Miller for PM

It could mean that the Labour Party Conference will have to be brought to an end early as their executive will have to return to parliament, and the Tory Party will lose their Conference completely.

Very expensive to cancel. ??

Terrific idea Wwmk2!

Whitewavemark2 Tue 24-Sept-19 11:15:37

Be an interesting time in parliament

Carid Tue 24-Sept-19 11:15:53

This should not have happened...all the talk of democracy is ridiculous....I fear completely for this country now.... truth, honesty and respect have completely flow out of the window.

M0nica Tue 24-Sept-19 11:17:26

What is significant is not just the ruling but the unanimity of the judges. It has profound constitutional significance.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 24-Sept-19 11:19:01

Gives me so much hope for our poor democracy

mcem Tue 24-Sept-19 11:21:09

Carid I'd have to say that the decision has to some extent restored faith in truth, honesty and respect.
Virtues that BJ and his cohorts undermined!

Urmstongran Tue 24-Sept-19 11:21:54

I agree MOnica

I had hoped for a different judgement. But this is the law of the land and I think the unanimity of the decision is one of the most important aspects of the judgement.

At a time where everything has been 52-48 and parliament split over indicative votes etc. it's good to have clarity, certainty and consensus.

travelsafar Tue 24-Sept-19 11:23:25

What on earth is happening to our once great country. Boris has really done it now, lying to our Queen. Even if he was led by others he should have checked out such an important decision personally and not relied on others who let's face are all looking after themselves in one way or another. Feel so sad we have come to this. What must the rest of the world think of us.sad

Whitewavemark2 Tue 24-Sept-19 11:24:25

The biggest constitutional change is the recognition and strength it gives to parliament to scrutinise government.

Urmstongran Tue 24-Sept-19 11:24:34

And the statement "It is for parliament, and in particular the Speaker and the Lord Speaker to decide what to do next" strengthens democracy as much as "Parliament has not been prorogued” really.

grannyqueenie Tue 24-Sept-19 11:25:28

My word, I really wasn’t expecting that! Not only am I delighted with the judgement but very impressed that it was communicated so clearly and succinctly making there no doubt about its meaning or intent. Interesting times indeed!

M0nica Tue 24-Sept-19 11:27:19

In his Reith lectures this year Jonathon Sumption, formerly a justice of the Supreme Court talked about how democracy can remove a citizens right and effectively become a dictatorship.

This judgement has just made that much more difficult.

absthame Tue 24-Sept-19 11:27:20

The first action of the MPs must be to once again take control of the time table and force through a law to have parliament sit for the next 40 or so weeks and then force through a new referendum bill.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 24-Sept-19 11:29:21

We need a government of unity under say the father of the house.

Anniebach Tue 24-Sept-19 11:33:56

Father of the house is Ken Clarke

mcem Tue 24-Sept-19 11:35:34

Well said ug grannyqueenie and Wwmk2.
Now there's a post I didn't expect to write!

Whitewavemark2 Tue 24-Sept-19 11:39:00

?

oldgimmer1 Tue 24-Sept-19 11:39:42

Ken Clarke...now that's a thought.

Eurosceptic too.

Queenie's not coming out of this smelling of roses either.

Anyhoo..great result.

absthame Tue 24-Sept-19 11:41:04

I agree a government of unity is required and to facilitate the Tories joining in numbers, Ken Clarke as PM with the the mother of the the house as deputy.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 24-Sept-19 11:44:51

Exactly.

GracesGranMK3 Tue 24-Sept-19 11:45:32

I think that jumps ahead Whitewave. This is so big I think all MPs need to think very carefully

I agree Urmstongran

Elegran Tue 24-Sept-19 11:45:39

Leavers' twitterboxes predictably tweeting a lot of nonsense about "biased judges" (what? ALL of them? and did they listen to what Lady Hale actually SAID?)

Whitewavemark2 Tue 24-Sept-19 11:46:38

I still have butterflies - it was an absolutely incredible result.

Parliament will feel its new muscles and should take control from a minority government
