Big Ben Can Bong For Brexit

I see in my Sunday paper that the new Speaker, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, has said he would allow Big Ben to ring out to mark Brexit on January 31st, ‘If MP’s wish to do that’.
How refreshing that this Speaker seems keen to do his job impartially, so unlike the bombastic Bercow, who did everything in his power to force his own views about Brexit at every turn.

I've come to feel Ok about Farage having his party even though it will be all jingoism and little englanders plus EDL types who have been in the pub beforehand and not the moderates. Anyone speaking with a foreign accent should keep away although I don't think it will be like Kristallnacht as some fear. There will be plenty of police overtime, plus most people wont be schlepping up to London to stand around on a cold January evening to hear a recording of Jerusalem and listen to Farage spouting.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if his 'party' turned out to be a damp squib, judging by his other attempts at 'popular' demonstrations. I wouldn't let it worry you, jura, there are worse things in prospect as Cummings moves to cement a tory dictatorship based on all that is most unpleasant in the national psyche.

And, with any luck it will p it down with rain on 31st Jan... ?

So Farage got permission for his big party in Parliament square. How inflammatory, jingoistic, divisive and more ...

Who is going to pay for the massive amount of Security required. And he is furious because he has not been allowed fireworks sad

And the next day, the expect the EU 26 to be all smiles and full of goodwill for us lovely Brits. Stupid, beyond stupid.

I'd be happier if the money was raised to help children in areas of deprivation. The Sunday Times ran a great campaign as their Christmas appeal, so instead of snide comments find out about where help is needed and do something positive about it.
I find the da da de da da tone of some of the posters quite ridiculous. Why are grandparents using the tone of the playground? Great model for your grandchildren.

Meghan is to blame for global warming and WW3 too.

maddyone Wed 15-Jan-20 00:06:16

Yes Jura, you’re right, as you will see I made a joke that she’d been mentioned up thread by another poster. She’s not relevant on this thread.

maddyone Wed 15-Jan-20 00:02:33

Growstuff, I read that Meghan has 4/5 million pounds of her own earned money. But Prince Charles pays for her clothes, maybe not anymore though grin

jura2 Tue 14-Jan-20 20:22:03

Totally irrelevant on this thread, for sure.

growstuff Tue 14-Jan-20 20:19:23

OK! My mistake! It's Harry who has that much. Maybe he's paid for some of his wife's clothes. Frankly, I don't care.

Oopsminty Tue 14-Jan-20 20:10:15

Before Harry she was worth approximately 4 million dollars

Let's not get carried away now

growstuff Tue 14-Jan-20 20:01:05

I think I read somewhere that Meghan has over $30 million dollars of her own money.

maddyone Tue 14-Jan-20 19:58:29

Urmstongran grin Meghan seems to get a mention on every thread grin

Actually I heard it was nearer one million that she spent on clothes, and the person who pays for Meghan, Kate, and presumably Camilla’s clothes is Prince Charles. And apparently she spent more than the others. No surprises there then.

Grandma70s Tue 14-Jan-20 19:43:01

I find it a really scary thought.

Urmstongran Tue 14-Jan-20 19:32:27

In a wide-ranging interview this morning on BBC Breakfast, Boris Johnson urged the public to “bung a bob for a Big Ben bong”, but the Government has played down expectations that it is masterminding a crowdfunder.

However, the Prime Minister’s spokesperson indicated that if the money was raised, officials would liaise with House of Commons authorities to ensure it was technically possible.

This has prompted a series of monied Brexiteers, such as Lord Ashcroft and Arron Banks, to pledge publicly to support the cause.

Will their generosity be enough? We should find out soon enough.

Urmstongran Tue 14-Jan-20 19:27:36

Well Meghan Markle spent that amount on clothes last year!
Choices.

Barmeyoldbat Tue 14-Jan-20 19:27:33

Well I won't be celebrating, can't see anything to celebrate, just something to mourn. Why are we celebrating people who have lost jobs or are going to lose them, why are we celebrating losing our trading partners, for what? and also why are we celebrating going backwards instead of forward. Lets see how all the leavers feel in 5 years time.

MawB Tue 14-Jan-20 19:21:56

£500k needed - is this a good use of that money ? hmm

Urmstongran Tue 14-Jan-20 19:16:04

The guy who owns Wetherspoons (Tim somebody) has donated £5k to kickstart the crowdfunding. Nick Ferrari from The Pledge has donated £1k.

Grandma70s - like this?

vegansrock Tue 14-Jan-20 17:52:50

Who is going to hear the bleeding bongs? I’ll be tucked up in bed and won’t be anywhere near Westminster.

Grandma70s Tue 14-Jan-20 17:46:41

If they really do this, which I can’t quite believe they will, it will sound like a death knell to many of us.

I’m ashamed, too, BlueBelle, but I don’t know anybody personally who thinks like this. All my friends and family, of whatever age, are Remainers and pro-European. Reading this thread seems surreal to me.

BlueBelle Tue 14-Jan-20 17:32:37

Such disrespect and such childishness is incomprehensible
I m so so ashamed of this country now I don’t even want to be associated with it I m mortally ashamed of the people who think this is a way to behave I really really am, hold your heads in shame

jura2 Tue 14-Jan-20 17:23:42

So should they, no?

And esay to say when it does not affect you and your family massively, perhaps?

CraftyGranny Tue 14-Jan-20 17:18:56

For goodness sake, the vote has been cast. just accept it and get on with your own lives. I have.

Dinahmo Tue 14-Jan-20 17:00:52

It will cost £500,00 to fix Big Ben in order to make it bong. BJ just ain't gonna get his money. Hoorah!!!!
