Disgraceful non-attendance by Corbyn. No excuses - there are none.

Have any other gransnetters seen that iconic photograph of Her Majesty the Queen at the cenotaph. She has her eyes closed and a single tear on her cheek. It brought a huge lump to my throat. I have tremendous respect for her, but not all the royals! Find it if you can and see what you think.

Blondiescot Mon 11-Nov-19 19:07:46

Oh for heaven's sake, Opal - "But I can post what I want WHEN I want. If you don't like it, then don't read it, and don't reply to it." Of course you can post what you want when you want - but you clearly posted it looking for a reaction, so don't get all offended when you didn't get the reaction you were looking for. People are just as equally entitled to post an opposing view...

Nobody knows what is in somebody's heart.

You have hit the nail on the head Jaycee5

Jaycee5 Mon 11-Nov-19 12:14:26

No one is saying there is anything g wrong with marking it. There is something wrong with demanding that everyone does and that they do it in a particular way.

Labaik Mon 11-Nov-19 12:11:08

I think the difference is Corbyn regards the flooding as a disaster [because it is to people that have been affected] whereas Johnson says it 'isn't a disaster'. I'm not an admirer of Corbyn in general but I'm sick of the witch hunt against him....

Calendargirl Mon 11-Nov-19 10:34:18

In fairness Pantglas2 the Queen IS the Patron of the RBL, so is more duty bound to attend I suppose, even at 93.

Pantglas2 Mon 11-Nov-19 10:26:53

If it’s good enough for the Queen to turn out at her age ......

NotSpaghetti Mon 11-Nov-19 09:40:12

Sorry, I’m confused- I saw footage of him at the cenotaph? Isn’t that where the “real” respect is shown?
Why does he need to be at the Festival?

Dyffryn Mon 11-Nov-19 09:31:31

A lot of the political threads are like this one @grannyactivist. I have to admit I sometimes get sucked in and have to reply. My mum always said, if you cannot say anything nice don’t say it at all.

GrannyGravy13 Mon 11-Nov-19 08:54:38

The British Legion work in countries across the world.

They also work with many different Charities worldwide.

Unfortunately I missed the Festival of Remembrance this year as we are in Kenya but I was extremely lucky to attend the BATUK (British Army Training Unit Kenya) Service of Remembrance yesterday, and there was multiple mentions of civilians who have lost and are still losing their lives due to war.

There is absolutely nothing wrong in honouring the brave young men who went to war and did not come home, it is a mark of our respect and long may it continue poppy

GracesGranMK3 Mon 11-Nov-19 08:42:34

Nope, the OP, was all the thing that have been said Opal. That is unless you have muddled the concert the evening before with the parade and laying of wreaths at the Cenotaph the next day and, in addition you put attending a concert higher than making sure people who lives are currently being destroyed by floods are getting all the need.

I would say the OP is in line with everything we have learned to expect from Vote Leave and the ERG (previously known as the Conservatives) - lies and obfuscation.

Jaycee5 Mon 11-Nov-19 08:35:59

grannyactivist It is. What a thing to politicise.

suziewoozie Mon 11-Nov-19 07:33:16

I’m afraid grannyactivist there’s a lot of competition for that recently.

grannyactivist Mon 11-Nov-19 01:30:47

This is one of the most distasteful threads I have ever seen on Gransnet.

oldagetraveller Sun 10-Nov-19 23:31:08

First time poster here. Can't believe what l am reading on this thread. Why on earth is this subject being politicised? Please let's just show some respect for those who died for us, and hope that it never happens again

Opal Sun 10-Nov-19 23:24:10

Not unreasonable, not spiteful, not allegations, just stating fact. And yes, in my opinion, he should have been there. Happy to be called out on anything, and also happy to reserve the right to respond.

Jaycee5 Sun 10-Nov-19 23:03:16

You decide what he should have done and then make it a moral crime that he didn't do it.
He was with veterans in his constituency. He was not disrespecting the event.
Of course you can post what you want and anyone on this forum can reply to it in whichever way they choose within the guidelines.
You cannot expect to write something so unreasonable and spiteful just because you don't like a politician or political party and expect not to be called out on it.
Policies are what matter not spiteful allegations created out of nothing.

Opal Sun 10-Nov-19 22:58:18

No the OP is NOT blatant propaganda - he didn't attend a national remembrance event, and he should have done. If Johnson had failed to attend, the LP fans on here would have gone ballistic.
And to those of you who have criticised me for starting this thread today, when would have been a better time to point out Corbyn's misdemeanour - next week, next month? Then I would have been criticised for bringing up "old news" by the Tory haters. I have observed today's remembrance just like the rest of you, as I do each year. But I can post what I want WHEN I want. If you don't like it, then don't read it, and don't reply to it.

grapefruitpip Sun 10-Nov-19 19:02:55

Ah ,merlot, you have trumped my feeble effort. Yes, a strong contender.

Anniebach Sun 10-Nov-19 19:01:54

Nooooo merlot, enough is enough with the dramatics of the election promises , we don’t need an announcement announcing there will not be an announcement ?

Jaycee5 Sun 10-Nov-19 19:00:14

He was at the Cenotaph to lay a wreath. He stayed behind to speak to the veterans whilst Johnson went off to a VIP dinner.
Then Corbyn went to his own constituency and spent time with veterans there and read a poem. Unlike Johnson he did not lay his wreath upside down.
The OP is blatant propoganda.

growstuff Sun 10-Nov-19 18:59:23

What a relief for you and your family Blondiescot. You're right. Some families aren't so fortunate. I was thinking of them.

Blondiescot Sun 10-Nov-19 18:56:59

Really? On today of all days - hardly the time for political point-scoring. Political leaders' attendance or non-attendance at such events certainly wasn't at the forefront of my mind at our local Remembrance Service today. I was there in gratitude for the fact that my son returned home to us safe and sound from his tours of Afghanistan and Iraq, and thinking of all those families who were not so fortunate...

My money's on 'Is Meghan pregnant?' grin
