Dr Sarah Woolaston MP has joined the Libera Democrats. Great news!

varian Tue 03-Sept-19 16:24:52

Jo Swinson, replying to the Prime Minister's stastement, has just welcomed Dr Phillip Lee MP (former Conservative) to the Liberal Democrats.

He had crossed the floor and was sitting beside Jo Swinson, so this government has lost its majority!

varian Tue 03-Sept-19 16:55:07

Dr Phillip Lee cited this disgusting exchange between Dr David Nicholls and Jacob Rees Mogg as the last straw which made him decide to cross the floor and join the LibDems.

Dr Lee is a Consultant Neurologist and the person who wrote the medical section of the Operation Yellowhammer Report.

The way Mogg spoke to him was appalling, calling him a fearmonger and a Remoaner.

I do not think Phillip Lee will be the last MP to decide to leave the party of JRM, BJ and Cummings.

Luciana Berger MP has joined the Libdems!

Whitewavemark2 Thu 05-Sept-19 14:19:35

This

3 men have been convicted of antisemitic abuse against Luciana Berger. They are:

Garron Helm
Joshua Bonehill-Paine
John Nimmo

A 4th man, Jack Coulson was convicted of a terrorism offence.

All of the above self-identified as far right/neo-Nazis.

None were Labour supporters.

varian Thu 05-Sept-19 19:00:40

Luciana Berger Liberal Dmocrat MP posts-

"This is a moment of national crisis.

Leaving the Labour party after being a member for almost 20 years was one of the hardest decisions of my life. But Labour has changed beyond recognition. It is now institutionally antisemitic, overtaken by the far left and consumed by a Brexiteer leadership.

My values remain the same. I fundamentally believe in equality, opportunity for everyone, social justice and the unequivocal, unqualified condemnation of discrimination.

I am proud to be an internationalist. I know the UK can play a leading role in the world. We can best do this as members of the European Union. That is why I have fought tooth and nail to stop Brexit through a people’s vote.

The Liberal Democrats today best represent my values and are unequivocal in wanting to stop Brexit and are committed to securing Britain’s future as a tolerant, open and inclusive society.

At this moment of national emergency I am joining Jo Swinson and the Liberal Democrats, to offer a vital, positive alternative to Johnson and Corbyn. I want to help build a future that our country deserves."

Democracy cannot have a gun to its head

The Liberal Democrat’s have said that if the 21 Tory rebels are not allowed back into the party, the Liberals and the Greens would not put up a candidate against MPs Rory Stewart, Sam Gyimah, Margot James and Dominic Grieve.

In return, if they were to beat the official Tory candidates and win election to the Commons, they would agree to take a 'soft whip' from the Liberals, meaning they would vote with Ms Swinson's party on selected issues.

Something to cheer the Lib Dem’s

If Ken Clarke is considering voting
@LibDems
at the next General Election, you can be pretty confident that many, who would normally vote Conservative, are also thinking of do the same.

Angela Smth MP has joined the Libdems.

varian Sun 08-Sept-19 09:20:23

Angela Smith said: "We are facing a national crisis and people deserve better than the choice of the old two parties."

Ms Smith is the third MP to join the Lib Dems in a week, after Luciana Berger and Philip Lee defected.

She quit Labour in February to form the Change UK party with six other MPs.

The decision by the Ms Smith, who is MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge, brings the total number of Lib Dem MPs to 17, with Mr Lee dramatically crossing the floor from the Conservatives on 3rd September.

Do you really think these defectors have joined the Lib Dems for any reason other than self interest; that is, how to hang on to their parliamentary career, and nice salary. How many of them do you think are already eyeing up the Leadership: Umana and Berger, and probably, if you are really lucky, Anna Soubry will be along soon.

varian Sun 08-Sept-19 10:08:45

LibDem leader Jo Swinson has tweeted "Welcome Angela Smith to the Lib Dems. She’s the sixth new MP to join us in the last three months, along with over 30,000 new members. Together we can stop Brexit.”

varian Sun 08-Sept-19 10:58:07

Stephen Bush, writes in the New Statesman-

"Amber Rudd’s exit increases the Liberal Democrats’ pressure on Boris Johnson
Rudd’s exit, and their capture of the ex-Labour MP Angela Smith, add to the feelgood factor around the Liberal Democrats. "

Urmstongran Sun 08-Sept-19 11:14:45

Together we can stop Brexit.”

From the Liberal DEMOCRATIC Party. What an oxymoron!

Anniebach Sun 08-Sept-19 11:17:11

How can the Libs stop Brexit?

varian Sun 08-Sept-19 11:31:37

The first step is to prevent us crashing out of the EU with no deal.

Then have a referendum in which people were asked whether they want to accept whatever deal has been negotiated or whether, knowing the implications, they would prefer to Remain.

The Libdems, working with others, would campaign strongly for Remain.

varian Sun 08-Sept-19 12:47:21

Raab & his Government's plans to "test to the limit" how they can get around the Bill preventing No Deal shows there's no bar for how low they'll stoop - @thomasbrake

The LibDems will keep fighting to stop a dangerous No Deal & Brexit altogether.

Quite the reverse in some cases! Umunna has almost certainly thrown away his parliamentary career. He could have stayed as a Labour MP in Streatham until retirement if he'd wanted.

He's standing in the Cities of London and Westminster in the next GE, where he stands only a very slight chance of winning.

growstuff Sun 08-Sept-19 12:58:54

I would be very surprised if Anna Soubry wins another election. She's a Tory at heart. Nevertheless, she must be worth a fortune on the TV/game show and after dinner speech circuit.

growstuff Sun 08-Sept-19 13:01:04

I'm a paid up member of the LibDems. I have reservations about Jo Swinson, but I'll give her a chance. I'll probably stick with the LibDems because they do good things locally.

dragonfly46 Sun 08-Sept-19 13:02:19

eazybee I do not think these MP's are self serving they are sticking by their beliefs. I do not think Anna Soubry is self serving either but is passionate about what she believes in. I am waiting with bated breath to see what my MP Nicky Morgan is going to do because she certainly is self serving and is very ambitious.

growstuff Sun 08-Sept-19 13:08:03

I agree with you dragonfly. Whether or not the LibDems (and Swinson in particular) have the ability to hold such a diverse bunch together, only time will tell.

I would like to see the LibDems having policies for a post-Brexit country, which go some way towards healing the rifts, but (probably understandably) they're directing their efforts and time towards Brexit. Unfortunately, Norman Lamb has said he won't be standing in another GE. He's been very ill.
