similar on so many fronts.

jura2 Tue 23-Jul-19 20:07:31

Urmstongran- your rudeness is quite something.

Yes, I am sort of home ' the home' where I was born but not the 'home' where I lived for the vast majority of my life. Where I had my children, where my children and grandchildren still are.

We came here to look after my very elderly parents in their last years of life - not for the 'high life', not to 'escape' the country (my OH's country). And yes, the exchange rate was good then- and he now 60% less, and will probably fall even further. Never asked you to care, just say it as it is.

2/3rd of my life are in the UK - where I got British nationality before the EU- kids born, Degree and career got... and my/our only source of income via UK pensions- and where we always thought we would return once our job here was done. Not your problem, I agree. Your rudeness and total lack of empathy is, sadly.

Yes

So can ALL Gransnet posters.

Some posters like to post oy between like minded, some even engage outside of their comfort zone.

Some only make statements but don't accept criticism, some make statements and accept criticism.

At the end of the day that is merely stating the bleeding obvious too.

She is ‘home’ just likes to actually cry over how WE (who live here) vote.

Only this morning, Ug you were patting yourself on the back about how polite you are on these threads. You spoke too soon.

SirChenjin Tue 23-Jul-19 19:50:49

Interestingly, the polls in France suggest otherwise.

Your concern for jura is touching. Unbelievable, but touching.

Day6 Tue 23-Jul-19 19:45:18

from Paris via several towns down France - we have met people from all over the world and all asked what on earth is going on in UK

Jura, as a Francophile and someone with friends in France, on our travels I hear only that they envy the UK in trying to get out of the EU.

I agree that May's negotiations were a complete and utter farce given it transpired as a remainer she would quite happily tie us to Brussels. I felt her deceit was shameful, because those were three wasted years. Nothing else however gives our French friends any reason for mirth.

The people of France, as you must know, are not exactly enamoured with their government, are they?

There are two sides to every coin.

Your distress does worry me. It seems rather...dramatic? I hope you are OK.

SirChenjin Tue 23-Jul-19 19:44:59

Did he practise calling the French "turds" until he was word perfect, I wonder?

Callistemon Tue 23-Jul-19 19:42:10

grin

SirChenjin Tue 23-Jul-19 19:41:37

Bonnet de douche, Rodders, bonnet de douche

Urmstongran Tue 23-Jul-19 19:40:49

Dominic Grieve’s mother is French. Not surprising he is fluent. Plus he spends a good deal of time at his family home in France. Practice makes perfect.

Callistemon Tue 23-Jul-19 19:39:44

otherwise!
(autrement)

Nor do we want the chaos that Brexit will bring. So we're at stalemate, and BJ is not the person to take the UK forward through this very turbulent, divisive and challenging time. Turkeys and Christmas spring to mind.

Lessismore Tue 23-Jul-19 19:37:04

Sorry, I forgot to include quotation marks.

Grieve is president of the Franco-British Society.[9] He was awarded the Legion of Honour in 2016.[9] He broadcasts in French on French radio and television.[10]

Calendargirl Tue 23-Jul-19 19:35:12

I can’t stand Philip Hammond. Whatever the M.P.’s think of Boris, surely now is the time to try and pull together and make Brexit happen. We’ve had three years of chaos, surely no one wants that to continue.

Is this good French?

Not particularly...he obviously has a good grasp of vocabulary but prefers to play the fool than look as though he's trying hard to say something meaningful (plus ça change). If you want to see a British politician who speaks good French, watch Dominic Grieve.

Greta Tue 23-Jul-19 19:16:48

Urmstongran:
I’m another who is glad Boris won. He is very popular (okay not so much on here but this isn’t Brexit H.Q.) he has great optimism, is clever, speaks very fluent French (enough to impress Macron not easy in itself!)

I think you may have to modify ”very fluent French”.

Quote: A clip, taken from the BBC's Inside the Foreign Office, shows Johnson speaking to Caroline Wilson (Europe Director at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office) about a speech he's about to give in Paris - he warns her that the speech is 'too boring' and 'needs more gags', to which she replies that she'll look at it.
She asks him: "Are you really going to do the whole raft of foreign policy issues in French?"
And you better believe he is. Well, he's going to try to, but if the next few moments of the clip are anything to go by then it's not going to be great.
The former Foreign Minister stumbles over his words as he attempts to read through the draft.
Not since Joey Barton's infamous 2012 speech have we seen such poor treatment of the beautiful French language.
Sensing that it's not going too well, Wilson suggests: "It might be best just to speak to the headlines in French."
But Johnson isn't having that, telling her: "They love it when I talk French." End of quote

Excellent Smithers! grin

Luckygirl Tue 23-Jul-19 19:07:21

He may be clever, but he is a known liar and a cheat.

But - hey! - what does that matter?

Nico97 Tue 23-Jul-19 19:06:44

I know I shouldn't, but every time I see Phillip Hammond I think of Mr Burns from the Simpsons -sorry, off topic I know grin

Callistemon Tue 23-Jul-19 19:06:42

I'm sure HM can handle him, phoenix!
Nothing seems to faze her

Elegran Tue 23-Jul-19 19:06:36

"We could be seeing the end of the two party system of politics in Westminster . . . " Good. Confrontational two-party politics are bad for democracy and ultimately for the country. Multi-party discussion and co-operation would be better.

Just so long as it doesn't become a ONE-party system.

Callistemon Tue 23-Jul-19 19:05:54

Boris spend a long time agonising over whether to back Cameron and remain or whether to campaign for leave.

If only he had jumped the other way we wouldn't be in this pickle now.
