varian Tue 08-Oct-19 08:42:27

What is the source of this claim Ug????

Urmstongran Tue 08-Oct-19 08:41:51

“This is political dynamite. The European Union gave a 3.5m euro donation to Transparency International, which in peak irony is supposed to be an anti corruption watchdog with a mandate to foster, erm, transparency.

It is run by Jo Swinson’s husband. Has Jo Swinson declared this conflict of interest to the House of Commons? No.

Is that a breach of House of Commons protocol? Yes.

Is it a breach of the law? Yes.

So who is Jo Swinson’s husband? His name is Duncan Hames. He is the director of policy at Transparency International UK.”

varian Tue 08-Oct-19 08:39:12

It is clear that the SNP are keen to attack Jo Swinson because she has taken votes from them but that is no excuse to post fake news.

It is not true that the LibDems will only form a coalition with the Tories. The LibDems are or have been in coalition with the Labour party in many Local Councils, the Welsh Assembly and the Scottish Parliament.

However Jo has made it clear that the Libdems will never enter a coalition with a Johnson led Tory Party or a Corbyn led Labour Party.

The LibDems are the strongest Remain party. Many Remainers in Scotland are horrified at the willingness of the SNP to support Corbyn who wants a "Labour brexit" in exchange for the chance to have another shot at destroying the UK.

Urmstongran Tue 08-Oct-19 08:39:04

This hit the news 4 days ago ....

Swinson fails to declare family company was given 3.5m euro by the European Union

“She voted for the LibCon Bedroom Tax that mired millions of the poorest in costs they could not afford. She voted for the LibCon Welfare reforms which attacked the finances of those least able to withstand the onslaught. She voted for the LibCon policy to treble the tuition fees of students least able to pay.

Could it get worse for Jo Swinson? In a word, yes.

“IT LOOKS LIKE JO SWINSON’S PASSION TO STOP BREXIT OR A NO-DEAL BREXIT “AT ANY COST” HAS TERMS AND CONDITIONS APPLIED.

Swinson’s point blank and quite illogical refusal to join the cross-party coalition to prevent a no-deal Brexit has a 3.5m euro explanation. And the irony of the whole context goes to show that the LibDems are as insincere and deceitful as they ever were.”

paddyann Tue 08-Oct-19 00:41:03

they're just heading to their natural home Swinson is more Tory than anything else. She has voted WITH the tories more often then even Reece Mogg.Self confirmed feminist Swinson hasn't offered any help or advice to WASPI women when 3.8 MILLION of us have been fiddled out of upwards of £40k each ....why would she its one of the things SHE voted for .As she'll ONLY join a coalition WITH the tories ..I wouldn't get too excited about any announcements she makes re Brexit or anything else really

Heidi Allen has been to more parties than Katie Price.

Stephen Dorrell was always what was called a "one nation Conservative" but having seen how his old party has changed, he has also changed by becoming more liberal.

It is OK for people to change their political opinions, which is why we need a People's Vote as so many who were fooled in 2016 have now seen how disastrous any kind of brexit would be.

Grany Mon 07-Oct-19 15:47:43

You may not remember Stephen Dorrell.

He is an ex Tory health minister who personally profited from & encouraged NHS privatisation in 2015.

Yesterday, Stephen Dorrell joined the Liberal Democrats.

How would teachers vote in a 2019 General Election?

A general election is highly possible in the next few months. Teachers are a critical voting mass as there’s half a million of them! But who would teachers currently vote for?

This time last year, Labour support was holding strong, with 48% of teachers saying they would vote Labour.

Now, this intention has collapsed to just 29% of teachers saying they would vote Labour if an election occurred tomorrow. This is particularly surprising given that 60% of once teachers said they voted Labour in the 2017 election.

Here is why former cabinet member and longserving Tory MP Stephen Dorrell has joined the LibDems.

The Liberal Democrats’ most recent recruit Nicola Horlick has revealed there are so many Tory and Labour MPs discussing a defection to the party that there may be a shortage of winnable seats for them at a General Election.

In an interview with i, the high-profile fund manager and City “superwoman” also said she was confident of taking the Chelsea & Fulham seat from Tory incumbent Greg Hands.

Ms Horlick said: “A lot of MPs from both Labour and the Tories are talking to [Lib Dem Leader] Jo Swinson about defecting, but the trouble is we’ve got all our candidates already.”

