Brexit dividing my family.

I am entitled to an Irish passport and I am applying for one. My sister has already got hers.

We never were going to join it. But, may have to if and when we have to beg to rejoin….

No, we will not join the Euro - now we are leaving, true.

No nobody is suggesting If we leave there will be war in Europe, but regrettably trade and war often go together.

Look how Trump has unilaterally been applying tarriffs and custom duties, on friend and foe alike, as a way of establishing power over other countries and forcing them to do as he wishes. He has damaged wider relationships between the USA and other countries. He is already trying to cut in when we leave the EU, if we want an agreement with the USA, it is to be on his terms and do your really think we will have any choice in the matter?

This contrasts with the EU whcih has chosen to gather countries into the fold and to work in co-operative way between members for their greater good.

Jura2, it was the comment about those who think it is silly to fall out being those who voted leave and think that Brexit will be wonderful thing that I was referring to. Certainly not true of me .

Experiencednotold As a professional information analyst I believe I’m entirely capable of forming my own decision, which was connected to longer term economics and a belief that the U.K. is better determining its own destiny without interference - excellent post, I very much agree with you, it's all about the economy for me too and I voted leave because I think the UK's economy AND currency should NOT be tied to the rest of the EU, and if we stay in, my concern is that we will eventually join the Euro, which would eventually be catastrophic for us long term.

The main purpose of the EU from the start was not commerce it was peace between European countries. Building up common practices, standards and business methods between the members are some of the range of methods used to build up these close relationships.

The Erasmus programme has been used to build up links between universities and young academics through shared research programmes in science and other subjects.

DS is an academic and he has close links with universities in the EU through EU funded initiatives. These will be snapped when we leave the EU. Personal links will remain, but the official links that mean he has been able to build links with new scholars by being on the examining boards of universities in France and Luxembourg will end as will exchange studentships.

No the UN is not responsible for the peace in Europe. It has no powers in Europe and could only offer to intervene when a difficult situation looks like ending in violence. That situation has not arisen for 75 years.

NATO is an agreement that Europe and North America will work in concert to protect NATO members from external aggressors.

There has been no major European War since 1945 because the EU has brought most European Countries together, to work together for the common good - and like the measles vaccine so many countries are part of the EU that those countries outside act as if they were members, because there really is no alternative.

PS. Another thing which has meant I have zilch respect for those who voted to leave is when they call people names such as "arch-remoaner". But it's OK for those who voted remain to call leavers "scum of the earth"? So we should take any notice of your opinion, why exactly?

Respectfully to all other posters, I think it's NATO that has been responsible for keeping the peace in Europe in the last 70 years.

Whilst not minimising the value of the EEC/EU in peacekeeping for Europe I think NATO has been a major factor since inception in 1949 which people rarely credit.

Don't make me laugh ananimous. Sorry, but the UN really hasn't been as effective a peace-keeper as people hoped. The reason we have had peace in Europe is because people have mingled more freely and done business with people in other countries. As a result, people have learnt more about other people and cultures. Nobody in their right mind wants to start a war with customers/suppliers, when profits are involved.

ginny - I have not fallen out with anyone - just put distance. It is not about a mere matter of opinion- it is about things coming through which are very unpleasant - racism and totaly lack of empathy for others.

Take my Trump loving cousins - it is not about preferring Trump to Obama, as such. It is about what they stand for- and then for the sheer racism attached- saying he is not even entitled to be American, has a false passport, and is an AlQuaida plant - and that Michelle is the most ugly stupid bitch and looks like a monkey. But my last post was about the inevitable brain, skills and entrepreneurial drain - the EU ones, those from different ethnic groups, and our own too.

I think there are plenty of other reasons MOnica, but for me it is the reason which underpins all the others.

The United Nations is responsible for the peace we have in Europe not the EU (or Common Market) as it was originally known.

Labaik I am absolutely with you. I have said it before, and I will say it again. In the 75 years between 1870 and 1945 there were three major European Wars. In the 75 years between 1945 and 2020 there have been none.

What other reason can anyone want to remain in the EU?

Jura2. Wrong. I voted to remain and I would do the same again. However, I would not fall out with much loved family if they had a different view.

GillT57 I agree with you. My son in law is from the EU. All my close family voted to remain but I found it very hard when some family voted to leave saying they didn't want immigrants in the country because they are a drain on the UK. They were talking about my very hard working son in law and my grandchildren. They have made them feel unwanted and unwelcome and made life much more difficult for them here.

I don't think we remain voters got the full picture, now I'm excited that were opening up to the whole world - Let's face it we were discriminating against our friends in the wider world in favour of a smaller market of cheap labour.

Because they're being forced to go, not choosing to do so. And also, imo, the point of staying in the EU is that it's probably been one of the greatest peace keeping initiatives in the history of the world and we're hell bent on destroying it.......
