So much evidence out there being ignored by the racist press

And yes, as a Jewish person I was also offended by the coded antisemitism the Tories and their media allies used to attack Ed Miliband. Not just the bacon sandwich, by the way. More the constant references to ‘north London’ and the fact he was going to ‘stab Britain in the back’.

Gg ''We do still have free speech in this country you know.'' - well there are limits, legally, re inciting hatred, etc.

But we are talking about the massive hypocrisy that 'free speech' when talking about some religious communities, is totally unacceptable- whereas the same free speech, talking about other religious communities, if fair and dandy.

Kosher is cruel.

I know several women, through the work I have now retired from who wore burkhas.
They chose to wear them, there was no coersion, no grooming. These were highly educated, wonderful women who made a choice.

When I had known them for a few years, and had developed a close and friendly relationship, I did ask them why they wore them (i had seen them all without burkhas on numerous occasions in private).
They felt it was liberating. Simple as that.
They never had to worry about how they looked, just how they acted.
No concerns about how their hair looked, just what they had to say.

These women were the most loving, giving, highly educated and wonderful people. To her them being denigrated as nothing more than 'letter boxes' disgusts me.

I could enlighten you. I am not from an orthodox background, so I am not well versed in kashrut.

Baggs Wed 27-Nov-19 18:51:33

The top Siri suggestion thingy that came up when I googled a query about Orthodox Jews and two fridges was this. It's rather fun. Do have a look.

I guess my lasagne which we are about to eat is not kosher?

Gonegirl Wed 27-Nov-19 18:49:10

Ok. I think wearing a wig over your hair is odd too.

Shoot me now.

Callistemon Wed 27-Nov-19 18:49:09

Well, grapefruitpip has said that she is Jewish (on another thread) so may know if she cares to enlighten us.

I've never really understood why a garment which is all-encompassing and worn mainly in hot countries should be made of black material.
Black absorbs heat, white reflects it. I thought that was why some people in the Middle East sensibly wear white robes.

Baggs Wed 27-Nov-19 18:43:41

Would you like to tell us some of it then, gfp? I would be interested to hear.

grapefruitpip Wed 27-Nov-19 18:43:35

ما شاء الله‎,

Baggs Wed 27-Nov-19 18:42:59

The Jewish women who cover their hair with other hair do not cover their faces as well, do they? In which case, their wigs are just another kind of hat. Until recently nearly everyone wore a hat, often indoors as well as outdoors.

some practical ideas about the food in question

Er, no, there is a bit more to it.

Gonegirl Wed 27-Nov-19 18:40:37

Stop virtue signalling grapefruitpip. Don't believe you really give a toss about it.

Baggs Wed 27-Nov-19 18:37:09

Why is there no comparison between a 'garment' made of a large amount of black fabric and a garment made of a large amount of, say, khaki fabric? That's all I'm comparing.

Baggs Wed 27-Nov-19 18:35:27

Being a well-educated person (someone who knows how to find out, rather than someone who knows), I did some looking up and found that I had heard previously about ultra orthodox Jewish women wearing wigs because of a rule about covering their hair. I don't recall hearing about the two fridges thing but I expect it's to do with keeping different kinds of food separate, which, while I may not feel that need, would seem to be based on some practical ideas about the food in question.

However, jura, your scathingness about my knowledge is just a deflection. Have you come up with an answer to my query about the practicalness of the burka?

jura2 Wed 27-Nov-19 18:33:28

probably not- because the is no comparison whatsoever sad

Baggs Wed 27-Nov-19 18:30:38

Why, gfp?

What is being talked about is a large black garment.

Would you feel sick to your stomach if I spoke in such terms (sack-like, for example) of, say, a voluminous overcoat? I doubt it.

Thanks for correcting me - I speak French all day and every day currently- and ...

but it makes little difference to the message. Jewish women do not wear wigs for pratical reasons, neither do they have 2 fridges just to have more space.

Baggs Wed 27-Nov-19 18:10:03

You are correct, jura. I don't know much anything about Jewism. I've never even come across that word before.

The people I know who are or were wig-wearers wore them for practical reasons so my comments were based on my experience.

All well-educated people know nothing about all sorts of things.

jura2 Wed 27-Nov-19 17:51:00

Baggs this commet amazes me ''I think most people who wear a wig do so for practical reasons rather than because of brainwashing, likewise owning a fridge, cooker, etc.''

I always thought of you as a highly educated woman. You don't know much about Jewism.

Callistemon Wed 27-Nov-19 17:45:23

Not that it’s influencing anyone mind you ( more like the opposite.)

Yes, they are having the opposite effect to that intended, I'm sure.

But surely it is not for BJ to be telling Muslim women that a garment of clothing " is oppressive".
Actually, I think it is a good idea for those in power to speak out for women who may be being coerced by their menfolk into wearing such garments.
If they choose to wear such garments then so be it, it is up to them. But not all wear them through choice.
