Any thoughts on John McDonnell 's proposal to to compensate waspi women to the tune of £58 bn?

mcem Sun 24-Nov-19 13:44:00

foxyferret haven't you worked that the whole system is based on contributing and receiving!
What alternative would you suggest other than magic money trees?

spabbygirl Sun 24-Nov-19 13:43:47

Its actually Tories who spend irresponsibly but they say they don't in order to mislead us. Take £1bn to DUP, making Brexit coins which now have to be melted down, expensive advertising campaign, Boris' purchase of water cannon he wasn't allowed to use.
Labour are the only group that provide for ordinary folk & I'm sure they will do something for us, the SNP worked out it wouldn't cost that much

Pension age should have been equalised back in the 1970s. Remember the Dagenham ladies fight for equality?
There was a time when married women could pay a small stamp only. A great many women did and then complained they didn't get a pension in their own right and had to wait until their husbands received their pension at 65.

I agree grab a that the number of in-work benefit claimants is a national scandal.

I'm not sure if I'm right on this, but I've read that 40% of working families are claiming.

An unintended consequence of a well-intended policy.

lemongrove Sun 24-Nov-19 13:30:13

grabba.....this £58b has not been costed by the LP...it’s a hasty announcement done with no costings at all!

Urmstongran Sun 24-Nov-19 13:26:38

I think it’ll end up being today’s news and tomorrow’s chip supper paper.

grabba Sun 24-Nov-19 13:18:42

Those questioning where the money is coming from do realise that the Labour party, not the Conservatives, are the party who have costed their proposed changes?
The Conservatives reneged on student fees aided and abetted by the Liberal Democrats.
The banks and others have benefited from the 'old boys' network while there are more foodbanks here than any civilised and developed country should have. I had never heard of food banks while I was growing up and some in power appear to be downplaying the need for them and how many people need to use them despite all evidence to the contrary.
There are more people in work claiming benefit which contradicts those who choose to think benefits are dished out to only the shirkers and people who choose not to work. How anyone can think this is a mystery to me.
I think all voters have to search their conscience and look at all the issues as if one of their family was in need, then make a decision.

dayvidg Sun 24-Nov-19 13:17:58

@MaizieD
If you watched the clip you would realise that she was talking about the equalisation of pension age, not the actual age of pensionentitlement. Presumably this is covered by equal rights legislation.

A sovereign state that has a fiat economy that produces its own money cannot go bankrupt who we gonna go bankrupt to?

Shortlegs Sun 24-Nov-19 12:42:09

A cynical, vote catching ploy. If voted in, Labour will take you back to the 70's.

jura2 Sun 24-Nov-19 12:42:03

Well if you vote the Tories in- your daughters will not get their pension until they are 75 - I am sure they will thank you for it sad

GracesGranMK3 Sun 24-Nov-19 12:32:32

I think this will be more helpful than a long explanation from one (or more) of us grandtanteJE65

grandtanteJE65 Sun 24-Nov-19 12:29:10

What are waaspi women, please?

I gather it has something to do with the raising of retirement age, but haven't a clue what this is all about.

GracesGranMK3 Sun 24-Nov-19 12:28:41

Lies from the right-wing. I would say check your facts but we are now all aware that Tories never use a fact where a lie will give you better publicity. This is the first lie I've spotted today on GN today

1. Finding a solution for the Waspi women wasn't in the Labour manifesto.

It was in the manifesto. They said they would come up with a solution. They have just given a more in depth explanation.

(Please feel free to add to the list)

Foxyferret Sun 24-Nov-19 12:28:18

Ha ha! I would believe this when I see it. Even if it happened I expect it would be a case of giving out with one hand and taking back with the other. Do these politicians really believe that we are so gullible? We have had years of being lied to by all parties, we are not going to suddenly start believing these empty promises, especially at election time when they will promise the earth just until they win.

Keeper1 Sun 24-Nov-19 12:15:31

The company I work for looked at getting on the NHS preferred supplier list it was so onerous we gave up. No wonder a company once on the list them charges whatever it feels like.

Jabberwok Sun 24-Nov-19 12:15:06

jura , I think the cut off date was April 5th 1951, My cousin who was born on the 13th, would have been just outside it. She emigrated to Australia years ago so obviously isn't affected!

Keeper1 Sun 24-Nov-19 12:07:53

I saw this in the news this morning and cannot see how the money will be found.

Fairiesfolly Sun 24-Nov-19 12:06:57

I absolutely think it is disgusting the way we were treated. I am not holding my breath however to get any of my stolen money back! Just another ploy for a vote for Labour, and I will never ever vote Labour again while Corbyn is the leader. More lies to get the vote.

pollyanna1962 Sun 24-Nov-19 12:05:33

Not enough, I'm 1960's born and nothing for me at all. My present forecast says my pension at 67. I've 40 full years in and cant either add or take away for another 9 years. And I only found out last year.

lemongrove Sun 24-Nov-19 11:52:05

red1 You are wrong, many politicians carry on their jobs as MP’s well after retirement age, both men and women.

lemongrove Sun 24-Nov-19 11:50:33

Gonegirl you didn’t miss it in their manifesto.....it wasn’t in it.
Their change of heart is no doubt linked to watching QT when Johnson told a woman that he couldn’t help her with that problem ( more or less) and it has been seized on by Labour as a good wheeze for more votes.
Any government will have to award ( some) compensation after the court case, if it finds in their favour.

MaizieD Sun 24-Nov-19 11:37:09

According to Ann Widdecombe, the Tory government wanted a longer transition period, but under E.U. law this was not possible.

Absolute nonsense, dayvidg. Pensionable age is not within the EU remit.

But perhaps you could provide details of the EU regulation that she is referring to? hmm

jura2 Sun 24-Nov-19 11:37:07

what was the cut off date- I was born end of Feb 1951, and just got in.

MaizieD Sun 24-Nov-19 11:27:02

Thanks, oldgimmer, though the essence of this is that you don't have to believe me grin. This is reputable analysis of past economic data, I'm just passing it on.
