News just out.

Aprilrose
My U.S relatives opinion is that many of their fellow americans see this as a democrat 'witch hunt' and will only serve to increase Trumps chances of a further term in the White House.

JenniferEccles Thu 19-Dec-19 12:08:13

He is a divisive figure of course, but I understand the US economy is thriving so he must be doing something right.

Mcrc Thu 19-Dec-19 12:00:54

They want him out because the Democrats know they have a weak chance at 2020.

Mcrc Thu 19-Dec-19 12:00:05

He didn't do anything. the Democrats have wanted him out before he was even elected. "obstruction of Congress" B&$@!!
Our country's democracy is not in peril

Also, Trump may not be removed but previous situations have shown that the president's party gets hammered at the next election.

crazygranny Thu 19-Dec-19 11:55:54

Don't prejudge the outcome. There is much time to pass and information to be discovered.
The Bidens have already been investigated by the Ukraine government (well beforehand) and slurs against them found to be baseless.
Always remember that it wasn't until the last minute that Republicans turned against Nixon.
Let's hope that Trump's tax returns see the light of day soon and the full extent of his wrongdoing will be seen.
Watch Rachel Maddow online and get both an education in US politics and up to date informationwithout ranting or name calling.

Indeed SirChenjin, that is better.

DoraMarr Thu 19-Dec-19 11:34:35

I have read the evidence, and it is convincing. It has been interesting reading about his supporters, and how they are dismissing the facts- as are the Republicans, who have instead focussed on the process, rather than the crimes. I would like to have heard from John Bolton and Rudy Giuliani. However, I think the Democrats are now seen as the party of impeachment, and have a lot of work to do before next November to convince voters that their policies will be best for the US public. I’m finding it fascinating following the news, and reading Donald Trump’s tweets and transcripts of his speeches. Last night’s was weird- lightbulbs, dishwashers and toilets, and lots of lies about the economy. You have to wonder if it’s deliberate, or if he has some mental impairment.

SirChenjin Thu 19-Dec-19 11:26:00

How silly of me maddy, I should, of course, prefixed that with “having read the reports of the charges against him, in my opinion...” If the evidence proves otherwise then naturally I will change my view. That better?

Aepgirl Thu 19-Dec-19 11:24:41

The other 2 US Presidents who were impeached retained their posts, so no doubt Trump will as well.

Urmstongran Thu 19-Dec-19 11:18:58

Strange how some posters denigrate his appearance. It would cause outrage if female politicians were so targeted.

Anyway it doesn’t matter. It’s not a beauty contest.

maddyone Thu 19-Dec-19 11:12:35

‘He’s as guilty as hell....’

I hope you’re never on a jury SirChenjin, because you apparently make up your mind from what you read in newspapers or on the television. I thought due process meant we listen to the evidence, and not just the press/media.

I just wish he'd get a new make up artist that will spread his fake tan right up to his hairline, rather than leave it looking as if he has put his face through one of those seaside photo boards and then spray painted!

EXACTLY! And add some around his eyes! And buy a better fake bake that is actually brown, not orange. He looks like the happy slapping Tango bloke from the 80's advert.

Urmstongran Thu 19-Dec-19 10:59:41

Many Americans are calling it ‘impeachment lite’. He will be re-elected this time next year. The Democrats don’t have any outstanding candidates so they hoped impeachment might dent Trump’s popularity. It won’t.

sarahellenwhitney Thu 19-Dec-19 10:59:30

He is not the first U.S president to face impeachment but you may be sure he will as did another twentieth century U.S president when faced with impeachment 'walked out' ' as the saying goes 'smelling like a rose'.

Since Mitch McConnell, the Senate Majority leader and a Republican has vowed to ignore his oath to hear the impeachment proceedings impartially, and is refusing to discuss how an impeachment hearing might be conducted, Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic leader in Congress is holding back from passing on the impeachment to the Senate. This denies the Republicans the opportunity of dismissing it quickly and means that the ugly stain hanging over Donald Trump will continue indefinitely. The hope is that the Senate hearing can be delayed until the US Supreme Court rules that the White House must hand over documents and allow witnesses to be called.

NannyC2 Thu 19-Dec-19 10:33:33

I agree with Aprilrose.
How someone can say without a shadow of doubt that he is guilty without robust data is beyond me!
Remember....'judge not..........'

SirChenjin Thu 19-Dec-19 09:53:16

He’s guilty as hell - but he represents a certain type of American for whom the establishment (ie democracy and the rule book) is something to be challenged at every turn - if he can stick two fingers up at the rules and go on his merry way without consequence then so can they.

Davidhs Thu 19-Dec-19 09:49:23

Total waste of time and money every Republican delegate backs Trump, a 2/3 majority is not possible, much as I would like to see him damaged, he might come out stronger.

aprilrose Thu 19-Dec-19 09:44:36

Actually gagajo, again speaking to Americans who know their system better than I, they say he is not guilty of any impeachable offence according to their constitution.

I am inclined to believe them.

Personally I would say he probably isnt guilty but there are many including Hilary Clinton who are guilty of criminal acts. But thats my opinion. I am not going to defend it or argue it. We are all entitled to an opinion. You have yours. I have noted it.

Luckygirl Thu 19-Dec-19 09:32:37

A trail whose outcome is a foregone conclusion and politically decided - that is not a proper trial at all.

GagaJo Thu 19-Dec-19 09:31:16

aprilrose, whether it leads the republicans to another win or not, there is NO DOUBT that Trump is guilty.

Therefore, he should be tried. Is the system fixed? Yes. Doesn't alter his guilt.

Oldwoman70 Thu 19-Dec-19 09:27:33

Can't help thinking this is a waste of time. Vote to be impeached by the House of Representatives which is Democrat controlled. Will go on to face trail in the Senate - controlled by Republicans

aprilrose Thu 19-Dec-19 09:26:10

If you listen to the Americans rather than just the democrats, you will find that this means Trump will get re elected in 2020. They have virtually guarentted it.

The impeachment was rather like the HoC when they impeded the referendum voted and tied Boris Johnson until we had a GE.

In this case the impeachment by the democrats ( which is already being called a Kangaroo court and has led to investigations of their own candidate Biden which could prove a problem for them) will not be upheld by the Senate.

So dont blow your trumpets too soon.
