grannyhall29 arrived from nowhere to bring this piece of nasty Fake News- her post was deleted, and she has disappeared - rest my case.

jura2 Tue 10-Dec-19 22:50:58

This sick piece of deliberate FAKE NEWS, about the mother deliberately setting this up- is being discussed on Newsnight. Proven to be FAKE NEWS, and being Twitted from accounts linked to the far right 'worming its way into peoples' minds' in a totally unregulated way.

Some very nasty stuff going round for sure, and very concerning signs of populism- where people will accept anything coming from their chosen 'leaders' as the truth- totally unchecked. Johnson's campaign is a real and worrying indication of this.

Direct action - by voting None

At present, UK elections are like a referendum where you can only say 'yes' to what is on offer. That will continue until enough voters clearly say 'no'.

There have been petitions asking for 'None of the Above' (NOTA) on the ballot paper for many years. However, like the demand for votes for women in the early 20th century, success doesn't come just from asking.

Voters have to make it happen. We already have the vote. It just requires some of the Unheard Third to vote NONE in protest, instead of being silent.

Here's how it works in more detail…

Hugh Grant
@HackedOffHugh

Just had this text from a chum who is a senior UK Professor of child oncology “- god what a bloody mess we are in - Boris’ oven ready Brexit is going to destroy our European cancer trials for young people and the European sources for funding them” . Bleak. Vote tactically.

How right George Monbiot is:

If elections are won by lies, we find ourselves governed by liars. They won’t hesitate to ramp up their deceptions when in office. One focus is likely to be voter suppression. Already the Conservatives, learning from Republican tricks in the US, have floated the idea that people must bring photo ID to the polling booths. They know that 3.5 million people, few of whom are likely to vote Conservative, don’t possess it.

The old adages – cheats never prosper, the truth will out, virtue always triumphs – are themselves falsehoods. But, futile as it often seems, one-sided as the war between truth and falsehood always is, we must fight the tide of lies. Don’t let them win this week.

Some of us have been deeply concerned about this threat to our democracy ever since we started finding out about the 'industrial strength' lies told by the Leave campaigns in the run up to the 2016 referendum (and since). Not only industrial strength but told virtually in secret on social media to people specially targeted as being likely to be highly susceptible to them.

The placid acceptance of the tory's massive lies during this election campaign is unbearably frightening...

Thanks for posting the article i mentioned white wave and grow stuff. It was something my daughter sent in messenger, but am not savvy enough to put it on GN.

Both the EU and the LP pose a threat to tax dodging billionaires.

Why else would they use their money and the media they control to campaign relentlessly for the brexitories?

grannypauline Tue 10-Dec-19 11:38:17

VERY interesting to read about the Russian and corporate donations to the Tories.

Jeremy Corbyn has indeed been vilified by the press (and some right wing Labour MPs too!). I don't suppose he takes it personally as obviously ANY left leaning labour leader who poses a threat to the wealthy and corporates (who own the media) is going to be smeared and denigrated day after day!

growstuff Tue 10-Dec-19 11:13:33

Here's the link to the case against the Mail on Sunday again:

It really is! It's absolutely terrifying to realise that political decisions - and real people's lives - will be affected by the behind the scenes games of a few powerful people. This is more like a court from the Middle Ages than a modern functioning democracy.

I seriously do wonder where it will lead. The contingency planning for civil unrest in the Yellowhammer Report makes sense.

Yehbutnobut Tue 10-Dec-19 11:05:34

There is a powerful campaign being run growstuff but this time it is very dirty.

growstuff Tue 10-Dec-19 10:46:41

Has anyone noticed the smears which are being thrown at Philip Schofield since his interview with Johnson? It does seem like more than a coincidence that long-standing criticisms have been dragged up now.

growstuff Tue 10-Dec-19 10:42:57

I wonder how many people will read that Whitewave? I bet more will still have it implanted in their psyches that Labour "wants to steal your home".

