Johnson and Brexit
(1001 Posts)In his statement Johnson underlined his pledge to ditch the Irish backstop, and ramp up preparations for no deal, and to leave on 31st October regardless of what happens.
Mays withdrawal agreement has been binned, however in a phone call Juncker signalled the EU27s intention of sticking with the deal already negotiated by the British Government. This includes the backstop.
Juncker told Johnson that the EU would be prepared to alter the political declaration.
Ireland has declared itself as “alarmed”
Barnier signalled that Johnson’s rhetoric almost certainly meant that the U.K. was going into a GE.
Expect a huge public information campaign and a large level of spending in preparation for no deal.
Trash our democracy, more like. Our precious but imperfect democracy was badly damaged by the fraudulent referendum, won by lies, cheating and foreign interference.
I don't often quote Nicola Sturgeon but I had to agree with her yesterday when she said "I think today will go down in history as the day UK democracy died"
Now Boris is thinking of yet another tactic to ensure Brexit and wrong foot the plotters in the HoC. Extra bank holidays!
Maybe we could have a Brexit day one?
He is preparing to leave the EU on the 31st of October, deal or no deal, as promised to the electorate, and now some additional holidays?
Boris is becoming the gift which keeps on giving! Keep up the good work Boris.
Its good to know there are still some MPs who are willing to do what ever it takes to restore and respect democracy in the U.K.
George Young, Conservative party whip in the House of Lords, has resigned in protest to Johnson proroguing parliament.
He has said that closing down parliament is equivalent to undermining it.
The very people who wanted our parliament to take back control have diminished our parliamentary democracy.
POGS give it a rest. We have all heard the argument trotted out in the last 24h that this is normal practice before QS etc. etc. The point is we are not living in normal times. The country is facing an imminent major political decision and it should be crucial and paramount that parliament has the maximum opportunity to deal with it.
I remember the gushing comments about Davidson from Tory supporters on here how she would be a great leader etc. How the worms turn when someone else spouts a different message.
Best Politician in the UK I remember seeing on here ...nice to see Ruth go ,maybe she'll step down from her constituency too. Then people might get an MSP who will actually turn up for surgeries .ONE in several years is what Ruth turned up for ,my friend who lives there but wasn't one of Ruths slim...very slim majority is still . praying she goes altogether
Lots of Torykipperbrexers used to luuurve Ruth Davidson.
Barry 'thelabourpartiesposi
Ohh heaven help us, the LP have wheeled out Barry Gardiner again, another studiously disingenuous politician. He does no good to any cause.
Huh!
She'd have supported it all right if it looked like Boris would help her political career.
She’s done a Cameron. Was she humming on her way out?

"I'm surprised by your surprise Pogs".-
Begging pardon what am I ' surprised about'?
I'm surprised by your surprise Pogs after all most of the adults in the land have no time for politics, or so they think, unless it impacts them directly. The rules or conventions of politics is seen as irrelevant fluff. For pity sakes most don't understand the role of parliament and MPs. Come to think of it nor do some MPs

I thought she was going to tell us in the morning.
Ruth Davies, leader of the Scottish Conservative Party has just announced her resignation.
She has said she cannot support a no deal brexit.

Thank you. I am however sick and tired of personal insults but this is what my ' brain the size of a goldfish thinks'.

Queen's Speech
In: Prorogation and the Queen's Speech
'The Queen’s Speech is the centrepiece of the State Opening of Parliament: the official start of the new session. It normally takes place in May, but this can vary, particularly in a year when a general election is held.
The speech itself is written by the Government and is delivered by the Queen in the Chamber of the House of Lords. Its main function is to announce the Government’s priorities and to list the bills that they plan to introduce in the coming session.
MPs are summoned to the Lords Chamber by Black Rod (a Lords official) to watch the Queen deliver her speech.
When the ceremony is complete, MPs return to the Commons Chamber and begin debating the contents of the speech. The debate usually takes place over six days, with each day being assigned to a policy area, such as ‘the economy’ or ‘home affairs’.-

'Prorogation is the formal end of a session. This is not the same as dissolution, which is the formal end of a Parliament.' ---
Prorogation of Parliament is the normal process Governments of ' All ' colours use to end one session to start another by using the Queens Speech to set out the government's plans for the next year or so.
Examples, in 2016 Parliament was closed for four working days, while in 2014 it was closed for 13 days.
This year, Parliament would be suspended for 23 working days before the new Queen's speech on 14 October.
This includes the period Parliament suspends for the Autumn Party Conferenceseason which ' ALL' Political Parties are holding and none have cancelled.
Lib Dems - Bournemouth: 14 - 17 September 2019.
Labour - Brighton from Saturday 21 September to Wednesday 25 September.
Conservatives - Manchester 29th September – 2nd October 2019.
Green Party - Autumn Conference 2019 - 4-6 October, ICC Wales
Plaid Cymru - October 4TH-5TH at Swansea Grand Theatre, Swansea.
SNP - Aberdeen 13‐15 October, 2019.
There are 2 points of views.
1). The government is doing this to get a No Deal through.
2) The government needs to provide a Queen's Speech to set out government plans/set out it's domestic program.
The last Queen's Speech was in 2017 and it was cancelled in 2018 and the government has ironically been chastised for that and seen by many to not be getting to grips with 'domestic' issues.
I understand the ' controversy' but I find it odd something that is quite normal procedure is not understood and some comments are rather odd if the conversation is about the use of proroging Parliament.
Smirking a he spouts his lies
You're being disingenuous, POGS. Anybody with a brain bigger than that of a goldfish knows what game Boris is playing.
The rationalising that it's to get on with a domestic agenda is ridiculous anyway. We all know that there isn't really any new money and his arguments are smoke and mirrors.
The last head of government to try and frustrate parliament lost his head. Unless he effectively looses his battle, maybe it is time to metaphorically bring back the axe and block.
I certainly believe that he has ensured that the role of sovereign has to be replaced or modified so the hea5 of state takes advice from the speaker as the representative of the commons not the pm
pogs it isn’t the length of time that is important but the intention behind the proroguing.
Imo to deny the sovereign parliament the right to influence the Brexit debate is causing a democratic crises and unconstitutional.
WW
It is normal for government to prorogue government to get a Queen's Speech through.
The timing is of issue because it includes the Party Conference period.
That's how I read it.
The Queen only has to listen to the PM in this matter not Swinson, Corbyn and Uncle Tom Cobbley and all.
HM has been put in a most invidious position.
