........ of a lack of seasonal EU workers across UK meat plants.

The start of things to come?

SirChenjin Sat 21-Dec-19 09:43:18

Only if the fish were caught by UK fishermen in non EU waters

Callistemon Fri 20-Dec-19 17:48:10

Fish and chips?

jura2 Thu 19-Dec-19 22:05:28

Missadvetnture, agreed that the carvery roast is the only fresh food there, so my choice.

Callistemon Thu 19-Dec-19 20:37:18

What's my Line?

'A pig blanketer'

Nearly as good as a saggar maker's bottom knocker
grin

Callistemon Thu 19-Dec-19 20:34:47

Who invented pigs in blankets anyway?

Callistemon Thu 19-Dec-19 20:33:18

EMMF1948 I'm going to get mine decorating the Christmas cakes (I hope)!

Otherwise they will be just fruit cakes.

SirChenjin Thu 19-Dec-19 20:04:07

That sounds like a fab job - tucking smiley, sleepy piggies into bed with nice cosy blankets smile

...rather than the other thing shock

MissAdventure Thu 19-Dec-19 19:14:21

A pig blanketer. smile

GracesGranMK3 Thu 19-Dec-19 19:08:32

Why doesn't the man invest in a machine that would blanket the pigs? That is one of our biggest issues. These people take the money but do not invest.

MissAdventure Thu 19-Dec-19 18:24:03

No.
It certainly wasn't a boil in the bag roast though.

jura2 Thu 19-Dec-19 18:13:04

Did you visit the kitchen ?

MissAdventure Thu 19-Dec-19 18:10:31

I enjoyed the meal I had there.

jura2 Thu 19-Dec-19 18:09:26

Two of my students worked at the Weatherspoon next door. They said they would never ever consider eating there- all food was boil in the bag re-heated and plonked on a plate.

Yesterday we were passing in front of the Weatherspoon next door to where we used to live- a beautiful historical building- and OH said we could go in and have something to eat - he lost his appetite when I reminded him of the above, and who the owner is and what he stands for. Drove down to an independent pub with great, home cooked food- for the same price ;)

EllanVannin Thu 19-Dec-19 16:54:38

They were probably cheap and nasty ones anyway. Mass produced for all his outlets obnoxious man !
Morrison's and M&S are the same.

trisher Thu 19-Dec-19 11:23:58

Let's not forget those on zero hours contracts who have jobs (so they don't show in the unemployment figures) but don't know from one week to the next how much money they actually have.

SirChenjin Thu 19-Dec-19 11:05:13

Whereas others would be bothered. If your wages are topped up and you’re then told that they won’t be because we don’t have enough cheap manual labour coming in there will be a massive backlash.

MissAdventure Thu 19-Dec-19 10:55:42

I have news.
Benefits are still stopped if people refuse to take jobs.

More news. I have my meagre wages topped up by benefits, and it wouldn't bother me at all to wrap pigs in blankets or any other menial job.

SirChenjin Thu 19-Dec-19 10:52:16

Thankfully we’ve moved on since then - but if he tried it then the people on low incomes who rely on benefits to top up their meagre wages (and who boosted the Tory vote) will not take kindly to having to work in the fields.

CraftyGranny Thu 19-Dec-19 10:41:21

Remember when out of work people were sent for jobs by the Job Center and if they refused to do the jobs, their dole was stopped! hmm

SirChenjin Thu 19-Dec-19 10:35:29

If anyone thinks that Brexit will stop immigrants coming in to do these kinds of manual jobs at £cheap/hr they are deluded. Unless of course he’s going to make it a condition of receiving your tax credits or other benefits hmm

EMMF1948 Thu 19-Dec-19 10:33:15

Surely pigs in blankets are just about the first contribution that young children can make to the Christmas meal, my grandchildren were doing them at 3 or 4, they loved it.

EMMF1948 Thu 19-Dec-19 10:29:58

British people need to do the work!

Why, when it's made so easy not to? I don't know who'll be out in the fields at all hours picking cabbages etc..

SirChenjin Thu 19-Dec-19 10:25:03

It stopped selling champagne because it was hardly selling any Moet (the only one it stocked) but has ‘plans’ to replace Prosecco with new world fizz. Liqueurs and other spirits are imported from the EU. He’s not that daft - the customers would vote with their feet if they couldn’t get the drinks they like and he knows it. He’ll wave the Union Jack- but only to a point.

Firecracker123 Thu 19-Dec-19 10:04:02

I stand corrected re the beer but he had removed all EU wines and fizz.

MawB Thu 19-Dec-19 10:02:40

Hetty58 I absolutely agree with you regarding pigs and intelligence.
There is an old country saying
“Dogs look up to you
Horses look down on you
But pigs is equal”
Flattering to some humans I suspect tchsmile
