So, it has been made clear now, that health provisions for the 100s of 1000s of UK citizens, mainly retirees, in the EU- will be covered for 6 months only. Then stop - in case of No Deal.

So many, and that means 1000s - will have no choice but to come back, without being able to sell their home abroad, having spent all their savings on the project. Where will they be housed- which GP practices will be able to absorb them back - how will they be funded?

Just waiting for someone to say it is NOT Brexit related ...

^ But living in Europe full time was their choice.^

I expect you've told them that and cheered them up no end, Ug.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 23-Sept-19 21:09:11

maizie council accommodation!? Imagine the backlash from the waiting list

Ellianne Mon 23-Sept-19 21:08:07

Surely if you choose to go and live in Spain or France then you factor in the cost of private health insurance for treatment in that country. I'm not sure how retirees abroad can expect the benefits of both systems.

MaizieD Mon 23-Sept-19 21:07:13

But they won't get many pounds for their euros when they come back to the UK Ug

MaizieD Mon 23-Sept-19 21:04:56

There are around 247,000 British citizens aged 65 and over living in other EU countries

Know all of them, do you, Joelsnan?

'An address' doesn't necessarily have a 'home' attached to it.

Jura is pointing out that they may not have homes to return to and won't beable to afford to buy or rent.

I wonder if they could get council accommodation or if they'd be deemed to have made themselves homeless... and thus not be eligible...

Urmstongran Mon 23-Sept-19 21:04:53

Actually jura I’ve just re read your OP.

without being able to sell their home abroad

Why would they not be able to sell up (if they wanted to)? An estate agent I know out in Spain said property prices are just about back to what they were in 2009 as lots of Scandi’s with good pensions, are buying properties for winter living and the marker is buoyant!

Urmstongran Mon 23-Sept-19 20:59:42

I haven’t seen this in the news yet jura I’ve been out all day, so I don’t know enough to comment.

I can see many ‘ex pats’ will be worried. But living in Europe full time was their choice. I do realise the referendum upset the status quo.

Perhaps we won’t leave on No Deal and something will get sorted out? The Costas in Spain rely heavily on pensioners spending their money - they’d hate a mass exodus! That said, wealthier pensioners will be able to ride the storm.

I know of one couple out there. Early 70’s. They retired to the Costa del Sol 23y ago.

He developed Type 2 diabetes 10y ago. They have an S1 certificate. All his medication, blood testing stuff, swabs etc are free at present. He said in the event of No Deal Brexit it will cost him €30 a week. He isn’t happy about it but won’t return - just cut his cloth accordingly he said.

Joelsnan Mon 23-Sept-19 20:56:21

Most I know of retain a UK address and return to UK for treatment anyway.

trisher Mon 23-Sept-19 20:42:02

quizqueen I don't know when you last visited an A&E department. They collect all a patients details and they charge non-residents for treatment.

petra Mon 23-Sept-19 20:40:23

i do hope they won't be tanned or dark skinned
I would imagine that there's a good probability that they will be tanned, coming back from Spain, Portugal, Italy, South of France, Greece.

jura2 Mon 23-Sept-19 20:35:29

you try and do this when you are over 60 and with pre-existing conditions sad

quizqueen Mon 23-Sept-19 20:33:34

I expect that the UK will continue to allow anyone who rocks up on our shores to get free treatment by our NHS, so if the same doesn't apply to our citizens who live in Europe then the blame should go to the EU. I'm not a supporter of the EU but they certainly have more sense in this respect. People living abroad will have to take out private health care policies.

grapefruitpip Mon 23-Sept-19 20:27:08

I do hope they won't be tanned or dark skinned.

jura2 Mon 23-Sept-19 20:26:05

petra, the point being that many returning will be destitute and unable to buy or rent.

Pantglas2 Mon 23-Sept-19 20:13:29

It is what drove so many to vote leave..... according to the remainers.

petra Mon 23-Sept-19 20:12:17

There shouldn't be a problem as to where they are going to live and registering with a GP.
You told us that all the eu nationals will be leaving. As there are more eu nationals in the uk than there are expats in Europe where's the problem?
In 2016 net migration was 336,000. I assume that all these people were housed and registered with a GP.

grapefruitpip Mon 23-Sept-19 20:12:14

Some people complained about immigrants.

grapefruitpip Mon 23-Sept-19 20:10:08

What on earth has non EU migrants coming to the UK got to do with Brexit?

Unless of course, you believe the Farage poster and so on?

growstuff Mon 23-Sept-19 20:08:12

Well, that was a useful contribution.

Pantglas2 Mon 23-Sept-19 20:07:15

People complained about immigrants.
Politicians blamed EU tying their hands.
People complained about EU.
Politicians promised a referendum and abide by result.
People voted leave
Politicians fail to make Brexit work
Expats return to UK to find people moaning about how much it’s all going to cost, who’s going to fund it, what about surgeries, schools etc.

In my opinion, you’re absolutely right jura2, it is all about Brexit.

growstuff Mon 23-Sept-19 20:05:41

Anyway, what does this have to do with the OP? Seriously?

growstuff Mon 23-Sept-19 20:05:14

I also think it's wrong to say everybody who voted to remain thinks everybody who voted to leave is racist. It's almost certainly true that all racists voted to leave but not vice versa.

growstuff Mon 23-Sept-19 20:03:24

Is there a plot or have I really and truly lost it?

What on earth do migrants from non-EU countries have to do with returning emigrants?

LondonGranny Mon 23-Sept-19 20:02:21

I think it's wrong to say everyone who voted Leave is racist. I know people who voted Leave because they believed it would be better for the NHS, however, it's probably true that all racists voted Leave.

I still haven't forgiven Farage for saying Leave won without a shot being fired days after Jo Cox was shot dead in the street by a Britain First terrorist.

British state pensioners living abroad in the EU who fall sick after a no-deal Brexit will have their healthcare paid for by the UK as a last resort for only up to six months, the UK has announced. Campaigners have called it “a massive let-down”.

The statement – which comes along with clarifications relating to Ehics used in France by holidaymakers, second home owners and newcomers to France – adds a new layer of complexity to an already complicated situation when it comes to OAPs’ healthcare after a no-deal. British Ehics are also currently used by expatriate UK state pensioners on trips to other EU countries apart from the UK.

Campaigners from British in Europe (BiE) said it shows once again that the citizens' rights part of the Brexit deal should be ring-fenced, safeguarding the existing healthcare rights for life.

In a no-deal the current EU S1 health form system, whereby expatriate state pensioners have their healthcare in the EU paid for by the country that pays their pension, would end for holders of British S1s. This would leave people in different situations depending on national healthcare systems and no-deal laws in the countries where they live.