I really do despair when people go on about democracy. Having fair access to facts and an informed public are critical to a mature functioning democracy, but we seem to be operating as a third world country with a public swayed by headlines, soundbites and lies.

I really do fear that the real casualty of the shenanigans over the last couple of years will be democracy itself. History books will have a few lines about Johnson. The important events are the fundamental change Brexit will bring and the way events will steer the course of history - and it's not looking good.

Yehbutnobut Tue 10-Dec-19 10:28:41

Stop trying to justify the unjustifiable Annie.

I am glad to see that the totally Fake News posted on here yesterday was removed by GNHQ. Well done them.

However it is worrying that some people either seem

1) unable to distinguish between what is obviously fake or

2) rush to post such c**p because it fits with their own warped views.

MaizieD Tue 10-Dec-19 10:07:51

The mother took the photograph of her child and gave it to The Daily Mirror?

And why shouldn't she, Annie?

People do this all the time; they alert the press to stories that might interest them. Companies, do it, charities do it, political parties do it,; what do you think a 'Press Release' is? That's how the press gets its news.

Please don't tell me that she had a 'political' motive. Politics is about everyday life and going to the press is a perfectly normal way for 'ordinary' people to alert the public to a 'wrong' and get the 'authorities moving.

Grandad1943 Tue 10-Dec-19 10:03:13

Anniebach Quote [ The mother took the photograph of her child and gave it to the Daily Mirror?] End Quote.

So, "the mother took the photograph of her child and gave it to the Daily Mirror", and why should she not do that in the light of the so-called medical care the child was receiving at Leeds hospital.

The Hospital has apologised for the very poor care so there is no doubt that situation was how the Daily Mirror portrayed it. Therefore Anniebach could you please inform this forum how such situations as these are to be prevented from happening in the future if they are not publicised?

Obviously, in his reaction to being asked to comment on the awful care offered to patients at the Leeds hospital due to austerity, Johnson demonstrated to all that he "could not care less".

He was even then prepared to steal the reporter's phone to prevent the situation from being publicised further.

Totally Disgusting.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 10-Dec-19 10:00:39

Here it is.

He won a case against the Mail on Sunday but the regulator won’t correct the case until after the election.

Media manipulation in all its glory.

Another reason why Johnson is totally unfit for office

SirChenjin Tue 10-Dec-19 09:32:54

You absolutely don’t have to vote for one of them lemon - where do the voting rules say that?

Excellent post Grandad1943. Johnson revealed himself for the weak character he is yesterday. He’s completely unfit to take the UK forward over the next 5 difficult years. The slightest whiff of a challenging conversation and he simply caves. Taking a phone off a reporter out of camera shot is reminiscent of something Trump would do - bullying, brash, cowardly behaviour.

lemongrove Tue 10-Dec-19 09:26:47

Hopefully we will all vote for whichever Party we think will do best for the UK, both at home and in the world.

lemongrove Tue 10-Dec-19 09:24:50

We have to vote for one of them crystal it’s all that’s on offer.

varian Tue 10-Dec-19 09:09:48

Johnson's greatest achievement is to have made Jeremy Corbyn look like a statesman.

Anniebach Tue 10-Dec-19 09:09:17

The mother took the photograph of her child and gave it to
The Daily Mirror ?

Grandad1943 Tue 10-Dec-19 09:03:57

Let's face it, all of Britain witnessed the true character of Johnson yesterday. He is a person full of his own self-entitlement and does care about anything that does not fit in with that absolute cause.

The incident with regard to the child at Leeds Hospital certainly did not fit with the above as we are all aware that through austerity the Tories have spent the last nine years bringing the public services (especially the NHS) to the desperately low levels that we all see now.

To avoid seeing that the truth in that reality, Johnson was even prepared to steal a reporters phone who wished to bring the matter of the child at the Leeds hospital to Johnson's attention. However, in his one action, Johnson demonstrated to all of the electorate just how despicable he truly is.

And some would still wish to see this "self-serving, unstable" excuse for a human being lead this country.
