Business Secretary Andrea Leadsom confirms for the first time that the Conservative Party will defy convention and put up a candidate against him in the next Election.

They lie and lie and lie

Sir Edward Leigh has announced he will be standing for the post of Speaker.

Gove should be on the stage - his faux righteous indignation is most amusing

Whitewavemark2 Mon 09-Sept-19 19:01:46

Am watching it varian

Please turn on the BBC Parliament channel now.

This is a truly historic last ditch defense of our democrcy.

SirChenjin Mon 09-Sept-19 18:57:33

I know - I just wondered if he might be tempted by this role

M0nica Mon 09-Sept-19 18:45:04

He's standing down at the election. He announced that some time ago. He is about 80.

SirChenjin Mon 09-Sept-19 18:31:04

Ken Clarke for Speaker?

GracesGranMK3 Mon 09-Sept-19 18:30:52

Bercow has been heartily disliked for years by them and they will just be glad that he’s going.

That must be why they spoke in his praise for more than an hour and a half Lemon.

Parliament as a whole always chooses the speaker, from whichever party is in power at the time.

You will see I put down what I believed to be true; that the speaker came alternately from each of the two largest parties. This did happen between 1965 and 1992. It also happened - until 1992 - that the speakers were from the government at the time but apparently there is no reason to see either of these as a convention.

They now seem to be elected from among many more candidates than in the past.

Grandad1943 Mon 09-Sept-19 18:01:25

Had he not lost his seat I believe Ed Balls would have made a great Speaker and much in Bercows image

But, wishful thinking.

GracesGranMK3 Mon 09-Sept-19 17:55:07

It should be remembered that Bercow has said before he was standing down and then changed his mind - so let's wait and see.

It should be remembered he has been re-elected three times.

GracesGranMK3 Mon 09-Sept-19 17:52:11

He seems fragile, lost self-control

Really? I thought he was very happy to be able to give a real dressing down to one of the entitled ones on the Conservative benches.

I think they spoke for an hour and a half in praise of his tenure. Not bad considering there were unlikely to be any Government speakers amongst them. The poor little flowers are only happy if they can lie and threaten to break the law it seems. That is the perception the younger generation is growing up with while their view of a speaker is someone who stands up for the house against the executive when need be.

Let's just hope we get someone of his strength to replace him.

Grandad1943 Mon 09-Sept-19 17:41:18

I believe that when the history of this whole Brexit crisis is written many authors will write Bercow down as a great speaker and parliamentarian who played a large and positive role in the situation.

Fennel Mon 09-Sept-19 17:21:21

I've been listening to BBC Parliament for the last hour or so - he will be much missed, whatever his critics say.
I've always admired him as a Speaker, apart from anything else he knows how to speak.
He must be ready for a rest.

suziewoozie Mon 09-Sept-19 17:18:50

JB was elected Speaker under a new system. Labour was in power when he was elected. It’s quite a complex system and I think DC/BJ will mind because they hoped to be in power after the next election and to change Speakers. If he’d come back as an MP, it would have been difficult, although not impossible, to get rid of him as Speaker. In the current situation, the Govt will not have the same power as to who will be elected.

It will be someone from the Labour party as speaker this time I think.

Whitewavemark2 Quote [Brilliant! The Tories look like slapped asses.] End Quote.

Whitewavemark2, the Tories in the House of Commons have always got faces akin to "slapped asses" these days.

Of course, there are now at least four different Tory Parties in parliament at present, the ERG group, the centre-right, the centre-left and those that have been democratically thrown out of the party by Dominic Cummings. ?

ReadyMeals Mon 09-Sept-19 16:50:30

If it was Theresa May still PM while all this was going on I'd feel safer. Johnson really scares me I feel as if we're on our way to, not exactly a dictatorship. but to a much less democratic government setup. Also if they do finally leave on her deal's terms I think they should jolly well offer her the leadership back. I think her votes only failed because of a load of undercover tactics by that man's cronies.

lemongrove Mon 09-Sept-19 16:43:39

I don’t think Johnson ( or Cummings) will care, or any of the
Cabinet ( or on the back benches.)
Bercow has been heartily disliked for years by them and they will just be glad that he’s going.
Parliament as a whole always chooses the speaker, from whichever party is in power at the time.

MawB Mon 09-Sept-19 16:36:58

I hoped that has put a spoke in the obnoxious Leadsom woman’s wheel.

suziewoozie Mon 09-Sept-19 16:30:51

He’s played a blinder ( as usual) - the next Speaker to be elected by this Parliament and not as the Government thought, after the next election. I wonder if Dominic saw that one coming?
