Murdered in New Zealand

Now that Grace Millane’s killer has been found guilty of murder, I feel able to say what has concerned me throughout his trial.
I have read the daily reports of this horrendous event and been increasingly horrified. As in most trials of this nature, the poor victim’s life has been dissected and analysed, her sexual preferences scrutinised and previous boyfriend called to give evidence.
I feel so sorry for her poor family, obviously having to cope with the loss of their daughter, but compounded by having her personal life aired to the world.
All of this time her murderer’s identity was not disclosed and if he had been found ‘not guilty’ then presumably he would still be anonymous and unsullied.
Poor Mr and Mrs Millane attended every day of this trial. May the guilty verdict enable them to grieve and begin to heal.

Well I assume they have the Internet over there so if still be available for all.

I assumed that NZ kept the names of accused private until conviction.

Which is a very good idea in my opinion

They don’t care if it jeopardises the appeal - as long as it’s cluck bait to increase the income of tax exiles

suziewoozie Sat 23-Nov-19 21:09:09

Out gutter press is exactly that

BlueBelle Sat 23-Nov-19 20:56:04

Here oopsminty but not in NZ it’s been outed by the media over here but they are furious at our press in NZ

Oopsminty Sat 23-Nov-19 20:46:49

His name has been public for at least 24 hours

Callistemon Sat 23-Nov-19 20:29:12

Why?

I thought New Zealand was better country than that.

BlueBelle Sat 23-Nov-19 20:05:23

Just been talking to my son in NZ he said they are all sworn to silence about his name and warned that anyone mentioning his name on social media etc can face prosecution
He also said its common knowledge he will be out in 10 years

An ex boyfriend was called as a witness and confirmed her sexual interest in rough sex.
That suggests that might have been an element in this case but being into rough sex does not make the victim deserving of being killed!!

Dinahmo Sat 23-Nov-19 11:53:40

Ladymuck Your suggestions are appalling. As far as I can see there is no evidence that she was into rough sex. That was his defence without her being in a position to refute it. And the memory of that will live with her parents forever.

Galaxy it's not just rough sex being used as an excuse for killing a woman. Often the excuse given is that the man was bullied etc etc.

Too often reasons are given for killing women when there are no witnesses to contradict and yet when a woman kills the partner that has been mentally and/or physically abusing her she is still tried for murder rather than manslaughter.

Sue if you read my link, you’ll see it’s getting worse.

SueDonim Sat 23-Nov-19 10:51:53

This murder is absolutely shocking and I feel the right verdict was delivered. Poor Grace and her poor parents.

It's now been reported in the press that her murderer has form for doing this kind of thing to girls and that he is a serial liar. Even his half-brother has told of how rotten he is. And of course no one can consent to their own murder.

I hate this concept of blaming the victim for their own death. I thought as a society we'd gone past that.

This is a good article- it includes the point that misogyny has become mainstream.

Please continue to join us in calling it out Galaxy.

Galaxy Sat 23-Nov-19 09:02:34

Thanks both, it wasn't just this thread so I did wonder. But there are also a lot of people calling it out so that's a good thing.

suziewoozie Sat 23-Nov-19 09:01:29

The ‘rough sex gone wrong’ defence is sadly being increasingly used by violent murdering men.

suziewoozie Sat 23-Nov-19 08:58:59

Galaxy whilst BB is right that it’s not many, there a small, vocal bitter group of posters who are misogynistic. On about half a dozen threads at the moment young women are being treated with disdain and contempt. I do wonder what sort of sons women who hate women produce and I also wonder if they have daughters and how their mothers affect their sense of self worth.

crystaltipps Sat 23-Nov-19 08:56:10

Talk about blame the victim - perhaps women should sign a consent form before sex - please let it be known that I don’t consent to my own murder. Funny that women don’t seem to be murdering men during “rough sex”, but men are increasingly using this as a defence to murdering women.

Beckett Sat 23-Nov-19 08:22:57

As far as I am aware the statement that she wanted him to choke her during sex was a story he told as part of his defence. Is there any proof from previous partners that this was the case? Or is it just another of his lies.

I truly despair at the comments which seem to suggest that she was somehow to blame for her own death

BlueBelle Sat 23-Nov-19 08:21:19

Sorry predictive text again...... pornography not pornographers

BlueBelle Sat 23-Nov-19 08:20:20

No only did he brutally murder her he took sexually explicit photos of her, spent a period looking at pornographers on his laptop before going out on another date and some (well maybe one) are questioning HER character
I too have never read 50 shades I had no idea what it was about apart from sex but if it was about SM it should never have been printed

growstuff Sat 23-Nov-19 07:58:31

It's a big leap from casual sex to murder during a sexual act.

growstuff Sat 23-Nov-19 07:57:17

Urmstongran I haven't been following the trial, so I'm grateful that you gave that detail from the post-mortem. It seems pretty obvious that it was murder and the jury got it right.

I agree with you.
