Get Brexit Done

Is it just me who feels almost sick every time Johnson spouts this trite little phrase (it's as puerile as his oven-ready chicken deal c**p.

My replacement for it would be:

Once Brexit is done
Britain is done!

Yehbutnobut Mon 25-Nov-19 13:59:48

MamaCaz it’s dumbed down for the dumb. They love it!

Calendargirl Mon 25-Nov-19 13:51:21

If Boris gets a working majority, then Brexit will ‘get done’, whatever GN Remainers think.
At least I hope so!

Curlywhirly Mon 25-Nov-19 13:47:01

It's just another catchy slogan - like Theresa May's 'Strong and Stable' and look how that ended up!

grapefruitpip Mon 25-Nov-19 13:35:23

I think the idea of getting" something done" appeals as it implies something akin to tidying your under the sink area and then you can feel smug.

Unfortunately it is a hollow sound bite.

Barmeyoldbat Mon 25-Nov-19 13:26:30

Well I am sorry but I agree with MamaCaz, I could just about accept the result of another referendum but not leaving jut with the result of the GE.

My feeling is that even if by some sad chance Boris should make it and win all the other parties will gang up against him so unless he has a huge majority nothing will change for him.

MamaCaz, No I didn't think you would somehow. But there we go

hmm

Farage stated just before the last referendum that 'he' would not stop his crusade to leave the EU even if the majority voted remain.

I am saying that I would accept the result of a clear, legal referendum where we know (as far as is possible) exactly what we are voting for.

Not that I would have any say if the Tories get a majority, so in that sense I would have to accept it, but I do not accept the principle of a General Election, with all the many other factors in play, being used to force this through, especially when Boris is refusing to release a report that might show foreign interference in that last referendum, until after the election.

jura2 Mon 25-Nov-19 13:05:21

No, not at all. Only a second referendum would settle this. This ridiculous GE is irrelevant here and will solve nothing.

NotSpaghetti Mon 25-Nov-19 13:04:09

AlltheLs But, if Boris does win with a majority, will Remainers then accept it?
No. Absolutely not.
Muddling up Brexit with a General Election is no kind of solution. The clue us in the name - it's too general an election to extrapolate the particular from it.

As I said before, although some who support remaining in the EU won't ever be happy to leave, there are many, like me, who honestly just want to check.

I should have said that many people think it's reasonable to check if this is what we still want as a country, and (if so) what kind of leave we would want.
I was not deliberately implying that people who don't want to check aren't reasonable people. I'm sure lots are!

GracesGranMK3 Mon 25-Nov-19 12:58:28

Listening to Politics Live apparently, in focus groups, when asked to put down one word to describe Mr Johnson the most frequently used word is "liar". How on earth did this man get to be out Prime Minister?

AllTheLs Mon 25-Nov-19 12:48:50

Yes, I would. Wouldn't be happy about it, but would (reluctantly) accept it.

Alexa Mon 25-Nov-19 12:45:50

It's a catchy phrase. Many politicians use catchy phrases to catch people's votes.

The thing is how to get Brexit over and done with.

Cancel it altogether

Or

Do whatever it takes to stop England being a major influencer in Europe

trisher Mon 25-Nov-19 12:41:33

So AllTheLs if by some fluke there was a Liberal Democrat government would you accept the end of Brexit?

AllTheLs Mon 25-Nov-19 12:35:08

MamaCaz, No I didn't think you would somehow. But there we go.

MamaCaz Mon 25-Nov-19 12:32:43

AllTheLs

In answer to your last question, my answer (though I can't answer for others) is no. I would accept the result of another referendum, based on what we now know, but not on the basis of a General Election.

Violettham Mon 25-Nov-19 12:18:22

I am very old. When I learned about the suffrogettes in school, I promised my self that I would go to my polling station every election to vote or spoil paper if I couldnt vote for any of them. I have done this always, maybe one if I happened to be unexpectedly away

AllTheLs Mon 25-Nov-19 12:15:36

What many reasonable people want is to check if we DO still want to leave or not before it's too late.

NotS Like it or not, this election is about Brexit. It's why it was called in the first place, because Parliament refused to let Boris 'sort it out'. And the polls at the moment appear to be showing that the majority of people DO still want to leave.

But, if Boris does win with a majority, will Remainers then accept it?

lemongrove Mon 25-Nov-19 12:06:08

Your last link was one that I was reading on BBC info, thanks,
And which states the fact that 1 in 3 young people are not registered. Also 25% of the black community and 24% of the Asian community, also not registered.

Labaik Mon 25-Nov-19 11:49:50

Something happened yesterday that just about summed Brexit up for me. I was speaking to someone socially and noted they were wearing a UKIP badge. They then went on to describe how they'd had a accident and their life had been saved by an ambulance driver who they then described as a 'darkie'. I was so taken aback I didn't respond but I wish I had.. I actually feel sickened by it.

MamaCaz Mon 25-Nov-19 11:23:05

Trisher

I agree.

Also, I can't get past the thought that the whole of the UK will be stuffed as a result of his oven-ready deal!

varian Mon 25-Nov-19 10:44:01

May says 80% voted for a Brexit party in 2017. So she’s said it not me: “If you don’t want Brexit don’t vote Conservative”

trisher Mon 25-Nov-19 10:37:35

I was thinking that the phrase should be "Get done by Brexit" MamaCaz as I think most of us will be. With the exception of Boris and his mates who view the new EU tax regulation with horror!!!

NotSpaghetti Mon 25-Nov-19 10:33:24

And here's an interesting article which demonstrates the rise in younger people registered to vote.
It doesn't of course mean that there aren't loads of young people who haven't done it though.

NotSpaghetti Mon 25-Nov-19 10:30:24

These are the government figures if anyone's interested:

www.gov.uk/performance/register-to-vote/registrations-by-age-group#from=2019-10-01T00:00:00Z&to=2019-11-01T00:00:00Z

GracesGranMK3 Mon 25-Nov-19 10:25:41

And when we were young was it any different.

When you quote figures could you quote where they come from. At the moment, reading your post, they are just out of your head and I'm afraid that doesn't give me any confidence in them from you past posts.

lemongrove Mon 25-Nov-19 10:13:19

1 in 3 younger voters have still not registered to vote in the upcoming GE.
Of the ones who did register, how many will actually bother to fill in and post the envelope or go to a polling station on the day.....
It’s no good younger voters protesting about any election or referendum if they didn’t bother to vote on the day.
