I wonder why he wants it?

If it's true, typical megalomaniac.

There are around 50,000 Greenlanders living in what must be pretty unpleasant circumstances, there probably is a price that they would accept to become a US State , how about £1 million each, they could have a referendum. That sounds too cheap, but I would bet that a majority would vote to live somewhere pleasant and have money to spend.

"Svaret er nej!"

And Donald Trump applauded PM Mette Frederiksen's directness!

Trump considering buying Greenland.........maybe it's fake newssmilesmilesmile

Tuppence15 Sat 17-Aug-19 21:08:43

I agree with Coolgran65 . I personally consider myself British and not a pawn to be used in negotiations for this disastrous mess that the government has got us in to.

Trump may want Greenland but I seriously doubt that Greenland wants Trump.

Jabberwok Sat 17-Aug-19 19:00:48

The famine was in the 19th not 20th century! 1845 to 1849.

Jabberwok Sat 17-Aug-19 18:52:25

Well there you go Paddyann, then I'm sure you are aware that a good proportion of Protestant Irish were imported into NI in the early 17th cent courtesy of James V1th/1st which explains their adversion to the Catholic south, hence them opting to remain inside the UK. Scotland has never been adverse to a little Empire building itself on the quiet!! Nova Scotia sound familiar!!?

paddyann Sat 17-Aug-19 17:21:58

I do know the history of NI ,thank you Jabberwok,I had first hand from GP's who grew up there in the early 20th century .Of course they may have been biased because as Catholics they had many restrictions placed on them and in fact my GGM's family who lived through the famine were told if they changed their religion they could have food for their children ....so i've had a side of it maybe you haven't heard .They came to Scotland where they had much fairer treatment .When asked though they always said they were IRISH ...not British or NI .

'Greenland', says Trump to himself. 'Ah yes, nice greens for a new golf course!'
He has two golf courses in Scotland, including Turnberry which is a championship course. I don't think the Scots will now be selling him any more land, so why not turn his attention elsewhere? Hmm

Jabberwok Sat 17-Aug-19 16:28:12

Nothing to do with Empire Paddyann, but everything to do with NI insisting on staying part of the UK when Ireland became dependant in c1922! If you don't believe me try googling it or better still a history of Ireland will do! As for giving it back!!!! (a I doubt very much that they'd want to go, and (b I doubt very much that Eire would want them!!!

Callistemon Sat 17-Aug-19 09:12:55

Two minds, one thought, Elegran!

Someone said 'Green Land' and he thought 'Golf Green'

I think M0nica's remark was not meant as a serious comment, Coolgran.

Greta Sat 17-Aug-19 09:07:00

Elegran smile

He'd better hurry up before the Mexicans get there.

Elegran Sat 17-Aug-19 09:00:47

Someone must have told him that Greenland is an island, so he thinks it will be just right for a nice little golf course with a luxury hotel and a few gated executive holiday homes with helipads, for US tycoons to fly in for a couple of days relaxation in the tropical green paradise.

Coolgran65 Sat 17-Aug-19 08:07:14

Oh dear.... Monica and paddyann But I don't want to be sold or given to the Republic of Ireland.

paddyann Sat 17-Aug-19 00:21:49

Oh dear why should we sell NI to the republic? We should just give it back it was never "ours" to start with .Delusions of "empire"??

Callistemon Fri 16-Aug-19 23:33:43

Beewitch well, if someone tells him it's somewhere to the left of Scotland, right of his neighbour Canada
Does he want to build a golf course there?

jura2 Fri 16-Aug-19 22:38:15

military strategy too?

EllanVannin Fri 16-Aug-19 22:31:04

So there you are------oil and gas !! Galore.

jura2 Fri 16-Aug-19 20:13:18

Glammy57 Fri 16-Aug-19 19:45:41

BeeWitch ?

BeeWitch Fri 16-Aug-19 19:23:09

I read a comment on Twitter which suggested that Trump should first find Greenland on a map. smile

Fennel Fri 16-Aug-19 19:16:06

I do hope you're right, grandtante.
You never know with Trump.
After all, his mother was from one of the islands off the west of Scotland.

TerriBull Fri 16-Aug-19 15:59:44

.....and he's going to get the Mexicans to pay to build some walls around the few urban settlements to keep the polar bears out!

grandtanteJE65 Fri 16-Aug-19 15:55:44

Greenland is not for sale; it is no longer a Danish colony, but part of the Danish rigsfælleskab - a word that is impossible to translate into one English word. It means that the two countries are close, Greenland has home rule, but receives help from Denmark, and the Danish Royal Family still visit Greenland.

The Yanks pulled a similar stunt years ago, demanding a U.S. Air Base at Thule on Greenland, which they got, much to the Greenlanders dismay. However, legally, selling or buying a whole country is a completely different matter, and not very likely to happen.

Davidhs, many Danes are sick and tired of the USA and I very much doubt that Greenland is prepared to sell themselves either.

Davidhs Fri 16-Aug-19 15:55:07

They would ask for a dowry to take it!!!!!!!!!!!
