I wonder why he wants it?

If it's true, typical megalomaniac.

'Greenland', says Trump to himself. 'Ah yes, nice greens for a new golf course!'
He has two golf courses in Scotland, including Turnberry which is a championship course. I don't think the Scots will now be selling him any more land, so why not turn his attention elsewhere? Hmm

I do know the history of NI ,thank you Jabberwok,I had first hand from GP's who grew up there in the early 20th century .Of course they may have been biased because as Catholics they had many restrictions placed on them and in fact my GGM's family who lived through the famine were told if they changed their religion they could have food for their children ....so i've had a side of it maybe you haven't heard .They came to Scotland where they had much fairer treatment .When asked though they always said they were IRISH ...not British or NI .

Jabberwok Sat 17-Aug-19 18:52:25

Well there you go Paddyann, then I'm sure you are aware that a good proportion of Protestant Irish were imported into NI in the early 17th cent courtesy of James V1th/1st which explains their adversion to the Catholic south, hence them opting to remain inside the UK. Scotland has never been adverse to a little Empire building itself on the quiet!! Nova Scotia sound familiar!!?

Jabberwok Sat 17-Aug-19 19:00:48

The famine was in the 19th not 20th century! 1845 to 1849.

Trump may want Greenland but I seriously doubt that Greenland wants Trump.

Tuppence15 Sat 17-Aug-19 21:08:43

I agree with Coolgran65 . I personally consider myself British and not a pawn to be used in negotiations for this disastrous mess that the government has got us in to.

Trump considering buying Greenland.........maybe it's fake newssmilesmilesmile

Greta Wed 21-Aug-19 09:38:06

"Svaret er nej!"

And Donald Trump applauded PM Mette Frederiksen's directness!

Davidhs Wed 21-Aug-19 10:02:50

There are around 50,000 Greenlanders living in what must be pretty unpleasant circumstances, there probably is a price that they would accept to become a US State , how about £1 million each, they could have a referendum. That sounds too cheap, but I would bet that a majority would vote to live somewhere pleasant and have money to spend.

Elegran Wed 21-Aug-19 11:13:06

And so the rich shall inherit the earth.

Callistemon Wed 21-Aug-19 11:26:28

How can you judge that living in a country is unpleasant unless you have lived there, Davidhs, or were in fact a native of that country?

56,688 people (could be a couple more by today) living on the world's largest island, presumably quite happily - why would you think they would want to become an American state?

Fennel Wed 21-Aug-19 11:50:00

He has gone off in a huff.:

Littlejohn’s take on the whole situation was meant as a joke, but had some thoughtful points worth a look, if anyone’s interested!

Callistemon Wed 21-Aug-19 12:06:37

Who does he think he is! (Don't answer that one)

Toddler behaviour again.

Dinahmo Wed 21-Aug-19 14:47:32

Trump has an ulterior motive for cancelling his visit. Obama is going to be in Denmark around the same time and he is worried that Obama will receive more applause and positive press comments than he will.

Callistemon Wed 21-Aug-19 15:44:42

Do you think this was an elaborate set-up so that he could make it an excuse to cancel?

Dinahmo Wed 21-Aug-19 16:31:14

Yes

catladyuk Wed 21-Aug-19 16:35:38

Golly gosh, is it April 1 already??

silverlining48 Wed 21-Aug-19 17:16:44

I head that too and there’s no doubt that Obama will get a much better reception than trump, who apparently invited himself to visit Denmark. Now he wants out, and making this stupid suggestion and the response of not for sale, the reason fir cancelling his visit.

Fennel Wed 21-Aug-19 17:26:18

Well explained, I missed that. Thanks to all!

phoenix Wed 21-Aug-19 17:30:08

A "State" visit must surely involve a lot of planning and expense on the part of the hosts.

How bloody rude of Trump to cancel, for whatever reason (excluding death or war!)

M0nica Wed 21-Aug-19 19:24:19

Trump is bloody rude - and coarse and vulgar and ignorant and stupid ....... one could go on all day listing his ouitstanding fetures, none of the complimentary.

He is the kind of man who would render his own grandmother down for lard, if he could make a profit on the deal.

Barmeyoldbat Wed 21-Aug-19 19:49:05

Nothing wrong with living in Greenland except the cost of living is very high.

Callistemon Wed 21-Aug-19 22:35:11

Worth paying a bit more to avoid being the 51st State of America

Blinko Thu 22-Aug-19 08:32:30

Of all the outlandish suggestions Trump has made, surely this must take the biscuit? Buying (part of) another country??
