Commons voted 328 to 301 to take control of the agenda, meaning they can bring forward a bill seeking to delay the UK's exit date.

Interesting, grannycool It seems like a good solution. NI, like Scotland, voted to remain -- which backstop would the majority of NI voters support? It might depend on whether they do more trade with Ireland/Europe, or with the rest of the UK...

growstuff Wed 04-Sept-19 12:38:39

Grannycool, Please could you explain how that would work? I must admit I hadn't heard of a NI only backstop, so I'm curious.

growstuff Wed 04-Sept-19 12:37:01

We don't know that Labour doesn't want to leave. We do know that Corbyn has been anti-EU all his life. We also know that the majority of Labour constituencies voted to leave BUT the majority of Labour voters voted to remain, which is why Labour has been sitting on the fence.

Jabberwok Wed 04-Sept-19 12:33:11

shouldn't, not should!

Jabberwok Wed 04-Sept-19 12:32:33

Bercow should be totally non biased, he should be 'playing blinders '
As for the referendum being advisory, that's as may be, so why didn't MP's refuse that advice?!! In signing article 50, they not only agreed the advice, but potentially voted for no deal, so they can hardly complain when faced with what they themselves put into law, why on earth do that in the first place? Perhaps they didn't understand what they were voting for?! If they didn't, how earth do they suppose that we do? and if they think we don't, then why ask in the first place. What complete fools they all are!

Alltyryngirl Wed 04-Sept-19 12:18:08

I'm still backing Boris. He's the only one to get us out of the EU.

Sheilasue Wed 04-Sept-19 12:15:35

Can you not read between the lines, it’s there way of prolonging it we know labour and Lib Dem’s don’t want to leave and any of the other parties. This is there way of trying to remain I am sure of it.
We voted to remain my dh and I but we lost the referendum so we are supposed to be a democracy and we must leave. They are just stalling and stalling.

curlytops Wed 04-Sept-19 12:11:58

So much for the referendum, why won't they do what the people voted for LEAVE!!!angry

SirChenjin Wed 04-Sept-19 11:35:56

This is no longer about the country but people's inflated egos

Never a truer word spoken Buster, you've summed up the new cabinet perfectly.

Rosina Wed 04-Sept-19 11:33:14

They are all playing with out future. Whether you like it or not this country voted to leave the EU. Where is democracy? Who envisaged this travesty over three years later? I despair - and I am giving up watching, listening to or talking about the b****y subject as I can't take any more.

Coco51 Wed 04-Sept-19 11:28:09

Bercow is playing a blinder!

Isn’t he just! It’s worth watching the goings on in Parliament to hear his humour.

Grannycool52 Wed 04-Sept-19 11:27:50

I originally come from the UK but now live in Dublin, so am interested from both the British & EU perspective.
Originally the EU suggested a backstop for NI only but the UK argued that it should apply to the whole UK (to satisfy the DUP & retain the Tory majority)! The EU conceded this.
Now the UK demands the backstop be dropped.
I think the best thing for all of us, NI, R of I & UK, would be to revert to the original plan, backstop for NI only. Then the UK would have it's withdrawal agreement & both Irish economies would be saved.
Do any of you agree?

BusterTank Wed 04-Sept-19 11:24:46

This is no longer about the country but people's inflated egos . Shame on parliament . I think whole lot need throwing out and starting again . Then get people in who want to improve Britain , rather than fight amongst themselves like a load of school kids . Then spitting your dummy out when you don't get your own way . Britain has voted to leave get on with it .

westendgirl Wed 04-Sept-19 11:09:43

Ask Boris Johnson and puppet master Cummings.

wicklowwinnie Wed 04-Sept-19 11:06:47

I was born in a free country and I had hoped to die in a free country, but it's looking less and less likely. What has happened to democracy?

Musicgirl Wed 04-Sept-19 10:37:07

I remember a time not so very long ago when politicians represented the people who voted for them and there were actually some decent, upstanding members of parliament who deserved the right honourable title. Now they are all career politicians who are in it for themselves. It doesn't matter which party they are in, they're all as bad as each other. And as for Boris Trump, well words fail me. What a mess.

BusterTank Wed 04-Sept-19 10:34:01

Just give us what the country voted for even if it means no deal .

allule Wed 04-Sept-19 10:19:55

Travelasfar...we were glued to it all day till the final vote, and expecting the same today!
You need the parliament channel. Freeview 232;
Freesat 201; Sky 504; Virgin 605.
Think it starts at 2.30.
Weirdly compulsive!

Mamar2 Wed 04-Sept-19 10:08:36

What is going on? I don't understand any of it. Hang on tho it might be because I've chosen not to. A load of pillocks IMHO. Makes me so angry! GB is now a laughing stock. ?

maryhoffman37 Wed 04-Sept-19 10:08:33

Bercow is playing a blinder!

icanhandthemback Wed 04-Sept-19 10:06:47

No abuse here, Barmeyoldbat, just deep sadness that our country is in such a state. I don't think anyone has a reason to crow. We are still in a state of flux and I don't think it is going to get any better in the near future.

Pythagorus Wed 04-Sept-19 10:05:29

So it’s an election. I knew it would be and so did the government. I received a form to update those in my household eligible to vote a few days ago. Preparations are underway! What a mess!

Barmeyoldbat Wed 04-Sept-19 08:49:01

Well I watched the debate and I thought that JC speech was excellent on the other hand Boris just mumbled and lied his way through his speech.

Expect to hear a lot of abuse from the leavers now the tables are turned.

SirChenjin Wed 04-Sept-19 08:34:37

Hoorays for the massive, long term uncertainty that will follow a no deal Brexit are OK - for parliamentary democracy, not so much.

lemongrove Wed 04-Sept-19 08:28:46

There are no hoorays for anyone BlueBelle at the moment.
Uncertainty is still the order of the day.
