Johnson and Brexit

In his statement Johnson underlined his pledge to ditch the Irish backstop, and ramp up preparations for no deal, and to leave on 31st October regardless of what happens.

Mays withdrawal agreement has been binned, however in a phone call Juncker signalled the EU27s intention of sticking with the deal already negotiated by the British Government. This includes the backstop.

Juncker told Johnson that the EU would be prepared to alter the political declaration.
Ireland has declared itself as “alarmed”
Barnier signalled that Johnson’s rhetoric almost certainly meant that the U.K. was going into a GE.

Expect a huge public information campaign and a large level of spending in preparation for no deal.

Boris’ action is not just right, necessary and overdue, but it will be welcomed by millions of people who want their politicians to stop complaining that it is simply too difficult to keep their promises.

I think a snap GE is a distinct possibility while Boris & his team are riding high!

GracesGranMK3 Sun 01-Sept-19 09:28:25

That's great labia but it does stop other things being true too.smile

GracesGranMK3 Sun 01-Sept-19 09:57:02

I am really sorry but my Kindle seems to have taken over what it will call people. Now on the computer so hopefully that will stop.

Whitewavemark2 Sun 01-Sept-19 09:58:08

??

GracesGranMK3 Sun 01-Sept-19 10:02:41

UG Again, what you say may be true but equally so is the opposite of what you say.

It seems the Great Johnson will be threatening the Conservative writers of the recent letter with a GE tomorrow if they will not toe the line.

My opinion is rapidly moving towards the idea that the Tories should have recognised their party contained two factions that were so far apart that they needed to split into two parties rather than set up the referendum. They will be blamed for the untold harm they have done the country by splitting it in the way they have.

I love its substitutions, though grin grin

GracesGranMK3 Sun 01-Sept-19 10:24:25

I know they seem funny but they may not to the people concerned so again, my apologies. What with the Kindle (no software so sometimes my own garbled sentences) and the software that occasionally thinks I'm American, I do wonder if anyone will make sense of it at times. Hey-ho, we do what we can smile

Government, governs by consent of the legislature. This morning on Marr - Gove scandalously hinted that if the legislature passed a bill to block no deal, then the government would ignore it.

Our whole traditional way of governing is being turned on its head..

varian Sun 01-Sept-19 12:27:41

Michael Gove, asked on the BBC’s Andrew Marr show whether the government would abide by any legislation passed by lawmakers opposed to its strategy of not ruling out a no-deal Brexit, said “lets see what the legislation says”.

uk.reuters.com/article/uk-britain-eu-gove/gove-says-government-will-look-at-any-no-deal-brexit-legislation-idUKKCN1VM14C

I watched Andrew Marr's interview with Gove this morning. It followed his interview with Starmer who answered the questions in a measured way, explaining that legislation would be initiated on Tuesday with the aim of preventing a no deal brexit. Right from the start of Gove's interview he obfuscated, recited tired old mantras, avoided the question and told lie after lie after lie.

At the end of the interview he refused, as Reuters reports, to say whether the government would abide by any legislation that was passed. I could not believe it, even coming from Gove. Surely it would be unprecedented for a government to ignore the law in this way?

Whitewavemark2 Sun 01-Sept-19 12:32:14

Imo government who ignores the law is illegitimate.

I agree

Andrew Adonis
If we have to choose sides...

I’m on the side of Major, Starmer, Sturgeon, Lucas, Obama, Heseltine, Merkel, Corbyn, Varadkar, Gordon Brown, Swinson, Benn, Femi, Macron & Tusk

Not on the side of Trump, Johnson, Putin, Farage, Salvini, Orban, Arlene Foster & Rees-Mogg

Easy

varian Sun 01-Sept-19 13:06:00

The trouble is, although they might just have heard of Johnson, Farage, Rees-Mogg and even Arlene Foster, so many folk don't realise they are on the side of Trump, Putin, Orban, Salvini, Bannon etc, and they have no idea just how that could hurt them.

Whitewavemark2 Sun 01-Sept-19 13:11:20

Integrity? What integrity is there in this government?

Who was appalled at the idea of prorogation but are now supporting it?

Johnson
Gove
Rudd
Javid
Morgan
Hancock

Whitewavemark2 Sun 01-Sept-19 13:21:30

I see the government has caved in on Free Movement, primarily because they misunderstood the implications of what they have been saying. Corbyn has been reminding them that they are wrong and it seems that quietly the government has finally understood Corbyn was correct.

A £100m public information campaign urging people to make sure they are prepared for Britain's departure from the EU has been launched by the government.

The government's largest ever public information campaign will see "Get Ready for Brexit" adverts run on TV, radio, social media and billboards ahead of Brexit day on 31 October.

£100,000,000 of our taxpayers money is being spent on brexit propaganda - and it seems we just have to accept it.

This is on top of the estimated £60 billion this brexit nonsense has already cost us.

We need to REVOKE ARTICLE 50 and stop this nonsense once and for all.

Day6 Sun 01-Sept-19 15:12:48

In YOUR opinion. Very few Leavers post on the political forum, and I can understand why. There are people looking in who, like me totally reject that idea.

You seem to forget that MILLIONS of people disagree with you and are quite happy that at long last it looks like we have a PM who will make progress and get us out of the EU. We hope the UK can move on from the mire we are in, caused by people who cannot accept a democratic vote and have been whining for the last three years.

varian Sun 01-Sept-19 15:16:01

You seem to forget that more millions (according to opinion polls for the last two years) disagree with you.

The Leavers have had it all there own way since the fraudulent referendum in 2016 and it is time for them to admit they made a mistake.

Whitewavemark2 Sun 01-Sept-19 15:20:51

Dictatorship by referendum

growstuff Sun 01-Sept-19 15:33:47

Can somebody please remind me when the UK had an honest democratic vote?

varian Sun 01-Sept-19 15:41:16

According to Day6 "Very few Leavers post on the political forum, and I can understand why"

I'm not sure that I've noticed a drop in the number of Leavers posting, but if it is true, could that be because they've changed their minds?

Day6 Sun 01-Sept-19 15:53:20

The Leavers have had it all there own way

Hahaha...they WON. More wanted to leave than wanted to stay. Every party was in support of a referendum too..almost al MPs in the Commons agreed to article 50 being triggered.

Come on...Parliament agreed to the referendum. That was democratic enough, wasn't it?

Also, party leaders (and Kier Starmer) famously stated they would stand by the result.

It's amazing how it all becomes democratic one minute, and 'fraudulent' the next. There was plenty of time before June 2016 for these naysayers to try and stop a referendum, wasn't there?

Only because they LOST, when they expected to win, are remainers clutching at straws.

varian Sun 01-Sept-19 15:56:09

This is not a playground game - we won - you lost- hahaha.

If this brexit nonsense is not stopped the whole country will lose.
