The end of hopes of stopping a no deal Brexit?
Just announced.
The Queen will be asked by the government to suspend Parliament days after MPs return to work - and a matter of weeks before the Brexit deadline.
The BBC's political editor, Laura Kuenssberg, says it will make way for Boris Johnson's new administration to hold a Queen's Speech - laying out the government's future plans - on 14 October
But it means MPs are unlikely to have time to pass any laws that could stop the prime minister taking the UK out of the EU without a deal on 31 October.
A No 10 source said: "It's time a new government and new PM set out a plan for the country after we leave the EU
The idea of shutting down Parliament - known as prorogation - has caused controversy, with critics saying it would stop MPs being able to play their democratic part in the Brexit process.

They've baan left an appalling legacy, Devorgilla. Unfortunately, they'll never get back any deals as good as we now have. This is the end of the historical UK "Golden Age".

At long last a Remainer parliament will not be able to determine that we STAY in the EU. Good for Boris, good for the Government. It is a shame that it has to come to this to get any forward movement on leaving the EU, a decisin which was approved by the majority of MPs sitting in the HOC.

This has happened because most of those in the UK are sick and tired of a parliament that is working against the national interest.

It is in the interests of this country to move forward. Businesses want it, most Remainers have accepted it will happen and given the EU is firm that we take or leave Theresa May's awful withdrawal agreement - which Parliament rejected three times - we have no choice but to leave and THEN negotiate with the EU on a level playing field.

The UK and our MPs do not want what the EU has offered. That's a fact.

Remainer MPs won't let us leave by blocking or resorting to legal measures to obstruct every step of Brexit, so our government has decided to stop the nonsense, the political game-playing and get us out.

Well done! A positive step in the right direction. How disgraceful that some of our elected MPs have caused this to happen.

People around and about in our small town were delighted that this looks like progress.

I dare say Gina Miller is forking out yet more to lawyers and courts to find a legal loophole. Enemy of the state, I say.

I have more confidence in Boris Johnson's patriotic government than I have had in any government (of any political persuasion) for a very long time.

No more pussyfooting around and caving in to Remainer MPs, thank goodness.

Let us sit back and wait for Remainer fury and every attempt under the sun to prevent it happening....Millions of people are absolutely disgusted by Remainer sour grapes. Thank you Boris.

No, I don't have to say the Conservative Party has been artful.

This isn't chess or some kind of board game. This is about people's lives and futures.

Pure selfishness and ignorance.

A 'once in a lifetime referendum' can only bind those eligible to vote in that referendum whether they chose to or not. This referendum started out as advisory but Cameron, in his limited wisdom, decided to make it binding. You cannot bind people who could not vote at that time. I find it odd that those who accept the referendum result as democratic do not afford the same courtesy to the democratic result of the 2017 election which returned a Parliament made up of MPs who either want to Remain or to leave with a deal.
I must now put my faith in those young voters about to come of age to reverse this disastrous decision as soon as possible.

growstuff Wed 28-Aug-19 16:34:15

People who voted to remain do believe in democracy, Firecracker. Unfortunately, there are some people who don't understand what democracy means.

growstuff Wed 28-Aug-19 16:32:21

Is that straight out of the Leavers' handbook, Urmstongran? Most people realise by now that what you're claiming consists of meaningless soundbites.

Barmeyoldbat Wed 28-Aug-19 16:32:08

Urmsgran for goodness sake get it right, it is NOT the will of the people this mess, just a number of ill judged, ill informed people who believe that the good old days were just that. Just get a grip.

Wonder why ?hmm

Firecracker123 Wed 28-Aug-19 16:25:38

We had the once in a lifetime EU referendum on 23rd June 2016 and Leave won. Obviously remainers don't believe in Democracy.

People are not fooled by Labour they are not trying to stop us leaving without a deal they are trying to stop us leaving fullstop.

Does anyone really believe this has “nothing to do with Brexit” and it’s all about the “domestic agenda”? Or is this another porky pie?

Whitewavemark2 Wed 28-Aug-19 16:13:24

The will for a minority of the people.

Don’t believe it? Then put your money where your mouth is and test it with a referendum inviting people to vote on deal, no deal or revoke.

westendgirl Wed 28-Aug-19 16:08:23

Oh Urmstongran would you try to be accurate at least. It was not the will of the people, but the will of some of the people.

SirChenjin Wed 28-Aug-19 16:07:43

Petition is doing quite well so far. How many votes did Boris get in the leadership elections again?

trisher Wed 28-Aug-19 16:02:42

There's a petition to stop proroguing-

SirChenjin Wed 28-Aug-19 15:54:46

The will of what people Urm? I don't recall a people's vote for prorogation.

Urmstongran Wed 28-Aug-19 15:47:37

Seems Boris understands the will of the people trumps that of the politicians!

I can see why the EU might find the authority of a bunch of self-interested tenuously elected elites being challenged concerning though.

Opposition parties asking for a meeting with the Queen

SirChenjin Wed 28-Aug-19 15:41:36

No, that's a separate issue. Why do you think they needed these extra days at this time?

GrannyGravy13 Wed 28-Aug-19 15:38:48

SirChenjin, no idea they have already had three years!!

SirChenjin Wed 28-Aug-19 15:36:16

Why do you think these extra days were 'needed' at this time Granny?

Whitewavemark2 Wed 28-Aug-19 15:35:50

But also the QS is debated for 5 days that takes more time.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 28-Aug-19 15:23:26

Varian parliament always closes for the "conference season" everyone knows that.

This is about three extra days before the Queens speech. (8/9/10 October)

Corbyn asks to meet Queen over PM's 'smash and grab' plan to suspend parliament

A plan to suspend parliament starting in mid-September is causing furious reaction among those who want to block no-deal Brexit.

Possibly, Urmstongran, but personally I find the word 'contemptuous' more appropriate than 'artful'.
