WAGatha Christie!

It was Coleen’s good old-fashioned detective work that led to the breakthrough, which she announced on Instagram.

Although, to be quite honest, when I read the mother-of-four’s opening – “This has been a burden in my life for a few years now…” – I thought she was talking about Wayne!

For once, she wasn’t. Coleen was, in fact, referring to the elaborate Hetty Wainthropp-style sting operation she set up to discover the mole in her social media circle who was leaking personal stories and private posts to The Sun.

Channelling both Scott and Bailey, her shrewd approach was to block everyone from viewing her Instagram stories, apart from one account.

Over the following five months, she set up a very modern canary trap: she trickle-fed her Instagram with false stories both banal (her alleged return to TV) and bizarre (a trip to a gender selection clinic in Mexico).

They all made one particular red-top tabloid, as did the most recent, untrue snippet that the basement in her new home was flooded.

Finally, she saved and screen-shotted all the original stories as proof, before the Big Reveal. The only account that had access to her fake news belonged to (da da daaaa!) Rebekah Vardy. Cliffhanger pause. And cue the closing credits.

Note: Coleen didn’t phone her first. Or text her.

She just did the full exposé on Insta (nobody says the “gram” any more) and stood back to see what happened.

An online sensation that went viral faster than Spanish flu, that’s what happened. Coleen cleverly didn’t name Rebekah, merely citing her account as the source of the leaks.

But as girl code shattered into a million tiny pieces, Rebekah responded with denials and swift outrage.

I don't think that Colleen stays with the d*ckhead that she is married to for money but because she has 4 sons and realises that they need a dad.

Riverwalk, I wonder if it was news on Radio 4 ( and 5) because the other news is so depressing, repetitive and leaves us feeling hopeless and as though we have no influence

We all know we've no influence over WagathaChristie or Rebekah Vardy, it isn't a life and death situation like the one going on in Turkey/Syria and so on so we can just relax and have a bit of a laugh.
Sorry to any WAGS hurt by this idea

It’s not nice to imagine a friend flogging your intimacies to the highest bidder

I was laughing at intimacies - apparently one of the stories was about a flooded basement grin

I've no idea who RV is but do know of Colleen - what I genuinely can't understand is why this is such big news? Obviously all over the tabloids but also the broadsheets, BBC news, even The Today programme!

It's not like it's a slow news day these past 24 hours - there's so much going on.

It wasn't a murder plot or sex - what am I missing? hmm

BlueBelle - I long to be as pure as you are on the WagathaChristie front, honest I do. I blame the young women who cut and sorted my hair as this news broke. They were watching on their iPhones and messaging their friends, I got caught up in the excitement. I confess, some of my adult children, ok my daughters were part of this awful iPhone communication.
I realise I'm a Bad Mother.
BlueBelle, I say all this tongue in cheek, I'm not being snarky with you, I enjoy your posts x

BlueBelle Fri 11-Oct-19 16:32:18

Goodness me who cares? I hadn’t a clue what this thread was about very cryptic until I got half way down and saw names can’t say I care a fig in the world for either I d probably not recognise either if they were standing next to me and couldn’t care less what they get up too I haven’t even read it so no idea what they re losing their wigs over
I thought it wa# about old Aggie the author ???

Calendargirl Fri 11-Oct-19 16:26:12

Not at all bothered what either of them get up to. I recognise Coleen Rooney if I see her picture, but no idea what Rebecca Vardy looks like, and no desire to.

EllanVannin Fri 11-Oct-19 16:15:19

I don't like Vardy for starters. I haven't a clue what it's about but no way can I imagine that Coleen is a spiteful person, the other one, yes.

I watched RV on 'I'm a Celebrity ...' and thought she came across as very manipulative, thoroughly dislikeable and frankly a bully. It wouldn't surprise me if she had leaked the stories to the press. I don't think either of them come out of it smelling of roses but I am team Colleen.

Of course I've only glanced at the stories in passing grin because I only read the broadsheets for important daily news!

Iam64 Fri 11-Oct-19 13:41:32

Oh kittylester, I don't believe it's the wags job to control their men and in any event, don't believe its possible.
Jamie is a different man than Wayne.
JV and RV came together as adults, both already had children and failed relationships behind them. I expect that like many such relationships there was a lot of negotiating and agreements before they commited
Wayne and Colleen have been together since they were 16 and have 4 children together. They're involved in each others families, reflecting the traditional Irish Catholic/Lancashire working class approach to family.
Not that I'm taking sides, or taken this seriously of course.

Oopsminty Fri 11-Oct-19 13:39:31

Colleen all the way for me. Rebekah has been causing upset for years. This Vardy bloke's family didn't go to their wedding. I think she upsets people.

Just like you, kittylester, I haven't paid any attention to this either!

kittylester Fri 11-Oct-19 13:37:05

I have a sneaking admiration for Rebekah (?) as she seems to be able to 'control' Jamie and, from what I've heard from people who have met him, he is a likeable chap.

Colleen seems to be unable to control the silly Wayne and appears to be just hanging on for the money. He seems to be totally unprincipled!

Not that I take any notice of any of it, you understand!! blush

Iam64 Fri 11-Oct-19 13:33:35

DannieRae- I understand you feeling Colleen could have handled this in a better way. My feeling is she didn't want to and realised she was likely to come out of this with more sympathy than RV and also get lots of publicity.

DanniRae Fri 11-Oct-19 13:30:27

I'm on team Coleen - but I think she could have handled the situation in a better way.

lovebeigecardigans1955 Fri 11-Oct-19 13:28:40

It seems to be indicative of modern life, doesn't it? Instead of having a private face to face conversation it goes online for all to see.
RV may be publicly distressed at this humiliation but I expect that CR was annoyed at the betrayal. As my dear old mum used to say, 'two wrongs don't make a right.'
Neither of them come out of this very well.

lilypollen Fri 11-Oct-19 13:26:48

These are 'celebrities' who inhabit a different world to us mere mortals. They exist on publicity in their gilded lives so don't feel too sorry for them.

Iam64 Fri 11-Oct-19 13:25:16

I know its shallow of me but - I've found it all a bit of light relief from the real drama going on in our world. I'm sure Rebekah Vardy is tough enough to survive this and Colleen had better watch out. Wagwars

Urmstongran Fri 11-Oct-19 13:21:16

Does any of this matter? No. Yes. Maybe.

It’s not nice to imagine a friend flogging your intimacies to the highest bidder. But it’s not nice to think of a seven-month-pregnant woman weeping and distressed at such a public humiliation.

It could have been sorted out, quietly, in another way. The charitable part of me kinda wishes it had been. But the prurient part of me is enjoying the action too much to turn away.
