People still think EU nstionals are being treated fairly in the UK?

Boris Johnson and Pritti Patel both stated they would guarantee EU nationals an automatic right to remain in the UK.
This was a lie. The settlement scheme is flawed and the government has refused to enshrine the rights of EU nationals in law.

I am afraid the damage has now been done. I for one will never feel the same about this country again.

And now Priti Patel has jumped the gun and written to officially revoke Free Movement for 1st of November- without any plans to protect those already here- and some ridiculous figures for minumum salary of 33.000 ?!?

And British citizens in the EU who had been reassured I sick with fear and stress- the Pound is dropping and t it seems very likey that pension will no longer be index linked beyond 2020, and reciprocal health care agreement will more than likely be dropped too. It is really really scary for so many.

A real nightmare- and, if the parents are of different nationalities, and one of them is non-EU- multiply the nightmare by many extra 0s.

BTW I know many British expats working here in Switzerland who are sending Child maintenance back to UK- with kids finishing schools in UK where they are not paying taxes either, and with kids using NHS, etc. This child care is much much more than in the UK and with the exchange rate currently, even more so- bout 60% more than a few years ago (just as we are now 60% less- t'other way round).

And those who are currently un-employed and get 70 or 80% or salary paid for 2 years, as said, with support for health insurance, in finding jobs, courses training and free language courses. Good- as that is the whole point- goes both ways.

Settled status means nothing if other government agencies arent accepting it unless it goes to appeal!

The number of EU citizens living in other EU countries is only an estimate. Apparently, the figures are based on surveys at ports.

I think that a significant number of Leavers are absolutely and genuinely at a complete loss to comprehend why Remainers cannot see that the obvious and overwhelming benefits of leaving the EU are worth every moment of pain and suffering that it might cause to individuals. After all, if they (the Leavers) are prepared to face what they believe will be short term chaos disruption why shouldn't everyone else be ready to cheerfully do so, too?

This is not sarcasm, BTW. I'm trying very hard to see the Leavers' point of view.

A little anecdote to add a human perspective.....friends of mine came from Poland with a very ill daughter. They left everything behind because some specialist care was available here.
From the moment the plane touched down they were seeking work. They worked all the hours they could in horrible jobs way below what they had been doing. They clawed their way up and up and bought a house in a run down area which they have transformed into a beautiful home. They also slogged away at learning English.
Their children are bright,well behaved and popular.
Can people not see that advantages to having such neighbours?

However, I took it that this thread was and is about the total insecurity people from the EU are experiencing in the UK, still today. And the total insecurity of UK citizens living in the EU - and have no idea if their lives will be thrown upside down and inside out this autumn, or soon after. Can't plan anything, living in limbo, eaten with worry and stress, watching the Pound going down the chute, and their security with it. This especially if they are mixed families. It is perhaps difficult for anyone who has never left the UK to imagine - but I can assure you it is real, very real, for 10s of 1000s- both sides.

So, it seems I got it wrong- figures change all the time- and figures are not accurate either anyhow. I know several retired people, for instance, who live 'under the radar' in France and Spain - and not part of any figures.

And of course, a vast amount of UK citizens living in other parts of EU are retired- whereas most EU people in UK are active/working.

The benefits are reciprocal, is my point ... and often paid at a much higher rate than in the UK (as child benefit in France, or here).

As for child benefit, unemployment benefit, help with medical insurance, and so much more - UK people living in the EU and also in Switzerland- are all entitled to those- and often, as is the case here, at a much much higher rate than in the UK. It goes both ways- that is how it is meant to work.

Any figures I’ve seen have been in the region of nearly three times as many EU citizens in the UK as there are UK citizens in the EU.

Point being that Universal credit not an "unemployment benefit" it covers all sorts and

B. Uk tax payers who have a right to settle here and "pay in" have as much right to claim it as anyone else!

I agree that it's a myth when it comes to the generosity of UK benefits.

Parents don't need childcare if they're not in work.

The reason I asked was because a poster seemed to think that some EU national she knew thought she was rolling in it now she's a mother in the UK. My experience and knowledge of the availability of benefits (especially over the last few years) is somewhat different.

The childcare element of child tax credits is only for workers. Without it you can onlu claim partial child tax credits not all elements.
