The website set up to help holiday makers is actually really professional, informative and easy to use. Most people will be able to travel back home free of charge with only a few hours difference to their original return flight time.

But what’s the plan for the 9000 workers who won't get paid next Monday?

Universal Credit?

Uber driver or Deliveroo?

EllanVannin Mon 23-Sept-19 15:31:16

Whereas those of us who can afford holidays can at some point make alternate arrangements whereas those who find themselves unemployed have little or no choice depending on their financial abilities.

EllanVannin Mon 23-Sept-19 15:28:10

I'm perfectly alright thankyou, growstuff. Just happen to be on the side of the thousands who'll be out of a job if that's alright with you.

growstuff Mon 23-Sept-19 15:24:14

This thread is becoming surreal.

gillybob I hope your grandchildren get over it in time. I'm sure they will, but everything seems so much worse when you're only little and looking forward to something. Maybe when the money does eventually get refunded, they can all splash out on a huge treat.

Leaving the thread now because it's gone mad.

Brexit? Oh get real! Some posters will throw this old chestnut into any conversation. Thomas Cook was failing long before brexit was ‘conceived’ !

growstuff Mon 23-Sept-19 15:02:23

EllanVannin Are feeling OK? Your last two posts don't seem to make much sense.

EthelJ Mon 23-Sept-19 14:49:39

easybe it really is not brexit nonsense it is fact. Thomas Cook mentioned it, its not the only factor but it is a contributory factor.

I have just listened to an interview on the TV.
The gentleman was placing the blame on TC’s cumbersome and expensive running costs. Too many high street premises. He explained that other ‘lighter’ firms were a problem for TC’s outdated business practices and were taking holiday makers away from the more traditional companies.
He also said, on a hopeful note, that quite a lot of the poor employees would find that their skills are very transferable and many would find work with the newer companies.

I hope so.

Doodle Mon 23-Sept-19 14:28:39

jane10 and gillybob so sorry for your families disappointment.
I am also sorry about those made redundant their worries are worse but that doesn’t mean others aren’t affected.

I would have had a ball complaining here about the loss of a £2,000 business class seat to a passenger who was either ill or dead ! Yes, I had to forfeit my seat. The inconvenience of it !!

growstuff Mon 23-Sept-19 14:00:22

Pardon?

growstuff Mon 23-Sept-19 13:59:08

Yearoff I hope she wasn't advised to claim JSA. She'll almost certainly have to claim Universal Credit, but she should claim immediately. It will probably be some weeks before she receives anything. If she has rent or a mortgage and other bills to pay, it might be an idea to pay a visit to the Citizens' Advice Bureau.

EllanVannin Mon 23-Sept-19 13:58:34

-------pardon me for being logical ( rolls eyes ) Holiday or loss of job !

growstuff Mon 23-Sept-19 13:55:05

Ahem! Excuse me! I've never blamed Brexit for TC's demise. If you look on the first page of this thread, I even pointed out that TC has been in trouble for years (long before the referendum).

growstuff Mon 23-Sept-19 13:53:31

petra There are a number of sources saying exactly the same thing. I just picked that one at random. The FT article is more detailed but behind a paywall.

Yearoff Mon 23-Sept-19 13:51:26

My eldest daughter has been cabin crew for 13 years with TC. Since she was 20. It’s so incredibly sad. They have been advised to claim job seekers allowance immediately. Who knows about their wages for this month that they have worked for. I’ve shed a tear for all her colleagues today.

Whitewave, this is NOT about Brexit. As well as weak trading, the company's big problem in 2011 was too much debt - about £2bn when the pension deficit was included - way before Brexit. Large bonuses paid to top bosses, despite long term fears that the company would collapse, didn't help. It is said that everybody will fly home on the day they should, though maybe not to the airport they flew from. I feel sorry for all those people whose holidays have been cancelled and, especially, sorry for those who have lost their jobs.

Willow3 Mon 23-Sept-19 13:41:35

This takes me back to 1974 when I worked as cabin crew for Courtline when their travel arm Clarksons went into liquidation. I lost my job overnight but helped in the rescue working for Laker and Dan Air for the next 6 weeks. Their was no ATOl then and not much help for passengers or staff. I eventually got a job with British Airways so all was well. I feel so sorry for all involved with Thomas Cook.

Chipski Mon 23-Sept-19 13:41:16

eazybee - I completely agree with you. I checked the salaries and bonuses of Thomas Cook's executives and it made eyewatering reading. They've borrowed money to buy more aircraft and the interest on the loans is over £1bn. Bad management in my opinion. As we haven't left the EU yet I fail to see how it can be blamed on Brexit. However, some people will blame anything and everything on the vote to leave.

petra Mon 23-Sept-19 13:38:24

growtuff
So is this a Daily Mail article that we should believe?
The only reason I ask is because we are constantly being told that the DM only prints lies.

jura2 Mon 23-Sept-19 13:35:25

Hedge Fund managers are making a killing on this - using the 'disaster economics' they are massive fans of. Disgusting sad

jura2 Mon 23-Sept-19 13:31:07

Of course ERG, Johnson and co want to red rid of all that EU ^Red Tape. You know, like EU package Travel Directive, 2015/2232/EU - that will ensure all passengers will be properla refunded and safely repatriated.

Will anyone say 'ah well, not Brexit related'?

jura2 Mon 23-Sept-19 13:27:24

Management issue too - but denying that rising costs combined with great to massive (depending on region) devaluation of £ is not a big factor, is just silly.

Jane10 Mon 23-Sept-19 13:21:34

I agree gillybob. My DD and family are in the same position. It'll be months before they get refunded and, like many others, can't just conjure up the money to try to rebook now.
Jobs, hopes and dreams gone. Management issue.

growstuff Mon 23-Sept-19 13:20:26

Ah well! Some people are happy …
