Climate Change Demonstrations

Millions of people, mostly young people all over the world, demonstrated their concern for climate change which is threatening our planet and their futures.

I am proud that one of my children and one of my grandchildren were amongst the protestors.

She doesn't drive, she never flies, she only wears 2nd hand clothes, she eats vegetarian, local, organic."

We've all been here before of course, haven't we?

I remember decades ago when we were all allegedly 'doooomed'.

Yes the climate may be changing as it has for thousands of years. We have had periods of both warming and cooling, and we may well now be in a warming phase, BUT will any human activity halt or reverse that?

Yes of course we should all play our part in being less wasteful, and the campaign against plastic for instance, is long overdue, but let's not kid ourselves that we can make a jot of difference if solar activity is causing the Earth to warm.

Oh dear

GrannyGravy13 Mon 23-Sept-19 13:48:24

Solar activity is decreasing according to some scientists.

I bet they're all loving the collapse of Thomas Cook (except for those who have booked holidays with them of course). I wouldn't expect anyone would be so hypocritical to work for them would they?

UN conference underway.

Wonder what nugget of idiocy our PM will spout?

Whitewavemark2 Mon 23-Sept-19 15:41:17

Greta Thunberg giving them hell!!

humptydumpty Mon 23-Sept-19 16:35:48

What's that all about, Gilly? I don't think anyone is suggesting we should never go on holiday?

Gonegirl Mon 23-Sept-19 16:39:56

she is such a brave youngster

Can anyone really doubt her sincerity?

GrannyGravy13 Mon 23-Sept-19 16:45:47

I do not for one minute doubt she is sincere in what she says.

I still prefer to get my information from scientists who specialise in climate conditions and solar activity.

merlotgran Mon 23-Sept-19 16:47:18

I don't really see how anyone can have stolen her childhood though, or am I missing something?

Gonegirl Mon 23-Sept-19 16:47:24

Yes. Do put up some links.

At least five.

merlotgran Mon 23-Sept-19 16:47:40

Happy to be corrected.

Gonegirl Mon 23-Sept-19 16:49:57

My post there was to GrannyGravy.

I actually think she is having a spectacular "teenage years". Don't know what her childhood was like.

...it was mentioned earlier that the anti-Vietnam War demos had no impact...that's not true. It was certainly part of the reason Harold Wilson kept the UK out of the Vietnam war. I'd call that a result, myself.

gillybob Mon 23-Sept-19 17:08:20

Their constant condemnation of air flights is a bit of a giveaway though humptydumpty or are some people allowed to offset ? All very confusing I’m not sure they even know what they want . In the real world that is .

GrannyGravy13 Mon 23-Sept-19 17:10:36

Gonegirl May I respectfully request you use your sear engine. Put in Solar Activity 2019 and there are many articles/reports including one from NASA.

GrannyGravy13 Mon 23-Sept-19 17:19:03

*search not sear

Just because Greta Thunberg is sincere doesn't make her right.

I heard a speech she did yesterday. She said that nobody was doing anything about global warming. What?, all those windfarms, more efficient domestic appliances, increases in insulation in new houses and retrofit in old.

I am not saying we are doing enough, but to say no one had done anything is just plain silly. I would have thought that even a 16 year old should no better.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 23-Sept-19 18:50:00

Thunberg is looking at something far bigger than wind farms etc monica . Laudable as they are it isn’t what will save this planet. I would have thought you would be aware of that.

She was addressing Nations, not individuals.

Gonegirl Mon 23-Sept-19 19:40:15

Greta wants no more fossil fuels to be used. Wind farms, solar energy, nuclear, are all important.

Looking back on the thread, merlot asked what would be done with land that isn't suitable for arable farming. Maybe
solar farms? Not so pretty as conventional farmland of course, but maybe needs must?

Gonegirl Mon 23-Sept-19 19:41:33

We need more clean electricity to run electric cars, which would make a huge difference.

Baggs Mon 23-Sept-19 19:47:06

I happened to hear a few moments of a Thunberg rant on my way back from Edinburgh today. I have to admit my first thought was "God! she must be fun to live with!... not".

gillybob Mon 23-Sept-19 19:52:44

And where will this extra massive amount of electricity come from? Biomass being shipped in from Canada perhaps ?

I would love to ask what it is she wants and how she thinks it can be achieved ( in the real world that is) . I get the uncomfortable impression that she is being used .

Gonegirl Mon 23-Sept-19 19:56:33

The plan, I think, is to make it as per my previous post.
