Get Brexit Done

Is it just me who feels almost sick every time Johnson spouts this trite little phrase (it's as puerile as his oven-ready chicken deal c**p.

My replacement for it would be:

Once Brexit is done
Britain is done!

MamaCaz Mon 25-Nov-19 12:32:43

AllTheLs

In answer to your last question, my answer (though I can't answer for others) is no. I would accept the result of another referendum, based on what we now know, but not on the basis of a General Election.

AllTheLs Mon 25-Nov-19 12:35:08

MamaCaz, No I didn't think you would somehow. But there we go.

trisher Mon 25-Nov-19 12:41:33

So AllTheLs if by some fluke there was a Liberal Democrat government would you accept the end of Brexit?

Alexa Mon 25-Nov-19 12:45:50

It's a catchy phrase. Many politicians use catchy phrases to catch people's votes.

The thing is how to get Brexit over and done with.

Cancel it altogether

Or

Do whatever it takes to stop England being a major influencer in Europe

AllTheLs Mon 25-Nov-19 12:48:50

Yes, I would. Wouldn't be happy about it, but would (reluctantly) accept it.

GracesGranMK3 Mon 25-Nov-19 12:58:28

Listening to Politics Live apparently, in focus groups, when asked to put down one word to describe Mr Johnson the most frequently used word is "liar". How on earth did this man get to be out Prime Minister?

NotSpaghetti Mon 25-Nov-19 13:04:09

AlltheLs But, if Boris does win with a majority, will Remainers then accept it?
No. Absolutely not.
Muddling up Brexit with a General Election is no kind of solution. The clue us in the name - it's too general an election to extrapolate the particular from it.

As I said before, although some who support remaining in the EU won't ever be happy to leave, there are many, like me, who honestly just want to check.

I should have said that many people think it's reasonable to check if this is what we still want as a country, and (if so) what kind of leave we would want.
I was not deliberately implying that people who don't want to check aren't reasonable people. I'm sure lots are!

jura2 Mon 25-Nov-19 13:05:21

No, not at all. Only a second referendum would settle this. This ridiculous GE is irrelevant here and will solve nothing.

MamaCaz, No I didn't think you would somehow. But there we go

hmm

Farage stated just before the last referendum that 'he' would not stop his crusade to leave the EU even if the majority voted remain.

I am saying that I would accept the result of a clear, legal referendum where we know (as far as is possible) exactly what we are voting for.

Not that I would have any say if the Tories get a majority, so in that sense I would have to accept it, but I do not accept the principle of a General Election, with all the many other factors in play, being used to force this through, especially when Boris is refusing to release a report that might show foreign interference in that last referendum, until after the election.

Barmeyoldbat Mon 25-Nov-19 13:26:30

Well I am sorry but I agree with MamaCaz, I could just about accept the result of another referendum but not leaving jut with the result of the GE.

My feeling is that even if by some sad chance Boris should make it and win all the other parties will gang up against him so unless he has a huge majority nothing will change for him.

grapefruitpip Mon 25-Nov-19 13:35:23

I think the idea of getting" something done" appeals as it implies something akin to tidying your under the sink area and then you can feel smug.

Unfortunately it is a hollow sound bite.

Curlywhirly Mon 25-Nov-19 13:47:01

It's just another catchy slogan - like Theresa May's 'Strong and Stable' and look how that ended up!

Calendargirl Mon 25-Nov-19 13:51:21

If Boris gets a working majority, then Brexit will ‘get done’, whatever GN Remainers think.
At least I hope so!

Yehbutnobut Mon 25-Nov-19 13:59:48

MamaCaz it’s dumbed down for the dumb. They love it!

Johnson’s Conservatives want this election to be about Brexit—epitomized by their dubious pledge to “get Brexit done.” (The formal process of leaving merely kicks off years of negotiations about the future relationship between the U.K. and the EU.) Johnson is ahead in the polls—but so was the party’s previous leader, Theresa May, as she headed into the last election two years ago, and she still managed to lose her majority.

Under Johnson, the party has moved away from the center ground and become less small-c conservative. It is now closer to the rabble-rousing instincts of right-wing populism than to the patrician geniality of many of its former leaders.

Already this feels like the most consequential British election of my career: a contest over not just Brexit, but the type of country the U.K. wants to be. The vote on December 12 could, in theory, stop Brexit—but it could also endorse Boris Johnson’s plan for an ultra-hard form of it.

For those who haven’t figured it out yet Corbyn will easily get a deal that will include a Custom’s Union. This was one of May’s ‘red lines’.

A Customs Union would solve the NI problem and any that might arise when Scotland breaks free. It is NOT the same as the single market, but more aligned to the old concept of the Common Market which was acceptable to many.

This will not require years of negotiations. And, as the is now not possible in law to leave without a deal, then those are the two options Corbyn will put to the electorate.

I’m neutral too. So long as we have that Customs Union with the EU we will retain control of our NHS and not become a puppet of a Trump.

Yehbutnobut Mon 25-Nov-19 14:18:36

Oops....part of that deleted itself

The two options...this deal or remain,

GracesGranMK3 Mon 25-Nov-19 14:22:52

AlltheLs But, if Boris does win with a majority, will Remainers then accept it?

No. I will have voted on the basis of many different things and I will assume others will have too. If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck then the chances are its a duck. This looks and sounds like a General Election not a referendum.

varian Mon 25-Nov-19 14:59:51

Can we be sure that the law ensures there will be no crash out no deal brexit?

What happens if Johnson wins the election, takes us out of the EU, but cannot get a trade deal by the end of next year? He is saying there will be no extension of the transition period.

humptydumpty Mon 25-Nov-19 15:16:10

I agree varian and this is the crucial point: we would then by default leave with no deal.

NotSpaghetti Mon 25-Nov-19 15:24:42

varian - irrespective of what "he says" he will do, it is still possible to leave with no deal.

GracesGranMK3 Mon 25-Nov-19 15:25:23

He's lying varian. That is one thing you can rely on. We could even play "guess who he will blame this time". Never his fault.

GracesGranMK3 Mon 25-Nov-19 15:27:07

Possible but is that a society you really want? I don't find the threat of poverty - which is what it will mean for many more, at all enticing.

Tooting29 Mon 25-Nov-19 17:03:23

This election is turning into a second referendum. The deal on the table or remain. Whatever the outcome it's important the winning party(s) should have the mandate to act.

NotSpaghetti Mon 25-Nov-19 17:19:56

Tooting29 - it doesn’t feel like a second referendum to me, and it isn’t a mandate. It feels like a General Election, confused by the EU matter.
