I 've just been reading about Louise Casey and I wonder how one in promoted to Tzar?

I think you just have to be high profile in your field and know the right people...

But 'Tzars' aren't always a success, are they?

I think Tsars (or even Czars) are a sort of honorary appointment and for a limited time, aren't they? As Maizie says, I imagine you have to be an expert in your field. Is there a salary involved or does the Tsar take on the job as recognition of her/his eminence only? I don't know, but when I'm asked to be one (must be any time now) I shall certainly find out and let you know. grin

In London, there's a "Czar" for what is called the night time economy (I think it's such a ridiculous description, akin to other trendy but misleading descriptions like the "gig" economy).

The idea is to have, on Fridays and Saturdays, all the tubes running all night. How long before some bright spark suggests 7 days a week instead? At the moment, about four tube networks do this but I think more will be added. So presumably shops, cafes, clubs, casinos, bars, pubs, restaurants, etc., will also be more likely to remain open all night.

I'm not sure I want a Czar for this project. I don't think a 24-hour culture is a natural or a good thing. I realise that some people have to work nights because of the nature of their work, but I don't think it's something to aspire to for everyone - and will be particularly disruptive and unhealthy for people employed in those sectors.

Sorry, I've gone off the point. It's just the word so annoys me!

I think it is a silly title too. Remember when an “Ombudsman” was the person in charge of everything?
Words, emperor’s new clothes.

I would not even try. Remember what happened to the Romanovs.
???

It is just a silly word to describe the head of a QUANGO, whose purpose is high profile and 'woke'. You get drug czars and knife crime czars and what have you, but no czars for elder care or elder-abuse.

It is just a silly word for the director of an ineffectual body, whose only purpose is to make politicians look as if they are taking seriously some issue in the public eye.

Cynical?, Me?

NotTooOld Mon 04-Nov-19 14:43:35

MOnica - what is 'woke'? I've been wondering for a while now what on earth it means. Is it the same as 'aware'?

grapefruitpip Mon 04-Nov-19 15:05:12

I think it's like trendy/ left leaning/heart on your sleeve type of behaviour maybe?

Up on injustice.

As understand it it means someone who is awake on all sensitive pc subjects and is always finding new ones to be 'woke' about. For example the recent Oxford University student vote to ban clapping and replace it with 'jazz hands', in case anyone in the audience might find the loud noise clapping makes causes them distress.

Jazz hands by the way are the hand movements the Black and White Minstrels made when singing jolly black American songs and hymns.

If anyone can think of anything more overtly racist than that, the only thing missing is an insistence that all taking part where white gloves so that performers can measure everybody's delight in their performance by being able to see all the white gloves in the audience waving wildly.

M0nica Mon 04-Nov-19 17:11:28

The 'overtly racist' refers to the jazz hands movement
, not the decision of the students.

What a very odd use of the word Tsar.

When you think about it none of Russia's tsars were particularly successful rulers and none of the last three had any idea what was going on outside the court!
