J R-M - pernickity pedant?

I read that JRM has issued a list of rules for his staff to read, mark, learn and inwardly digest.
It's typical but pretty unbelievable that he's gone to such petty lengths as banning the word 'got', among a jumble of others. Men to be addressed as Esq. in memorandum and other such nonsense.
I wonder if there will be a fine for any staffer caught breaking the rules.
Your thoughts...
I think he's hoping to elevate the atmosphere to that of a gentleman's club such as Whites, Brooke's or Boodle's circa 17th and 18th century.

Please ,please please don't put his ridiculous behaviour down to an autistic spectrum disorder. My lovely son has it and he is as far removed from JR-M as chalk is from cheese.
I thoroughly dislike JR-M ; he is a leftover from the 1930's; I don't find him amusing , or gentlemanly or even interesting. He reminds me of a time when the upper classes kept the lower orders firmly in their place, and used religion to do so. I would like to ask him how , if it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than a rich man to enter into the kingdom of heaven he thinks it's o.k for his family to be worth about £100million? And does he not understand that most young people have never used Imperial measurements?

Give me strength!

stereotypical Welshman
I must take a look!

trisher Sun 28-Jul-19 20:41:59

I don't really care about JRM's religious beliefs and yes he probably has got wonderful manners. What I obect to is his political stance. heis a small state Conservative which basically means he wants to get rid of as much social support as he possibly can and cut what little welfare state we still have. Add to that his dodgy financial dealings and that is the man I dislike. The rest is irrelevant.

Callistemon Sun 28-Jul-19 20:43:00

confused
Perhaps some Welsh gransnetters may be able to judge.
Are those jackets made of Welsh wool? I don't see any stereotypical Welshmen wearing anything similar in the picture!

SirChenjin Sun 28-Jul-19 20:54:32

If you’re confusing Catholicism with pedantry then that’s very much your problem POGS.

jura2 Sun 28-Jul-19 20:59:19

Callistemon - what JRM thinks as a stereotypical Welshman !

jura2 Mon 29-Jul-19 09:17:53

a wonderful picture doing the rounds on the internet- of Rees-Mogg in a very oversize suit - with the caption 'this is what happens when you give your measurements in Imperial and your taylor works in metric '- mind you, I am sure JRM would no dream of not using an Imperial Taylor and who does not bill in Guineas.

SirChenjin Mon 29-Jul-19 09:37:24

...or tailor even. JRM would be most disappointed in you jura wink grin

(Sorry - I couldn't resist a bit of pedantry as homage to the Tory prat!)

Anniebach Mon 29-Jul-19 10:00:50

We will never hear JRM speak as John MacDonald did at the
O2, of his fellow Labour MP’s

‘You f*****g losers’.

trisher Mon 29-Jul-19 10:03:02

No because he wouldn't even consider Labour MPs as his equals. After all half of them are state educated and probably don't know how to use commas properly.

jura2 Mon 29-Jul-19 10:03:15

ahahaha SirC - boom boom lol.

NotSpaghetti Mon 29-Jul-19 10:12:41

I’m with Fishpieplease - I occasionally use an Oxford comma and don’t see a problem with it, but I expect he’s really just trying to improve written communication with and between his team.

My spelling, punctuation and grammar are not perfect but like many other Gransnetters, I do like to understand not only the general sense of something but the nuance of it too. The written word comes free of gesture and intonation so needs to be much more accurate.

That said, I still find the directive amusing. It would have to be him!

Anniebach Mon 29-Jul-19 10:20:16

Really trisher his equals? Does MacDonald always speak to his equals ! using the f word ?

NotSpaghetti Mon 29-Jul-19 10:27:08

MaisieD (and sorry if someone has already pointed this out), the USA has different sizes for our imperial measures. I lived there for a while and at first it was really confusing. For example, a British Pint is larger than an American Pint, and the same is true for gallons.

vintage1950 Mon 29-Jul-19 11:53:38

Speaking as a pedant, I wish that JRM would stop misusing the words 'in terms of' to mean 'regarding' or 'about'. I heard him do it twice in one sentence the other day. It's lazy usage and very often indicates that the sentence should be recast completely into plain and simple English.

I don't see what's wrong with 'got'. It has a long and unbroken history and is very useful. Would he rather we said 'Do you have....?' (American-influenced usage) or 'Have you got....?'?

Regarding imperial versus metric units, it's far too late to change the educational habits of several decades. My daughters say 'metres' rather than 'yards' (but still use 'miles' rather than 'kilometres'). US units are not always identical to British and metric units are used internationally, especially by scientists.

Callistemon Mon 29-Jul-19 12:02:16

We were always told never to use got when writing essays at school.

It is useful, though!

trisher Mon 29-Jul-19 12:04:27

Annie you either don't get irony or you don't know about JRM. He thinks state educated people are "potted plants"

Anniebach Mon 29-Jul-19 12:07:57

trisher you are excusing a shadow chancellor and possibly a future PM for calling fellow labour MP’s f*****g losers.

It cannot be excused

Callistemon Mon 29-Jul-19 12:12:08

If we're talking about types of speech I much prefer the pernickety style of Jacob Rees-Mogg to the foul-mouthed rants of John McDonnell.

I don't particularly like the politics of either - just commenting on their style of speaking.

Anniebach Mon 29-Jul-19 12:14:49

Same for me Callistemon

SirChenjin Mon 29-Jul-19 12:17:28

I prefer the style of speaking adopted by the politicians occupying the vast middle ground, rather than the either/or option of JRM or JM. I imagine most people do.

gillybob Mon 29-Jul-19 12:33:50

he thinks it's o.k for his family to be worth about £100million

Apparently he was worth £150 million in 2016 Loislovesstewie But hey what's £50 million between friends ? wink

I'm not sure how being a hedge fund manager fits in with his apparent devout religious leanings.

SirChenjin Mon 29-Jul-19 12:38:39

Perhaps God spoke to him and told him he wanted him to become a hedge fund manager?

gillybob Mon 29-Jul-19 12:41:07

Not to mention opening a branch in Ireland to take full advantage of Brexit

Loislovesstewie Mon 29-Jul-19 12:42:34

So poor JR-M has lost several million then? My heart bleeds for him, perhaps he could get some perspective on what it is like to live on a state pension?
