33 days to go .... What’s the Brexit plan?

Something’s afoot!

The SNP’s embrace – with a public show of reluctance – for the idea of sending Jeremy Corbyn into Downing Street shows the mounting tetchiness among Remainers that somehow Boris will be able to get around the Benn Act, and thereby leave the UK hurtling towards a no deal by the end of next month unless they take action.

What are your thoughts on what’s going on?

Good grief! Even Brexit isn't terminal!

Urmstongran Fri 04-Oct-19 15:35:30

I am seriously confused as:

Steve Baker MP
@SteveBakerHW
A source confirms all this means is that Government will obey the law.

It does not mean we will extend.

It does not mean we will stay in the EU beyond Oct 31.

We will leave.

You're not the only one who is confused. It wouldn't surprise me if Steve Baker is confused too.

As a I understand it, the government is saying it won't break the law by ignoring the Benn Act, but it's suggesting it's found some kind of loophole.

The massive irony, is that they now say EU Law Trumps UK Law- and that therefore the Benn Act is over-ridden by EU Law. You just could not make it up sad

jura2 Fri 04-Oct-19 17:00:55

According to a staunch Brexiter living in a Tax Haven

'I am sure XXX will confirm that EU law overrides UK law.

Once we can agree on that, the Benn Act can not over rule Art 50.

Article 50 says that we will leave the EU at the end of negotiation period either with a negotiated withdrawal agreement or without.

The Benn act however, seeks to remove the ‘without’ from the table, which then makes it in contravention and at odds with what Article 50 and EU law states.

Clearly BJ knows this which is why he says he will abide by the law. '

hmmmmmmm

Urmstongran Fri 04-Oct-19 17:29:54

Thanks for sharing that jura2 (as a Remainer, you didn’t have to. ?)

If that’s it then it DOES make sense! Boris will be complying with the (superior) law.

Maybe.

MaizieD Fri 04-Oct-19 17:38:04

Doesn't A50 say something to the effect that we leave 'according to the constitutional arrangements of the member state which wishes to leave'? As observance of the Rule of Law is part of our constitution then breaking our law would be contrary to our constitutional arrangements.

I can't see the ECJ having anything to do with or constitutional arrangements. I doubt if that one is a runner...

Johnson has told the courts that he will send the letter requesting an extension on 19 th October.

I assume he wouldn’t lie to the courts? Perjury is a serious offence and carries a prison sentence.

So we can assume that everything else he has said has been a lie.

That’s the UKs Prime Minister folks

Great isn’t it?

jura2 Fri 04-Oct-19 18:04:09

Urmstongran - oh don't worry, those who need to know, know full well what he is up to- they don't need me, for sure. But oh the hypocrisy and irony, and worse sad

And of course they know that Maizie is right too.

Urmstongran Fri 04-Oct-19 18:25:41

Wonder what the letter will say?

It looks as though Johnson’s whistle-stop tour of European capitals next week will be whistling in the wind. Forget the bombastic rhetoric from Number 10. They’re cornered, outmanoeuvred and are about to get mullered.

Urmstongran Fri 04-Oct-19 18:30:45

Oh dear. It’s not looking good for Boris is it? And yet he seems so cheery .... and confident!

Summat’s up!

And so we reach end of another momentous week in which a lot happened and nothing changed. Johnson’s deal was just more unicorn-hunting. His promise both to seek & block extension just more Orwellian doublespeak.

The sound you hear from Number 10 is that of panic and defeat.

Johnson may think himself world king, Cummings may think himself a genius, but they’re two individuals who’ve lost parliament, lost a legal case & lost control.

There won’t be a deal to vote on by 19th Oct. We’re not leaving on 31st.

Now stop worrying and have a fab weekend

Excl: Boris Johnson made a big-money offer to Ireland in a bid to seal an 11th hour Brexit deal, but it was rejected

jura2 Fri 04-Oct-19 20:10:07

'Summat’s up!'

ah it is heartening to know on of us is in Boris's confidence. Watch your thighs and more Ursmston...

lemongrove Fri 04-Oct-19 20:11:57

What happens though, if he sends the letter one day, then writes another cancelling it the following day??

Whitewavemark2 Fri 04-Oct-19 20:18:11

He will find out soon if he will be charged with a criminal act for not complying with the law if he follows that line.

You invaded us.
You conquered us.
You divided us.

You robbed us

our heritage, our land.

You starved us.
You starved us.
You starved us.

You shot us.
You imprisoned us.
You killed us.

We made peace.
We trusted you.
I trusted you.

Urmstongran The phrasing of the letter for an extension is stipulated within the Benn/Surrender act, because nobody trusted Johnson to construct a letter as parliament wanted.
