Boris getting tough with EU

For once the Leavers are out in force but still spouting the same misinformation.

Don't understand how they can admire Johnson so much, despite the lies and fraudulent misuse of money whilst he was Mayor of London. £56,000,000 for a feasibility study into a garden bridge across the Thames. Can anybody explain that cost? Also Boris buses which he was sure could be sold elsewhere - no takers and (whilst Foreign Secretary) the purchase of 2 water cannons (illegal in the UK) which he tried to sell on and have now been scrapped.

I agree with new nanny, I do believe Boris is trying to do his best to get a deal but the EU realise he is hamstrung by a divided parliament which has left him In a poor negotiationing position. They know that he is now unlikely to be able to leave with a no deal as parliament will not allow this.
For me , the more worrying thought is, that despite the majority vote, of those that did vote, was to leave 3years ago ,parliament are close to setting a precedent that if they don’t like the result of any further referendum they can they can do the same again to prevent it happening.
What is the point of any further delay We have had 3 years to sort this out?Are we doomed to endlessly revisiting these negotiations, or do we say ok you win , and remain?
What ever happens now there are going to be some very angry voters .

I don't think that accusing those of holding opposing views of being extremists or promulgating propaganda contributes anything useful to what could and should be robust but respectful debate.

Newnanny, a Conservative majority Parliament made that spurious promise. The Conservatives are now not in the majority in Parliament. The Conservatives do not have a mandate to take us out of the EU without a deal.

No, Jabberwok - it is illegal now to leave the EU without a deal. Parliament passed a law to that effect. It is known as the Benn Act. Its legality has nothing whatever to do with the EU.

newnanny actually I believe MPs are elected to do what they believe is right for their country. I hope if there was a referendum which voted to bring back hanging, that MPs would not blindly follow their constuents' opinions..

@Amagran the MP's were elected because they promised to uphold the will if the people. They then went on to abuse their position by blocking the very thing they were elected to deliver. In all polls I have seen recently the Conservatives on 38%, who are saying we must come out are about 15 points ahead of any other party who either want to remain or revoke. The Brexit Party also wanting to leave with no deal are showing as up to 12% depending on polls so where does the 66% of the country wanting no deal. Last poll I saw specifically asking would you agree to leave with no deal 49% said yes and some said don't know meaning less than half said no.

It states quite clearly under article 50 that we are perfectly entitled to leave the EU after two years with or without a deal! In doing so, we are not committing a criminal act though some people behave as if we are. Scotland Wales and NI are perfectly entitled to leave the UK if that's what they wish without hindrance or procrastination from anyone else! We are entitled to do the same from the EU!

Humpty Dumpty, that's so true. We all believe reports or news that concurs with our beliefs and the rest is rubbish. Our grandchildren will not be thanking us in the decades to come.

As for Johnson's current threats and rants about the EU, I can only say that he is the most unstatesmanlike, most undignified and most dissembling politician I can ever remember our having in this country. And yes, there have been some bad 'uns before him.

Two things are puzzling me:

1. Why are we still talking about a no-deal Brexit, and in some quarters, saying it is now inevitable, when it is actually illegal?

2. If the 'will of the people' is more important than considered, informed, debated decision making by elected members, which is the fundamental premise of our Parliamentary democracy, then why is the will of the two thirds of the country who now apparently do not want a no-deal Brexit, being ignored?

The EU have been patiently negotiating with the UK for the last three years. It has been blatantly obvious for months that the UK government was doing its best to not negotiate and go for No Deal (which will benefit all the ERG group, it's what they want) and then blame the EU.

The EU has made it clear what the stopping points are - particularly the Backstop and why, other than to support the UK's age old and careless attitude towards the Irish Republic, should the EU compromise further.

I think the stronger the Government is now the greater their majority will be at the next election.

Ah well, what's the saying? - there's none so blind as those that will not see. I think everyone on this thread, myself included, is prey to what Ian Hislop said on his documentary about Fake News last night: everyone's first instinct is to believe news that concurs with their own opinion.
