33 days to go .... What’s the Brexit plan?

Something’s afoot!

The SNP’s embrace – with a public show of reluctance – for the idea of sending Jeremy Corbyn into Downing Street shows the mounting tetchiness among Remainers that somehow Boris will be able to get around the Benn Act, and thereby leave the UK hurtling towards a no deal by the end of next month unless they take action.

What are your thoughts on what’s going on?

Remember May having to whizz back to the U.K. at the DUPs behest?

Poetic justice? I have no regard for May, but I can appreciate that she must be chuckling this morning after the shabby way Johnson treated her.

Hey - let's hear it for the legal profession. We need independent legal people even more than ever given the pickle we're in.
Tell you what though, much as I dislike Mr Johnson and would prefer a different person as our PM, we can thank our lucky stars we don't have Mr Trump in charge. The man gets worse with every day. Sorry - that's off piste I know.

Well well,

The DUP has turned down the deal, so of course will the ERG.

As was said at the beginning of the week the chances of a deal are practically zero.

Seems like the tail is wagging the dog again with the DUP calling the shots.

crystaltipps Thu 17-Oct-19 07:03:04

It’s pretty depressing and embarrassing here too.

I sometimes need to visit you all in here and educate myself on the goings-on across the Atlantic when the news in the US becomes even more depressing and embarrassing than usual. sad

The link works if you delete everything after "16". The article is then available mid left on the page.

Hi, I clicked on the link but it's a 404 error message -

This latest deal is more dangerous than the last one

I knew what you referred to. But it was nice of you to clarify and explain to those who might not.

Quiet anyway on this thread this evening. TV must be good!

MaizieD Wed 16-Oct-19 23:15:06

It's 'hoist with your own petard', a petard being a bomb, and means that you've blown yourself up with your own bomb.

I wasn't referring to Ug when I used the old saying, I was referring to the reported new 'conditions' of the currently being negotiated Withdrawal Agreement.

Hope that clarifies. grin

Urmstongran Wed 16-Oct-19 23:04:54

I think it’s ‘hoist’ though.

Urmstongran Wed 16-Oct-19 23:04:19

Yes, I agree it is pretty ironic.

That said - what’s that saying .... “it ain’t over till the fat lady sings”?

jura2 Wed 16-Oct-19 21:39:20

Maizie- thanks for link- it helps with the context.

What do you think about this 'hoisting own petard' Urmstongran? Ironic, hey.

Urmstongran Wed 16-Oct-19 21:30:39

Sorry.
?
Your good opinion means a lot to me.

GracesGranMK3 Wed 16-Oct-19 20:50:02

Is it possible for the legal profession to sink any lower?

Is it possible to stop this language. Although this government seems to be becoming ever more authoritarian which, UG could as easily work against you at some point as with you, everyone is allowed to turn to law if the see the need and also use their freedom to fight for what they believe in any democratic and legal way they choose. This language, which suggests only one view can be fought for through our democratic system, harks back to the bad days of the 1930s. I thought more of you than that UG.

Ooh ?
It’s time to get the popcorn (again).

Why? is some entertainment on offer?

Urmstongran Wed 16-Oct-19 20:35:18

Actually, maybe if Parliament is happy to pass the new treaty it will repeal the law Maugham is relying on!

Urmstongran Wed 16-Oct-19 20:12:26

MaizieD Wed 16-Oct-19 20:05:35

Jo Maugham is launching his legal action because:

We believe the Government's proposed Withdrawal Agreement is contrary to section 55 of the Taxation (Cross-border Trade) Act 2018 legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2018/22/section/55/enacted"

twitter.com/JolyonMaugham/status/1184530270478913538

Interestingly, Section 55 was the result of an amendment tabled by the ERG

Hoist, petard? hmm

It would be embarrassing if the government did something illegal, wouldn't it?

Urmstongran Wed 16-Oct-19 19:33:54

“Jo Maugham QC has announced plans to launch a legal action in an attempt to ban the Government from putting the Withdrawal Agreement before Parliament."

Is it possible for the legal profession to sink any lower?

GracesGranMK3 Wed 16-Oct-19 19:30:55

Government sources saying there will not be a deal tonight.

humptydumpty Wed 16-Oct-19 18:58:18

varian did you see Ian Hislop's documentary last week on fake news? He made the point that we are all most inclined to believe news that suits our viewpoint.

varian Wed 16-Oct-19 18:53:35

Truth can only take you so far in politics -New research shows that we are happy to be put straight on fake news but the facts have little effect on the way we vote

www.thetimes.co.uk/article/truth-can-only-take-you-so-far-in-politics-nck8nbrxj

Tory peer Daniel Finkelstein confirms what we have long suspected - that a large proportion of the UK electorate are not interested in facts. I suppose I shouldn't be shocked or surprised, but, as someone who has always respected factual information, I do find the findings of this study quite depressing.

Urmstongran Wed 16-Oct-19 15:43:36

I’ll stop now. You can tell I’m a it bored this afternoon!
?
The sun is shining here in Oldham. I think I’ll go for a short walk.
