Lying for votes. No costing from ERG Tories but lies about not yet released Labour manifesto.

It seems we no longer have such a scandal as history once reported on buying votes. We now have lying for votes. How can we stop this level of, what amounts to, lying propaganda.

What is being said by this new ERG Tory party, that has ousted the once believable One Nation Tories, has been shown to be the worst type of lie. The sort that expects us to be stupid enough to believe obvious untruths.

We have more fact checking on programmes but interviewers are still not stopping the out pouring of untruths from these far right Tories. It was the Election Spending Laws that had the major effect on the buying of votes. What could be done to stop downright lies being repeated and repeated?

But it gets so boring, rather like that Police song which keeps repeating 'message in a bottle, message in a bottle....' about a thousand times.

Amagran Wed 13-Nov-19 18:44:41

I know Chestnut, I just can't help it! Every time I open my mouth (so to speak), the truths just keep pouring out! grin

Time the leavers started to listen then

Chestnut Wed 13-Nov-19 18:31:10

It's like Groundhog Day reading these boards. Remainers seem unable to stop themselves posting the same thing over and over again.

Amagran Wed 13-Nov-19 18:31:07

Quite so, Greta.

We elect and pay our politicians to make political judgments on our behalf. That is why we should never have had a referendum - leaving or remaining in the EU was a matter for Parliament to decide. Having had a referendum, we should remember that it was advisory, not binding. The promise to uphold the result was made by a PM who cleared off the day after the referendum.

Anyway, several posters upthread have said that it is ok for politicians to lie, it is even in their DNA. Why then do these same posters get upset that some people think it is ok to have a second referendum or even just revoke Article 50?

Amagran Wed 13-Nov-19 18:21:29

There is a strong whiff of hypocrisy about saying how idealistic and gullible they (youngest voters) are, and will believe the lies. Easy prey.

There are posters on here who are quite happy to accept the results of a referendum premised on lies and which has been shown in the law courts to have been conducted illegally. Now who's gullible?

Greta Wed 13-Nov-19 18:17:00

Chestnut, are you referring to the booklet ”Why the Government believes that voting to remain in the European Union is the best decision for the UK.”? This was a HM Government publication.

The Electoral Commission also published a booklet ”The 2016 EU Referendum Voting Guide”. One full page describes the advantages of remaining in the EU as seen by 'strongerin.co.uk'. One full page describes the advantages of leaving as seen by 'Vote Leave'.

Of course I’ll respect you in the morning....... love that comment Pantsglas !!

Pantglas2 Wed 13-Nov-19 18:09:40

They all lie in the run up to a general election as well. Corbyn promising free university places and then back tracking by saying it was an aspiration!

Clegg saying fees would be @bolished and then it wasn’t affordable! The tories promising whatever and then the books don’t balance so it can’t happen!

Of course I’ll respect you in the morning.......

varian Wed 13-Nov-19 18:01:12

It was won illegally by lies

varian Wed 13-Nov-19 18:00:33

We should not ‘respect the referendum’: it was won illegally by Tory PM

The fraudulent referendum in 2016 was won by lies, cheating hand foreign interference. That is why nobody should ever say "I respect the result of the referendum"

The fact is that good people were deceived. They were persuaded to believe lies. But since then, in spite of the unrelenting efforts of the right wing press, most UK citizens have realised we would all be worse off if brexit is not stopped.

Just look at the evidence of opinion polls over the last two and a half years.

Urmstongran - that is why Labour target the youngest voters. They know how idealistic and gullible they are, and will believe the lies. Easy prey.

Urmstongran Wed 13-Nov-19 16:54:38

Actually, it is a mess. No less than Labour. In other news today in the Guardian, McCluskey: "The shadow cabinet should keep quiet about how it would campaign in the event of another referendum." In a word let's keep our head in the, ahem, sand, and not talk what the Labour position is on Brexit.

So not a lie - but a big omission!

And that is how the cookie crumbles. Labour will lose this election. And no amount of sunny uplands and great goodies party programme for UK that they have planned will save them.

Q. As regards politicians lying - how do we know they are?
A. Their mouths are open!

C’mon people, it’s a GE. We expect our politicians to lie. It’s in their DNA.

Urmstongran Wed 13-Nov-19 16:27:34

Totally agree here with Opal Pantsglas2 lemongove (that made me laugh) and Chestnut
??

Chestnut Wed 13-Nov-19 15:56:30

I consider it an 'electoral offence' to have put a pro-remain leaflet through every door paid for by taxpayers who had no say in the matter. It told us all the wonderful benefits of being part of the EU and what a loss it would be to leave. As a leaver I did not want to pay for that leaflet. There should have been a similar leaflet for the leave side.
Despite that, the people still voted to leave!

Whitewavemark2 Wed 13-Nov-19 15:45:50

Molly?Stroud
@MollyMEP

Vote Leave, led by Johnson and Cummings, committed electoral offences during the 2016 referendum

They’ve just failed in their legal attempt to cover this up

We should not ‘respect the referendum’: it was won illegally by Tory PM

The court of Appeal has found against Vote Leave and upheld the judgement that the commission has the right to publish its findings which vote leave has unsuccessfully tried to suppress.

Mmm no right wing posters or propaganda then? Possibly because even the most ardent can't find a damn thing to post about!!!

lemongrove Wed 13-Nov-19 13:41:16

Yes, I imagine a lot of husbands who hide behind their newspapers murmuring ‘yes dear’ to their angry wives.?

Chestnut Wed 13-Nov-19 12:35:11

Opal speaks with wisdom! These threads are drowning in left wing propaganda, and a lot of muck throwing. There are some really obsessive left wing posters who just keep repeating themselves. Still, I suppose if they vent here then it gives their friends and family a break.

Hetty58 Wed 13-Nov-19 12:27:49

'If' anything's left - but I doubt it!

Amagran Wed 13-Nov-19 12:24:19

I read a good letter in the "i" the other day. It was on the lines of: If you are disillusioned/undecided and don't know how to vote, do this. Put all the election addresses on the table, cross out all the statements which are common to all the addresses, cross out all the statements which are incorrect and then cross out all the statements you disagree with. If there is anything left, vote for that party.

trisher Wed 13-Nov-19 12:07:09

It is awful isn't it varian If anyone wants to cringe- www.youtube.com/watch?v=97zPDojMWiQ
Watch out for Boris's nod to inclusivity when he says "Hi" to an Asian man who just happens to walk past grin

varian Tue 12-Nov-19 19:15:50

I have just seen the most cringeable party political broadcast ever starring Boris Johnson, who likes walking his new dog first thing in the morning, cooking steak and oven chips and listening to the Clash and the Rolling Stones. A true man of the people who wants to "get brexit done". Relatively few lies (for him) but I feel sick.

trisher Tue 12-Nov-19 19:02:03

lemongrove perhaps you could post some instance from another GE where one party only criticises the other and never mentions its own policies.
