I just wondered if anyone else noticed this character on the front bench in parliament this evening. He has grown older since his school days, as we would expect, and lost some hair but the inane grin as the camera pans in is still there as are the schoolboy jokes and the bullies idea that silly names make him look clever.

I cheered up when I realised it was actually him, after all you only have to choose to look away and he will no longer exist.

My post was a joke, I’ve only ever known Lemongrove as Lemongrove. Sometimes posters have a good reason to change their user names, perhaps if a family member finds out who they are on Gransnet, or a friend or colleague.
I’ve only ever been maddyone.

Chew and Lem sounds like a sort of bargain basement store.

varian Fri 06-Sept-19 19:22:03

I have always been varian since discovering Gransnet many years ago.

Why do posters change their names lemon?

maddyone Fri 06-Sept-19 19:17:57

Lemongrove, what about Orangegrove, Limegrove, et al? grin

maddyone Fri 06-Sept-19 19:16:25

Gonegirl

‘Bloody ‘ell’

My comment of ‘Oh dear’ was a somewhat more polite version of what you wrote Gonegirl. It meant ‘Oh God, they’re all fighting about Brexit again.’ There was no need for you to be so condescendingly rude.

lemongrove Fri 06-Sept-19 19:15:20

Have you only had one pseudonym Varian? Not that we would know I suppose, anyway.
Being only on my second name I feel rather left behind in those stakes.??

lemongrove Fri 06-Sept-19 19:12:27

How? Good question Mawb but I doubt there will be a good answer.

maddyone Fri 06-Sept-19 19:09:37

Gracesgran,

‘And you know it is coming from a very, very sad person.’

You haven’t the faintest idea what kind of a person I am Gracesgran, but you are making sure by your regular (very regular) comments on Gransnet that the rest of us are getting a very good idea of what kind of a person you are.
I’m not sure that well mannered would be in the description, judging by some of your comments.

MawB Fri 06-Sept-19 19:01:19

How?

varian Fri 06-Sept-19 18:08:01

Threads do wander, as I think you must know lemon as you have been here a while even under your present pseudonym.

However my re-posting from the Economist is directly relevant to the OP

Chewbacca Fri 06-Sept-19 18:05:00

It doesn't happen very often but that post made me howl with laughter! grin

lemongrove Fri 06-Sept-19 17:27:41

Since Varian’s post has zilch to do with this one Less it’s reasonable to think she posted in haste on the wrong thread.
If I was employed by GN to police threads then I would be handing you a caution for continually following me around and asking daft questions.wink

Lessismore Fri 06-Sept-19 16:45:31

Are you employed by GN lemon? Do you police the threads?

grin

lemongrove Fri 06-Sept-19 16:17:12

You’re on the wrong thread again Varian....this one is comparing somebody from a front bench to Billy Bunter.?
Even though Bunter was short, very fat and wore glasses.
‘I say you chaps’ squeeked the fat owl of the remove, ‘Order, I say....orderrrrr’.
Or he may have said ‘ I say you chaps, any chance of a bit of tuck until my postal order arrives!’
Or any amount of other things.

According to the right-wing "Economist"-

"Boris Johnson has been Conservative leader for little more than a month, and until this week had appeared in Parliament as prime minister only once. But that did not stop him carrying out the biggest purge in the party’s history on September 3rd. After a backbench rebellion led to a resounding defeat of his uncompromising Brexit policy, 21 moderate Conservative mps, including seven former cabinet members and a grandson of Winston Churchill, had the whip withdrawn and were told they would not be allowed to stand as Tories at the next election.

It was the most dramatic step in a long process: the transformation of Britain’s ruling party from conservatives into radical populists (see article). The capture of the Tories by fanatics determined to pursue a no-deal Brexit has caused the party to abandon the principles by which it has governed Britain for most of the past century. With an election looming, and the Labour opposition captured by an equally radical hard-left, the Tories’ sinister metamorphosis is terrible news."

Public schools like to keep the plebs in a permanent state of ignorance by having different year groups for Remove.

Elegran Fri 06-Sept-19 14:34:37

Probably, Anno, because some disgruntled poster would accuse you of "quoting from the net so as to pretend to be clever", as they did to me when I passed on something I had found and added where I had found it (though what they objected to was "quoting from Google",)

annodomini Thu 05-Sept-19 22:31:07

Now why didn't I consult wiki before posting?

Lisagran Thu 05-Sept-19 22:14:08

annodomini Thu 05-Sept-19 21:56:20

To get the facts right, Billy Bunter was 'the owl of the Remove' at Greyfriars School. Not entirely sure what 'the Remove' was in a public school, but it sounds like some kind of form for those not quite up to the required standard! Maybe this didn't exist at Eton.

Gonegirl Thu 05-Sept-19 21:08:01

Do you two want to take it outside?

Sussexborn Thu 05-Sept-19 21:07:57

Definition of unctuous. 1 : having, revealing, or marked by a smug, ingratiating, and false earnestness or spirituality. 2a : fatty, oily. b : smooth and greasy in texture or appearance.

Well I’ve learned (or should that be learnt?) something new today. Sure someone will enlighten me.

I actually had a doctor say that to me when I asked if my baby’s head had engaged! He actually put the word pretty in the middle and I reported him to the senior partner!

Gonegirl Thu 05-Sept-19 21:07:26

bloody 'ell! hmm

MawB Thu 05-Sept-19 21:04:17

I realise that - but my first question?
Could you possibly have condescended to answer that?
Or were you just too keen to make a smart arse comment which fell flat on its face because you frankly did not know what you were talking about?
