Post Brexit food

The BBC is reporting about food suppliers plans post Brexit and their efforts to try to keep the food supply flowing.

It is clear that the biggest issue is going to be around fresh fruit and vegetables and the sufficient level to ensure that there is no shortage.

However, if, in the event of a shortage I think that the government should definitely introduce a form of rationing, in order that the wealthy, those living close to lots of stores etc should not be able to snap up this essential part of our diet at the expense of the poor and vulnerable.

I have heard that Morrison's only buy meat from their own British farmers so maybe shop there for meat unless you can buy directly from farm shop as I often do. Hopefully we will have some deals ready to start on Nov 1st.

Watching tonight’s BBC News and it is crystal clear that a no deal Brexit is going to be suicidal.
Why are Boris and his cronies ( and actually the rest of them) so dead set on this catastrophic course?
Is it fear of losing face? A dangerous game of brinkmanship?
Did we the public have any idea of what was in store?
Did anybody tell it like it is?
FGS will somebody please be the first to blink and get back to some sort of sanity. ?

Already signed Varian

varian Wed 07-Aug-19 20:45:43

I am just one of at least 6,095,350 people who have signed this petition asking for Article 50 to be revoked so that the UK remains a member of the European Union.

This petition is still open.

varian Your quote: The best thing we can do to redress the situation for our children and grandchildren is to campaign to STOP BREXIT.

Did you vote for any of these varian?

Here's a list of petitions put forward to parliament: petition.parliament.uk/petitions?q=Brexit

So many petitions and nothing's happened. Current one asking for a 2nd referendum has just closed with the Gov saying no.

Oooh! Have you managed to find a pureblood Brit yet?

growstuff Wed 07-Aug-19 20:23:42

Snap!

growstuff Wed 07-Aug-19 20:22:59

Where exactly is there going to be extra land to grow all this stuff? And who is going to farm it? How is it all going to be ready by 1 November?

MaizieD Wed 07-Aug-19 20:18:21

I'm really intrigued as to where all those people living in high rise flats in cities are going to grow their own produce. Window boxes?

And all those people living in the thousands of Victorian workers' terraced houses with just a small back yard. Do you think a couple of grow bags could produce enough to feed a family?

Even if we do up agricultural production who is going to harvest it once the EU workers have stopped coming?

Because the old pureblood Brits don't seem very keen to do it...

GracesGranMK3 Wed 07-Aug-19 19:46:44

Except that is all a bit of a strawman argument hilarious. It is most certainly not what we were told about leaving the EU.

What a brilliant opportunity. Mental health and physical health improved by supporting/or growing our own produce. Everything eaten 'in season' reducing air/sea miles. Imported sugar and oils (some causing jungle clearance to produce) removed. Sugar reduction in food (unless we get our own sugar beet production up). Great opportunities for our own farmers!!

What if the electricity goes off (Wed 07-Aug-19 17:01:37)

Leo Smith at GridWatch has been monitoring the interconnector flows between Scotland and England via a National Grid link since December 2015 Callistemon. The evidence shows that it is pretty much a one-way journey of power from Scotland to England. Now if you wanted leverage once you were an independent country what would you be saying about your exports of electricity?

It won't happen of course. The Brexiters tell us nothing can go wrong and we believe in the Brexiters just as we believe in Father Christmas and the Tooth Fairy. So that's alright then.

I agree with you Barmeyoldbat and Seiko70. I have only recently joined Gransnet and i'm afraid I won't be sticking around. It seems respect for each others views is in short supply here, never mind fruit and veg!! People should be able to air their views and differences of opinion without having insults hurled at them. I thought us 'Gransnetter's' were supposed to be older and wiser for this kind of verbally aggressive behaviour. I wish you all a happy future for yourselves, your families and friends. Bye.

Annaram1 Wed 07-Aug-19 19:14:21

I am going to panic buy right now.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 07-Aug-19 18:00:32

Anyone see the Sainsbury’s bod on BBC news?

Of course he knows nothing about food supply.

Seiko70 Wed 07-Aug-19 17:58:43

?

Barmeyoldbat Wed 07-Aug-19 17:07:56

I was going to post on this thread but it become lets have aj bitch thread which is happening more and more.

Doreen5 Wed 07-Aug-19 17:02:49

Buy local, seasonal produce and, if you can, grow your own! The big supermarkets are already buying more locally sourced fruit and veg.

Callistemon Wed 07-Aug-19 17:01:37

What if the electricity goes off shock

Hetty58 Wed 07-Aug-19 17:00:59

Rationing wouldn't make things fair for everybody. Some people around here already have packed a few extra freezers in their garages and stockpiled non-perishables - just in case!

Callistemon Wed 07-Aug-19 16:51:38

Gonegirl if you are head girl you can hand out the lines and possibly detention too. grin

Callistemon Wed 07-Aug-19 16:48:27

I think we should support the commonwealth countries actually and buy more from them.
Well, Australia, for instance, has found new markets in the Far East.

Gonegirl Wed 07-Aug-19 16:47:06

GracesGranMk2 Gonegirl please tell me when you were appointed head-girl of food?

I'm sorry. I thought this thread was open to whoever wished to express a view. confused I didn't realise it was a private thread.

Callistemon Wed 07-Aug-19 16:46:24

French and Spanish farmers have 27 other countries to find new deals, so I expect they'll be just fine.
Presumably they have deals with those 27 countries already - all of which could have reached the limit of their requirements.

I hope those farmers/businesses which do export to the UK now are putting pressure on their leaders and EU leaders to look again at the deal on offer for all our sakes.

Intransigence on both sides will do neither side any good.
