I agree, ineedamum, and if you are desperate you are likely to do desperate things. Also, I guess most of them were young and gullible and had been made to believe that the venture would be successful.

It is all so tragic.

ineedamum Sat 26-Oct-19 16:12:34

They must have been desperate to pay a huge amount to smugglers and step inside the lorry. I can't begin to image being in that position.

Gonegirl Sat 26-Oct-19 16:09:31

I thought it was exceedingly bitchy (Nonnie's post)

grapefruitpip Sat 26-Oct-19 16:08:13

Thanks, Nonnie. Very kind of you.

Callistemon Sat 26-Oct-19 15:48:07

I think that keeping the thread on track is the best idea, otherwise it becomes all about another poster instead of the topic.

petra good idea if the driver is unsuspecting and migrants have sneaked in.
However, this sounds as if people smuggling was the main aim of this and of other journeys.

Nonnie Sat 26-Oct-19 15:44:36

petra Sat 26-Oct-19 14:30:54 I agree, also the one who said that all such lorries should be capable of being opened from the inside.

Grapefruit I can see that you feel very hurt and I think that may have something to do with you being fairly new? Many of us have become used to that poster and know that very few take any notice or, if they do, they respond appropriately. Have you thought about the sort of person who chooses to be nasty? I can't imagine how unhappy someone has to be to want to hurt others. I rarely respond, just feel sorry for them and move on.

Davidhs Sat 26-Oct-19 15:39:29

The very first reports were that the truck entered at Holyhead, commenting on that I thought the driver was not involved, he would never have travelled to Essex if he knew he had passengers.
The driver would know what he was supposed to be carrying and he would know if it was an empty trailer, he would feel the weight difference when driving. Removing the seals is not something a driver would normally do, nor would he stop on an industrial estate 5 miles from the port. I’m not surprised the police are holding him, he has a lot of explaining to do.

With a driver cooperating it is not difficult to get into the UK, I have driven to France many times with a caravan and could easily have had a stowaway but I’ve never been checked

grapefruitpip Sat 26-Oct-19 15:29:25

I can assure you lemon , in absolute honesty, I am not stirring anything.

I am genuinely very upset that this has turned out like this.

The sad, sad event is out of our comprehension.

I feel like things have slipped so badly that common decency and respect has vanished.

This is the real me speaking from the heart.
Those poor people.

craftyone Sat 26-Oct-19 15:13:09

It was part of a convoy. 60 people got through. We need stronger borders so that people can be safe.

lemongrove Sat 26-Oct-19 15:09:35

grapefruitpip stop stirring things! This thread is about the
Poor people dying in a sealed lorry, not for you to keep on about another poster. If HQ think anything has breached guidelines then they would have acted on it.

MawB Sat 26-Oct-19 14:53:53

Being censored now Gonegirl ?
#seeificare

petra Sat 26-Oct-19 14:30:54

A chap on Any Answers has just one up with a brilliant idea.
A carbon monoxide detector in every lorry that is linked to the drivers phone through an App.
He can check through his phone if there's anyone in the trailer unit.
It's not rocket science, is it? After all you can switch your central on from the other side of the world.

growstuff Sat 26-Oct-19 14:22:29

petra That's what I meant. It would be impossible to check vehicles at every border even if the customs union didn't exist. Apparently, only about 1% of containers are X rayed at British ports, so the budget for Border Force would need to be increased 100 fold. The UK has the advantage of being an island. Mainland Europe countries don't, so even if every single little lane had a border post, people would still be able to slip through forests, etc. It's just inconceivable. Tighter border control just isn't the answer.

Gonegirl Sat 26-Oct-19 14:14:10

Well, MawB isn't exactly helping. She won't let it lie. hmm

grapefruitpip Sat 26-Oct-19 13:14:41

I have reported the vile attitude and put downs of G to HQ.

Quite clearly they prefer to keep her sweet and not challenge anything.

I am embarrassed to have to mention this in this setting.

Please somebody from with the GN organisation have the guts to say this high handed attitude, bullying and nastiness simply must stop.

Why not read previous posts before typing...eh? Just above your comments I have written that the driver exited his vehicle to retrieve paperwork which was in a folder inside the cab door
From what I read today and saw on the TV news last night, plus the benefit of Grandad’s knowledge, it would appear now that this was not the case - perhaps too ready acceptance of what is reported in the media is to blame?

MawB Sat 26-Oct-19 10:14:24

Not everyone plays by the rules and of all people, I'd expect him to know that
^Something of a backhanded compliment?
I for one welcome Grandad's knowledge and experience in this area.

Nonnie Sat 26-Oct-19 10:07:07

It appears that they may have been travelling for a very long time, China for false passports, Russia.......... etc. The trailer seems to have stopped in 3 different places before crossing the channel. I can't imagine what it all must have been like for them. I also hear that whole villages contribute to fund just one young person to join these journeys.

How anyone can use this thread for anything other than sympathy or trying to understand what happened is beyond me.

Callistemon Sat 26-Oct-19 10:05:24

Grandad from what you posted about the driver breaking the seal before reaching a loading dock, it would appear that he knew full well what (who) should be in the lorry and expected to open it and let the migrants out.
Finding the bodies must have shocked him but it does not sound as if he was a total innocent in the trafficking.

Nonnie Sat 26-Oct-19 09:59:41

Gabby "some people's being offended at every turn" that's you isn't it Gabby followed by "Certain posters should heed their own advice." please do Gabby

Nonnie Sat 26-Oct-19 09:51:40

GabriellaG54 Fri 25-Oct-19 19:21:46 Please forgive me HQ didn't notify me of your promotion to thread controller. I apologise profusely. I'm also deeply sorry that I cannot find any such reference before my posts but didn't look very hard because I don't think you are worth it. A little advice, if you are referring to what we have said on a long thread it would be helpful to either copy as I have done of copy the text you are policing. Thank you

EllanVannin Sat 26-Oct-19 09:39:24

Where my D works dogs are no longer used in security checks.
If cadaver dogs were used at ports I'm sure they would save any more disasters such as this. If a trained dog can smell through concrete or at least 10 feet below ground then they can detect a body through a sealed refrigerated vehicle.

petra Sat 26-Oct-19 09:23:22

growstuff
It can't be done now. Once 'we' come through the border in Romania into Hungary, that's it. No more stops until Calais or Dunkirk.
All those borders would have to be built again. And then there's the huge hold up.

growstuff Sat 26-Oct-19 09:20:56

These people were almost certainly already dead or dying by the time they reached British shores, so increased border controls wouldn't have saved them.

BlueBelle Sat 26-Oct-19 09:17:35

jenniferecckes maybe travel to Calais with a humanitarian. group and see how safe these poor folk are you really are closed aren’t you
My friend is going next week maybe I can send you some photos you are really in cloud cuckoo land if you think refugees are safe in France they are hated and treated like dirt they like it when they escape to Uk and I am someone who loves Europe but I have my eyes open to its shortcomings you obviously haven’t
