The slippery slope - dictatorship anyone?

We have a Prime Minister who suspends Parliament for 5 weeks at a time of national crisis in order to allow him to pursue a minority policy, and who then forcefully declares that the 11 Justices of the Supreme Court, the highest legal authority in the country, are wrong.

My Concise Oxford Dictionary defines a dictator as a ruler with (often usurped) unrestricted authority. It defines usurp as seize or assume (a throne or power etc.) wrongfully.

I feel that we have crossed a line on to a very slippery slope.
Do supporters of Johnson not feel just a teeny bit worried?

No there isn't - I will go to my annual appointment with Vision Express when I am in the UK soon ;)

Joelsnan, I have written Fairy Stories - but never about Farage and Toni Robinson- or Johnson, for sure. Will have to have a go at Horror stories.

Urmstongran Thu 26-Sept-19 20:41:57

THANK you jura. You are forgiven. I’m assuming there’s no ‘Specsavers’ in Switzerland?
??

Joelsnan Thu 26-Sept-19 20:33:07

jura2
Have you thought of writing?
Your fairy stories are fantastic.

Sadly, it is often best to make things a bit clearer when commenting. There are 1000s out there calling for civil disobedience and violence - on Far Right sites, but also just comments on FB and Twitter- and in the street. And they are beign 'whipped up' by Farage, Yaxley-Lemon aka Toni Robinson, the EDL and BF- and even Johnson now.

jura2 Thu 26-Sept-19 20:26:35

oh I see- there were at least 5 posts in between, and no indication that you were responding to that specific comment.

So, I will apologise, and I am very glad that this is what you meant.

I normally like to keep an eye on what's happening politically so switched on last night to see how the first day back was going. I couldn't believe the sights and sounds and just had to switch off. I soon realised this morning that I was far from alone in being horrified. What a mess.

Urmstongran Thu 26-Sept-19 20:12:16

Gosh jura!!

Here it was:

Bluddy hell! I meant at the ballot box❗️
Jeez. You’re quick to cast aspersions ladies. You ought to know my views better than that by now.
☹️

jura2 Thu 26-Sept-19 20:10:26

I am sorry to say I can't find your explanation about 'the people will do it'

maizie I’m waiting as well.

I suspect the truth is that silly has accepted something she has read without giving it any critical thought.

My initial thought would have been

“ how can that be, given that the Supreme Court is a U.K. domestic institution and sovereign”

And that is what I continue to think unless I’m told differently.

So I would need definite evidence to accept that assertion

Urmstongran Thu 26-Sept-19 20:00:27

I did jura already. Straight after you and Labaik maligned my character. Go check.

Hattiehelga Thu 26-Sept-19 19:55:21

If the vote had been respected there would not be a Brexit party or certainly not one with the following it now has.

MaizieD Thu 26-Sept-19 19:52:01

You do realise that members of the Supreme Court are in receipt of £175k annual stipend from the EU.

The internet search engine I use must be a filthy Remainer too, because I can't find any evidence to back up that assertion. Perhaps sillyoldfool would like to provide a link to an authoritative source

Chaitriona Thu 26-Sept-19 19:51:21

I was shocked when an MP said in Parliament that death threats had been made against her child. What have we come to? A YouGOV poll today has shown that 75% of British people think the language used in Parliament does matter. A large majority of both leave and remain voters think the tone in Parliament is too aggressive. A majority of both leave and remain voters and a majority of voters for the Conservative, the Labour and the Liberal Democratic parties think the Prime Minister has a responsibility to create a safe environment for MPs and their families.

jura2 Thu 26-Sept-19 19:51:01

Urmstongran, I will apologise if you are prepared to explain your comment... 'If Westminster doesn’t sort itself out the public will.' and it doesn't mean what I guessed it meant.

Amagran Thu 26-Sept-19 19:44:29

Thank you to all, whatever your political persuasion, who have contributed to this thread and made this a very lively discussion. It is good to have our views examined and subject to reasoned debate. Better that someone has an opposing view to our own than no view at all.

I did not intend it to be a Leave v. Remain debate.

I think that the preservation of our democratic processes and standards and our respect for the law and legal judgments, transcend Brexit. In or out of the EU, but especially out of the EU, individually and collectively, we are nothing if we do not respect due Parliamentary process and the law and courts.

Day6 Thu 26-Sept-19 19:44:15

You do realise that members of the Supreme Court are in receipt of £175k annual stipend from the EU.

I read that too Sillyoldfool

The judges are all Remainers on their lovely EU gravy train and happy to ally with Brussels. hmm

Urmstongran Thu 26-Sept-19 19:44:14

That comment of yours was in the post (about me - to Labaik) where you prefaced that remark by saying I think we know what she means Labaik- threats of street and other violence.

Please apologise jura

Whitewavemark2 Thu 26-Sept-19 19:43:30

I’ve just re- read your post silly and sorry I didn’t read it correctly the first time.

Can you provide evidence if your assertion please

GracesGranMK3 Thu 26-Sept-19 19:43:19

Sillyoldfool Thu 26-Sep-19 19:38:00 You do realise that members of the Supreme Court are in receipt of £175k annual stipend from the EU.

and ...? They are also lawyers at the top of their profession and well able to judge a case on the evidence regardless on any view they may or may not hold.

Johnson did not make a statement about why he prorogued for such a long period of time. Not a single member of his staff made a statement. The Queen's speech usually gets four to five days. What conclusion would you expect the 11 most senior judges in the country to reach?

Day6 Thu 26-Sept-19 19:42:00

Elegran, I deplore that behaviour too. All decent people do.

It's not and never has been ok. You are choosing to use my post out of context too. I have mentioned the disgraceful behaviour of those on the far right and the far left.

They are not typical of passionately disposed and partisan people, fortunately. Most abhor their violent and yobbish behaviour.

Can we agree on that?

Urmstongran Thu 26-Sept-19 19:41:17

jura you said just now The thought that we are talking here, to people who would approve this - is sickening in the extreme.

jura2 Thu 26-Sept-19 19:39:38

Never wrote 'people like that'

if you are prepared to denounce and condemn Johnson's behaviour and words in the House for last 2 days, I'd be delighted. Will you?

Whitewavemark2 Thu 26-Sept-19 19:38:54

silly and your point?

GracesGranMK3 Thu 26-Sept-19 19:38:24

To match the huge surge of Far Left anarchy, maybe? (Thu 26-Sep-19 19:19:30)

I know you wish that was the case but "the left" in this country has moved, or as a right-winger would put it "surged" no further to the left than, for example, Finland. Since when did we see Finland as a far-left anarchy? As for anarchy itself - that would be far from my worries about any socialist party.

Where do you get your politics from Day 6? Not that I can't guess.