Liberal Democrat PPCs are chosen by the local party members and there is a rigorous selection process. There are apparently many Remain MPs from both Tory and Labour Parties who would like to join the LibDems and fight a seat as the LibDem candidate at the next general election. Many may have to make a difficult decision.

Responding to Boris Johnson’s speech to Conservative Party Conference, Leader of the Liberal Democrats Jo Swinson said:

"When you strip away the bluff and bluster, this was a speech by a Prime Minister who is determined to crash us out of the EU without a deal.

Fanatically repeating ‘Get Brexit Done’ does not give any comfort to the cancer patient worried about accessing their medication, or the factory worker whose job is on the line. Getting Brexit done puts their lives and their jobs at risk, and that is why Liberal Democrats are working hard to stop it.

The Liberal Democrats are determined to stop Brexit, because the best deal possible is the one we have right now as members of the European Union."

I think you will find that those who object most to a Corbyn government are not the Lib dems but a much larger number of former Tories, former Labour, Independents and even some current Labour MPs.

dragonfly46 Thu 03-Oct-19 09:08:44

Dianne Abbot maybe all those things you say Varian but she was hopeless at the dispatch box and is hopeless in interviews often getting her facts wrong. I wonder how she has managed to stay in parliament so long. Of course she did sleep with JC.

Grany Thu 03-Oct-19 09:01:14

Jo Swinson is the biggest obstacle to stopping a No Deal Brexit. We don’t need the student-politics, tokenistic, revoke-but-actually-working-against-it nonsense, that we are getting from the Lib-Dems. We need them to work with the progressive majority

varian Thu 03-Oct-19 08:52:19

I question your information. Here are the Annual Accounts of Transparency International UK, which show the true figures. In the year 2018/2019 the EU made no contribution. In 2017/2018 a grant of £2000 was made by the EU climate change fund. (see page 23 of the Annual Report)

Firecracker123 Thu 03-Oct-19 08:18:10

In 2018 Transparency International received more than 4 million from the EU.

Jo Swinson husband is their Director of Policy, no wonder she is fighting to stay in the EU.

In 2018 the UK's contribution to the EU was 13.2 billion.

The corrupt face of politics making out staying in the EU is best for the UK but really she wants to stay in for her Bank balance and stay on the EU gravy train.

I do take your point Joelsnan, but people of colour and women have had a long hard fight to achieve equality and respect and the fight is still going on. So, while the idea of not needing to comment on the colour of a person's skin, or their sex, is highly desirable, it is unfortunately still necessary to celebrate explicitly all these 'firsts' for women and ethnic minorities. It is shameful that here nearly 20 years into the 21st century that these 'firsts' are only now taking place. At the same time, though, it is also hopeful.

Amagran Thu 03-Oct-19 01:33:15

My goodness, Jo Swinson and the LibDems must take heart at the vehemence of their detractors in the media (and reflected here on GN) - they must be doing things right to have got their opponents so worried. I imagine that they will take the level of unwarranted and inaccurate criticisms being levelled at them by supporters of the Labour and Conservative parties as a measure of the threat they clearly present to these parties.

Grany Thu 03-Oct-19 01:09:09

Who funds Jo Swinson? the same backers who support Johnson and no deal. She is a yellow Tory voted for austerity measures more times than some Tories and voted to cut minimum wage and still backs austerity tightening your belt.

varian Wed 02-Oct-19 20:08:05

Dianne Abbot has served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Hackney North and Stoke Newington since 1987. She was the country's first black woman MP as well as the longest serving black MP in the House of Commons. As a member of the Labour Party, she has held various positions in successive Shadow Cabinets; Abbott has been Shadow Home Secretary since 2016.

It is right that parliament should reflect the diversity of the UK population. Dianne has been a doughy champion of her constituents and the Labour our party. She has also been subjected to more racist and sexist abuse than any other MP.

It is good that Jo Swinson has congratulated Dianne on her representing her party at PMQs.

Joelsnan Wed 02-Oct-19 19:48:28

varian
What has her colour got to do with it? Either she is a good politician capable of taking on PMQs or she is a black woman.
Do we say Rupa Haq, the coffee coloured MP etc.
We have got to stop identifying people by the colour of their skin perpetuating division and start promoting inclusivity.

varian Wed 02-Oct-19 19:43:16

Huge congratulations to @HackneyAbbott on being the first black person to do #PMQs from the despatch box. Her appearance is an historic example of the role black people play in shaping our society this #BlackHistoryMonth
