Very true, Urmstongran - tarmac and concrete - or anything else that forms a barrier between the water and the soil - really aggravates the problems.

Its even been raining here in Norfolk all day. Usually it manages to bypass us which is fortunate as quite a bit of Norfolk is pretty boggy anyway. Luckily I’m on one of the highest points in the county - 300 feet.

I’m sure I read once that all the tarmac we lay doesn’t help - car parks etc, plus decking in gardens.

We get the rain here first, SW Wales. Lots of small rivers and streams overflowing, but nothing terribly major. I feel so sorry for people like Kitty that have water in their homes. We have very sandy soil so most water drains quickly. However I think we have reached saturation point and large puddles are forming on lawns.
DD tells me they have forecast a very good summer. One can only hope

The train I'm on tomorrow goes through the Midlands, so I (selfishly) hope that the rain isn't coming further north. Although it was raining ceaselessly a week ago here in Cheshire, it's been fairly dry today but gloomy.

I’ve noticed how much the drains around here can’t cope. Councils rarely seem to dredge them and the kerbside and beyond have huge lakes now - very difficult for pedestrians if cars aren’t slowing down - I saw one poor man get soaked this afternoon by a car speeding past. It’s an offence but who would try & take a registration number if you’ve just been drenched?

We have had the recorded message and email from the Environment Agency to say there is now a flood alert for the brook going through our village. Houses not in danger, but fields and roads could be flooded.

Yes. sodden fields either side going through Somerset the other day, ruined crops.
Today coming home the river was well over the banks, the water reddish brown and muddy from everything that is coming downstream.
I was hoping that the tide wasn't coming in as I might have been marooned.

kitty sorry to hear that you have water coming in and that you can get dried out.

I guess that’s why it’s changed from global warming to climate change.

jura, I bet you didnt come through our village as, until very recently, we got marooned quite regularly!! Going by seems the best bet.

I went past your old house the other day via the back roads - the dips in the road were quite interesting.

Driving down to Surrey from East Leics on Monday - fortunately DDs new house is on top of a hill near absorbing heathland.

So much better than that awful heat though.

Half of my garden is under water (Surrey), I shall need to buy some wellies to get to the greenhouses tomorrow! I've got some fleece lined rubber boots, but the struggle to get them off (after a struggle to get them on) is almost frightening!

I guess though that snow is a thing of the past if the global warming lot are correct.

I'm tempted to say bring it on, as snow is so disruptive, but climate change will have to go a bit further before it changes our weather to the point where snow is a thing of the past.
At the moment, it is responsible for the extreme swings that we are experiencing in our weather, and snow is still very possible at one end of those extremes.

It feels like it's been raining almost non-stop here since early September, yet I'm reliably informed that the next county to the east (Cambridegshire) is still dreadfully short of water!

Webbed feet would be very useful to get across some of our local fields at the moment.

but so sorry to hear kitty. Reminds me of the days I had to drive to work and had to leave 2 hours early to try all the back roads until I could find one passable - often by your village.

Spent the afternoon with a French friend - so my brain got crossed wires too, kity. Yes, pieds palmés in French- palmate ;French or English - grrrrrr- want to go for nice walks along the canal or the park, but no!

Been going all day here too, no good waiting for it to stop as wouldn’t get anything done. Read on GN earlier that tomorrow is the shortest day, this always cheers me up to think that spring is on the way ( albeit slowly).

It's in our hall - again. I might put tinsel on the laths! I'd put fairy lights round it but the effort of switching them off and on and changing the batteries is just too much.
