Past general elections

By the time anyone grows up, whether on Mumsnet or Gransnet, they should have the maturity to know that you can only judge the past by the past;s standards.

Bear in mind it will not belong before another generation will be judging us by their standards and finding us wanting.

I do wonder what Mumsnetters might make of this patronising mysogynistic style of interviewing.

Robin Day asks Janet Fookes how old she is and when she simpers 32, he say's "you don't look it" and she thanks him -as if 32 is very old and it is just wonderful to be paid such a compliment because it means she's still attractive and obviously any normal woman of 32 would look too old to be considered attractive.

Just imagine him talking to a 32 year old male MP like that!

I thought Cliff Michelmore was going to say something calming. It did make me laugh but I am sure it would outrage a lot of younger people and some not so young.

I certainly am and I don't remember thinking that Robin Day was a horrible man. I suppose his attitudes were those of most men at that time.

In the 1970 general election there were only 26 female MPs elected out of 650.

In 2015 there were 151 female MPs elected.

So at least in that respect we have moved on but still have some way to go to get to the 50:50 parity which would properly represent the electorate.

We cannot judge a previous time by today's standards, that is silly. I often wonder what we are doing or saying now that will horrify our great grandchildren when they grow up because it is so judgemental or definitely not politically correct for 2049.

No, just normal for 1970. We wouldn't tolerate it now. I don't think Ms Fookes was particularly enchanted. Cliff Michelmore was just as bad, BTW.

But Robin Day was held to be a groundbreaker when it came to holding 'power' to account in interviews.
