Who do people vote for?

Remainers will be split between the LibDems and Labour, so neither party will win.

Leavers will be split between the Tories and the Brexit Party, so ditto.

It may be a well and truly Hung Parliament.

Very interesting times indeed.

Of course there is always this fellow.....

MawB Thu 05-Sept-19 12:15:31

Well Jo Johnson has resigned now so even his own family are deserting him.
Surely Boris must see he is stuffed?
And dumping Cummings would be a good start.

Yes - and the Scottish Parliament here for devolved areas. A Citizens Assembly is more of a sort of influencing body which is supposed to represent the broad range of views held by the electorate and which seeks to influence Parliament (which then ignores/accepts as it sees fit).

Fennel Thu 05-Sept-19 11:57:13

Sirchenjin -
" it doesn't have any legislative powers to enact decisions."
So it seems that only Parliament, both Houses, have these legislative powers.

SirChenjin Thu 05-Sept-19 09:27:06

Our Great Leader in Scotland is currently recruiting a Citizens Assembly to discuss what a future Scotland might look like. We're all being invited to apply and it will be "made up of 100 members of the public, the Assembly will be overseen by two independent co-conveners, be able to call on expert witnesses and have its own secretariat. Deliberative sessions will be live streamed and evidence published". There was one convened in N Ireland to look at the issue of abortion.

There are pros and cons and certainly in Scotland there is concern that its remit may be too wide, there's obviously risk of bias and/or extremism, and it doesn't have any legislative powers to enact decisions.

It may be that Johnson will not get his election at all after he failed to get the necessary majority last night anyway.
I have just read this by a Professor Sir John Curtice, a Polling expert

Because Prime Minister Boris Johnson tried and failed to use the Fixed Terms Parliaments Act to call an election on Wednesday, it may not be possible to call an election using the same method again
There is a question mark as to whether or not the government will be allowed to bring the same motion back again on Monday or Tuesday because the convention is you cannot deal with the same issue inside the House of Commons in the same session
The government might be forced to call an election another way, says Sir John, for example by trying to pass a bill which says notwithstanding the Fixed Terms Parliaments Act we're going to have an election on this date. Then the problem is potentially because the government has said we are proroguing Parliament next week will there be time to get such a bill through
What a monumental cock- up.

They are drawn-up rather like a Jury. This may give you some idea but there is a great deal about Citizens Assemblies on the internet Fennel.

LadyGracie Thu 05-Sept-19 09:16:54

I can’t understand why anybody wants to give away our country and pay billions a year for the privilege and have no say in any decisions made!

I thank the Lord I’m not young!

MawB Thu 05-Sept-19 09:12:03

On “Today” earlier this morning.
Nick Robinson “Good morning Chancellor, what first attracted you to a spending spree on the eve of a General Election?”
Glad I am not the only cynical one here
(Ranks along with “What first attracted you to multi millionaire, Debbie McGee?” doesn’t it?) hmmhmm

Fennel Thu 05-Sept-19 08:55:50

What's a citizens Assembly GG3? Are they elected?
Anja I didn't like to add that, but it's such a huge decision we need careful preparation/education.

Anja Wed 04-Sept-19 22:43:31

Fennel followed by an examination before being allowed to Vote!

GracesGranMK3 Wed 04-Sept-19 20:49:52

Citizens Assemblies, Fennel.

mostlyharmless Wed 04-Sept-19 20:40:04

I heard an elderly lady on the radio, say she was voting Leave because she hated Europe as her dad had been killed in Europe in WW1!

Fennel Wed 04-Sept-19 20:23:59

I'm beginning to think that rather than a GE there should be a prolongued period of public education on the subject - compulsory for all voters - followed by a second referendum.
Problem would be, how to avoid bias. Mainly on the facts about the EU and how it operates, how it affects us etc.
The result would only be advisory of course.
Still can't see the point of a GE.

M0nica Wed 04-Sept-19 19:27:44

I am told that after the referendum the most popular search on Google was 'What is Brexit? the story however sounds apocraphil.

I do know I heard vox pop interviews that included someone voting leave because his wife could no longer retire at 60.

Callistemon Wed 04-Sept-19 18:56:18

Day6 Many people who voted in the referendum in 2016 had no idea what to do once they entered the polling booth. So, yes they do need educating. I have friends who have manned polling stations for more than 30 years and they were amazed at the behaviour of some voters. They were rude and aggressive and demanded proof that their ballot papers wouldn't be changed or destroyed.

Dinahmo so many rude and aggressive people could have voted remain with no clear idea what they were voting for.
After all, none of us knows what the future holds in or out of the EU.

Callistemon Wed 04-Sept-19 18:53:18

And before someone says oil is running out....thats lies too

It may not be paddyann but unfortunately we may not need it.

Callistemon Wed 04-Sept-19 18:52:13

Jane10 is not a Scot

Really?

Lessismore Wed 04-Sept-19 09:26:54

crystaltips, a friend of mine was told he would be out of a job ( he is an ESOL teacher) because " they are all going"

Indeed some of "them" are going and some "different ones" will be arriving.

Fennel Wed 04-Sept-19 09:20:38

re a general election - what's the point?
What difference would it make to the current deadlock?
Just something different to try?

varian Wed 04-Sept-19 08:46:25

Appalling disrespect

SirChenjin Wed 04-Sept-19 08:37:44

Exactly - neither did themselves any favours.

Can you imagine the outcry and uproar from the Leavers if JC and Ian Blackford had behaved the way those 2 did?

Anja Wed 04-Sept-19 08:16:02

Exactly WW2 a stuttering, blustering, shambolic mess.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 04-Sept-19 08:14:09

One thing we did learn yesterday is that Johnson is useless at the dispatch box and cannot be remotely trusted, and Mogg is the epitome of arrogance, unpleasant sarcasm, entitlement and disrespect in his words and body language.
